CES organizers considering an E3 replacement
Group looking for industry reaction to a potential "West Coast event in late spring 2007."
Before the first Electronic Entertainment Expo in 1995, the big show for gaming in the US was the Consumer Electronics Show, held twice a year and featuring the latest and greatest in everything from TVs to cell phones. But CES scaled back to a single show in Las Vegas each January, and the game publishers decided to congregate each May for E3, largely leaving the CES show behind.
But with E3 downsizing and pushed back to July, the producers of CES are looking at reclaiming a bit of ground in the gaming industry. The Consumer Electronics Association, which owns CES, has announced that it is "forming an advisory committee to solicit gaming industry feedback and explore the viability of a West Coast event in late spring 2007 focused on the gaming and entertainment marketplace."
One of the concerns brought up regarding the freshly scaled down, invite-only E3 is that it takes away a very large, very visible stage on which smaller developers and publishers can get their products noticed by the industry at large. CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro said he's witnessed a demand for that stage to be replaced.
"Since ESA decided to eliminate the E3 event in its known format, we have been deluged with inquiries on whether we could fill the tradeshow needs of smaller video entertainment companies," Shapiro said in a statement. He added, "The Consumer Electronics Association believes that tradeshows are the most viable means for reaching a market, as they serve smaller companies and entrepreneurs who need access to media, buyers, and investors."
The CEA has already announced the support of NCsoft, Majesco Entertainment, and Auravision in forming an advisory committee.
CES isn't the only convention looking to step into the void left by the retooled E3. The Austin Game Conference and Gen Con are both growing, with the latter even moving its So Cal Gen Con satellite convention into the Los Angeles Convention Center, longtime home of the E3 show.

E3 is gone from our sites and the eyes and ears of those who were lucky enough to travel to LA, tapdance through the excessive security (even with complete forms and ID) and battle crowds. Now is the time for an event focused the gaming industry and all it encompasses - from developers to the gamers themselves. Now is the time for a consumer-accessible venue where companies regardless of size and budget can get noticed by everyone.
Now is the time for America's Video Game Expo.

I've been to E3 and I must say that while it did get too crowded at times, and having a bit of a circus-like atmosphere, it really showcased the best that the industry has to offer and its grandeur probably rivaled the Academy Award in its heyday. I wasn't happy that E3 decided to scale it down to an invitation-only event, and hosted it in smaller venues without the same excitement it has before. If other competitors like CES would like to fill in the void left by the old E3, I'm all for it; I think the consumers deserve a video game convention equivalent of the Comic Con.

The only complaints I had with E3 were the half-naked booth babes standing around looking pretty, promoting the latest video card or a console game, which is not needed. And also over the past 5 or so years, E3 has been a circus. Preventing the media from conducting good interviews to the developers and/or publishers on what they are doing within the industry, due to loud music and what not in the convention itself. I feel that we as gamers could of had better information on most of these games out there if the convention wasn't much of a concert.
Yes I like the insane(ness) of the convention, but there needs to be a time that we need to put video games back into focus again and not focus on the party like atmosphere.

CEA should make it focus on the gamers, the public , like Comic-Con San Diego does with comics-and the public.

I don't like the idea that they are looking for a "E3 replacement". The ESA has already gone a different direction more developer and partner focus which is fine with me.
This is a good oportunity for CES to make it a successor to E3 that caters only to consumers. Since it would be a first time for this they can do pretty much whatever they want.
I personally don't see a significance to E3 for consumers at all. This is largly because the next gen consoles ps3, 360 as well as the Wii and PC already have the ability to do demos via online download. I believe demos would impact consumers more than any video montage out there. And now that you can do it at home at your leisure you can get a better experience accross the board.
E3 = Money, unfortunately that is the real reason why anyone would pick this up. What I want to know is what can CES do that online content can't do? I admit I have never been to an E3 event and now never will, but because I research the games I buy online using websites like gamespot I really don't see a need to spend lots of time in line to play a game for a few minutes. I imagine there is a E3 experience that you can only feel if you have been there, but is that enough to make you want to go back if you can get everything else online? I guess that is the real question that needs to be addressed.

I never saw the downsizing of E3 as a bad thing. For all companies large and small it will mean a significant savings, not only in money, but time it takes to put together their presentations. Since I'm one of those people who depends on gaming magazines and sites like this for my gaming information, as long as the media has access to E3, I don't care how or where it takes place. As for a lot of companies jumping on the CES bandwagon, I don't see that happening, unless E3 was completely abandoned instead of just downsized.

I think the IGDA should file a class-action suit against the ESA. They've sold out to Electronic Arts at the cost of the customers.

I don't think anything will feel like the old E3. I doubt that even if the CES tries to imitate the old atmosphere of the old E3, it just won't be the same.

Bring it on, E3 stole your thunder CES, now it's time for you to steal it back.
Get ready for some competition E3 and you brought this on yourself by not having the balls to stand up the big game companies and keep E3 like it was.

I am so sick of the idea that the smaller guys are going to get crowded out. If anyone bothered to read the interview over at IGN with the president of E3 (or whatever its called) - it was clear the changes had to do with who was invited (because lets face it, there were lots of people at E3 that didn’t need to be there) and how people set up booth (lets face it, MS and Sony and Nintendo didn’t need 30,000 SQ FT booths to get their points across). It will in no way crowd out the smaller guys or limit who can setup a booth. The big boys will just have less exotic booths since they are going to be strict about booth size and what not. If anything isn’t that better for the little guy? If there is less of a difference between the little guys booth and MS's (or Sony or Ninty or EA or whoever), then that works to their advantage (the little guys) and saves the large boys money. Seems more win-win that “waa, waaaaa”
In the end I feel that most people are going to be surprised that the new E3 isn’t as drastically different as it was before, it just won’t be the chaotic circus it has been. Companies big and small, are still all going to show up, and there is going to be plenty of news – if anything, according to that interview I mentioned, the show will be more focused on press then previously.
So lets all stop the "oh woe to the smaller company’s" lines - because the fear has yet to have any basis. But I guess you can’t find it too surprising the CES and the others are playing this card - after all, the more company’s that show up and the more people that attend, the more money they make. They don’t care about the little guy, they care about money. And they think they can make more money if they cast E3 in a negative light and make them selves seem more special.

I knew that other companies would step in and take over. E3 will remain THE event in the industry but, there will be other shows that will try to take over with the same stuff E3 has been known for.

This is sooo ironic - I remember when E3 was made so companies would have an option to CES (wow - I remember getting a video from Die Hard Gamer's that covered an old CES! 91 or 92?).
Cool.

Yes, great news. Gives me something to look forward to attending one day with my son and daughter, and of course give the gamers somewhere to feel like part of the trend. A big thank you to all these people who might make it possible one day.

CES is the natural successor, they have done a low key excellent consumer show for years.
CES is exactly what E3 is, a show for the industry and the media. This is exactly the void E3 left open.
As for PAX and others those have always been interesting, however they are NOT replacements for E3. They are similar to TGS, but their aim is fans, not people who's work it is.
I'm very hopeful CES takes this on, while they weren't the best show ever, they have been that industry's "standard" since Comdex's fall and they make good announcement, I just hope the "whores" of E3 don't come out. (Anyone with a booth that costs more than a single game could.)

So, does this mean Gamespot isn't going to be able to to do their massive coverage next year? Will you get to interview Myamato or katarugi if you wanted to/ (My spelling sucks.)

I just hope the market doesn't get flooded with too many game shows. That will end up spreading developer participation thin, thus taking away the granduer of a supremely focused convention like E3.
Which would be worse? Running around Los Angeles to find information on a mass amount of games in one structured conference (supposedly the next E3), or running around to different conferences each month to review a few developers here and there?
Why doesn't the people behind the game conventions include the opinions of the media, such as Gamespot or IGN? I bet sites such as these would have something to say about how the game advertising industry should work to make game information not only easily accessible, but flourish in efficiency.
