Sony closer to Worlds Apart

Sony acquires online card-game maker, creates SOE-Denver, launches online card organization and tourney site.

Sony Computer Entertainment today announced it has bought "key assets" of Worlds Apart Productions and is forming a new studio, Sony Online Entertainment-Denver, made up of former Worlds Apart employees. Worlds Apart has produced card games based on game, movie, and TV franchises--such as Auto Assault, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Trek--plus its own online multiplayer strategy series, Star Chamber.

Sony also announced today the launch of a Web site, called Gamers Round Table, where players of collectible card games can organize matches on the Internet. GRT Tourney Organizer, the site's downloadable program, can register and track players, create events, and run tournaments, as well as keep tabs on "bookkeeping" tasks--points, tiebreakers, and pairings. Bandai, JoyRide Entertainment, and Sabertooth Games have signed on to work with Gamers Round Table.

    Ps3 still sucks...

Something you both have in common highpunchryu. I love how just one little piece of news like this for Sony comes out and all the haters come outta the wood works. Comment on the article not about how much it's gonna fail. Dang can you guys give me the winning lottery numbers? Cuz you guys seem to know exactly who's gonna win and who isn't.

Blow all of Eastern Asia and you blow away millions of dollars worth of Sony's investments, not to mention a few manufacturing plants. Oh almost forgot... Bill Gates alone can purchase Sony's computer entertainment division.

this may be tied to the new eyetoy capabilities, with the card recognition stuff. whats that game called... i forget.
maybe they are trying to get into a huge market of card players, and move them online ... through the PS3.

That's where you're wrong deadlocked. Sony is at the top of the food chain, but blow away half of Eastern Asia and at least one of it's "economical eyes" would be doing a hell of a lot more than batting.

With people willing to pay over 100bucks for a Pokemon card and Konami milking lots of money on YuGiOh, Sony would be stupid not to take advantage of all these sucker drooling card players. So Sony aint intrested in opinions if their plan is good or not, they just want a peace of that card playing cash cow.

What's with all the hostility toward CCGs? Haven't you people ever heard of hobbies? Christ, so many ignorant, spoiled babies on this site. Anyone on this site that plays video games (which would be everyone) is in no position to make fun of people who play CCGs, or any other similar hobby. If you don't understand why, then you're not using your brain.

"So long to Sony" Drudaddy? You obviously have no idea just how much money Sony has. You could blow away all of Eastern Asia and Sony wouldn't bat an economic eye. Welcome to a world of monopolies, and Sony is definitely near the top of the food chain. It's a sad truth.

Oh, and yes, there are still a lot of people playing CCGs out there, its a hobby just like anything else, the definition of a fad is something that comes and goes, so CCGs are most definatly not a 'fad' the whole pokemon/ect crazes were fads, but CCGs in general have been around long before they were ever made well known by certain fads/crazes.

You only need to look at the VS series 1 million dollar world championship, or the numerous MTG grand prixs and other tourney with cash prizes to realise this.

    All the morons out there.

A lot of people who play Magic are actually quite intelligent, and have decent jobs and make a good living, if you wanna call them nerd, thats all well and good because they call you lesse beings.

My main point though, nobody cares about magic in regards to this, as Wizards already have a magic online system whereby you can purchase cards online and play over the internet.

Whoever mentioned yugioh, they have a similar system too, for over 2 years now so its nothing new.

And even before that there were programs like apprentice with lists of cards and stuff that could be used to play games over the net with freinds.

"Yea.......oh course most "nerd" that actully leave the house (the ones that are not getting fat on MMO's, lol) a lot of them still play that @$^$ "Magic" card game so if they were to "fuse" this whole card online thing with Magic, they would get a good amout of money.......bloody Magic."

...If Magic and a MMO were to fuse we'd have fat magic nerds that don't leave the house!

lol, well i cant say im a fan of card games, after going crazy on pokemon and spending over 300 dollars on cards i figured out that they're completly worthless, no matter how many people say "oh you can sell a mint-conditon charizard for 150 bucks and they're like art, their price only goes up with age" yeah, still got em, still little pieces of paper.

but thats my rant for the day, don't like it? stuff it. I dont wanna hear it

What is with the cards? Japan may be 10 years ahead of the US in technology, but they're DEFINITELY 10 years behind in fads.

After Pokemon, everyone and anyone thought they could make a campy little card game/card game based anime. They should let the idea die.
