New Genesis for PSP, PS2

Classic titles from Sega's 16-bit system headed to Sony platforms in one collection; Golden Axe, Sonic, Shinobi III among 30-plus games.

One of the biggest announcements at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Jose was the revelation that Nintendo's Wii (then code-named Revolution) would feature downloadable games from the library of the Sega Genesis.

The reception the announcement got is a clear example of the popularity of retro gaming and the Sega Genesis in particular. Now it appears that gamers won't have to buy a Wii just to play Genesis games.

Sega today announced that Sega Genesis Collection, a compilation of more than 30 Genesis titles, is being released this fall for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. Sega did not differentiate between the two versions but did confirm that the PSP version would take advantage of the handheld's capabilities.

A full list of the games in the compilation hasn't yet been released, but Sega did reveal that Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi III, Altered Beast, and a Phantasy Star game (likely Phantasy Star II) would be included. The collection will also feature unlockables, such as interviews with the developers of the original titles, game hints, and some Sega arcade games from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

With releases like this, they may find a way to stop homebrew users ... from using homebrew. At least the ones that use it for old school emulators.

These are some of the best games on the Genesis. They need to include Streets of Rage 2. that was my favorite.

Hopefully the Phantasy Star game will be PSIV. I've always liked that one the most, and have wanted a remake of that ever since I lost / had stolen my original.

i hope all the games are in the original form and play Exactly the same. i remember i was so hyped about midway arcade treasures 2 for mortal kombat II...yea they def chanced the gameplay mechanics a little bit in timing with the tool they used to port it. it literally ruined the game for me.

i loved my genesis when i owned up, ended up selling it tho and regreting it ever since. so this is great news for me . hopefully all the rest of the games included will be killer apps of the genesis and play exactly the same.

i really hope maxium carnage is included in the game...altho i doubt it will be

They need Wonder Boy III. But I think thats on Master System. That was the best thing ever on a Sega-only system.

I read the 1up article, and I find it great news that Backbone Entertainment (which Digital Eclipse Software is part of) is handling the porting process.

The selection is great, but some series (noteably Shining Force and Streets of Rage) were absent. Here's hoping there'll be a 2nd volume so Sega won't have an excuse to pass those up.

Of course, we'll only see a volume 2 if demand on the origional is high enough, so please vote with your pocketbooks on the origional and let Sega know what you'd like to see in a future collection.

On a side note, notice that the Sega SmashPack for the Dreamcast had "Volume 1" on the packaging and title screen. This implicates (at least to me) that there would've been more for the DC had Sega not abruptly decided to exit the hardware market.

Sweet! This would be on my next "to get" list, along with Taito Legends 2, & Capcom Classics Collection, Volume 2! But they are kind of missing a few more key games on there. Where's Sonic 3? Sonic & Knuckles? Revenge Of Shinobi? Streets Of Rage 1-3? Shining Force 1 & 2, etc.?

Oh, well. Here's hoping for a second volume of this & to include those games.

Please don't throw in a bunch of crappy games like Capcom Collection Classic Remix for the PSP, seriously I wasted time and money on that title and had to sell it back so I can get a good game like Tekken. I mean, CCCR had like five good games and the rest were just redundant and they sucked. Please put more good games, at least decent games.

"Why the HECK can't SEGA get it through their heads to port Phantasy Star FOUR? It's EASILY the best in the series.... 1, 2, and 3 were ported to the GBA and, in a brutal irony, the fourth wasn't. Sega, please. "

I feel the exact same way about Dragon Warrior 4 from the NES days.

"Unfortunately, Streets of Rage ain't in there!"

If you read the article, it clearly states that the "full list of the games in the compilation hasn't yet been released." You can ask Sega to include the game and/or be patient.

As for me, I like Phantasy Star II but would also like to see Phantasy Star IV, which I don't remember seeing since the Genesis/Mega Drive release.

I never owned a Genesis so it's awesome that there will be so many ways to get my hands on some of these classic games. I don't know if I will get this, since my PS2 is on the fritz right now, but I'll get to play them somehow either through this or the Wii.

This isnt to big a deal. i have every game for every retro system including the arcades. emulation is great. pc gaming is great if you know where to get the goods. console fans should look into pc gaming if they want a real value on old games.and even new ones. just my opinion.

Finally a good selection of games that are worth something that is being offered onto one disc instead of going through XBL Arcade. I'm curious on how much they'll charge. Probably the normal price of $20. Let's hope so.

    @VegetaMaelstrom
Cherry picking - sometimes its a better deal, sometimes its not. At $5 a pop, I would've been better off cherry picking the one or two games I liked off those Midway collections as opposed to buying the collection for $20. If you want 4 games, you break even. If you want more, buying a collection is better (if its available).

The one perk a collection has, though, is portability - the disc can travel much easier than the system ^_^

    mike_mgoblue stated:
"I will probably get these on Xbox Live Arcade when they are released. That way, they can be seen in high-definition with and heard with 5.1 sound. Plus, it is nice to be able to have all of these games available on the hard drive to play whenever you want, even if there is another game in the system."

I hate to break it to ya kid but even if you cherry pick your 10 favorites from freshmetal80's sweet list you might have to pay around $5 per game if even older offerings such as Pac-Man are being sold for that on Live Arcade. That adds up to $50 and I highly doubt that Sega will charge that much for this compilation (my guess and hope is $20).

superkoolstud, I think Strider is coming out in November as part of the Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 for PS2 and Xbox and Strider is my favorite game of that sweet compilation.

Two great collections from legendary software developers. Now all I need is a Konami Klassic Kollection with some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Castlevania, and Metal Gear, etc. games. Konami could put quite a few kick butt games on one DVD and lets face it, every company from Capcom to Taito has been flooding the market with these offerings so they must be profitable.

This holiday sure is shaping up to be the best in years for this oldtimer.

Its good that Sega is releasing their old hits what stinks is most of the people that own psp have problems with the resessed d pad. Also most of the people own the best of the best genesis games. What I'm trying to say is that why should anyone pay for a game that they already have when if you look around the internet long enough you can find a way to play your favorite retro games for free legally (if already own the original cart that is) on your psp. Please remember don't rip off the game companies that helped shape the present lengendary titles that are to come in the next generation. LONG LIVE THE CLASSICS

I wonder if the big "N" is offended in any kinda way over this considering that they are releasing genesis and turbo graphx 16 games on thier upcoming virtual console. Seems like a middle finger IMO but even then it might be a good way to let gamers feel that nostalgia and want a Wii for more games of the pre-PSX era.
