New Genesis for PSP, PS2
Classic titles from Sega's 16-bit system headed to Sony platforms in one collection; Golden Axe, Sonic, Shinobi III among 30-plus games.
One of the biggest announcements at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Jose was the revelation that Nintendo's Wii (then code-named Revolution) would feature downloadable games from the library of the Sega Genesis.
The reception the announcement got is a clear example of the popularity of retro gaming and the Sega Genesis in particular. Now it appears that gamers won't have to buy a Wii just to play Genesis games.
Sega today announced that Sega Genesis Collection, a compilation of more than 30 Genesis titles, is being released this fall for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. Sega did not differentiate between the two versions but did confirm that the PSP version would take advantage of the handheld's capabilities.
A full list of the games in the compilation hasn't yet been released, but Sega did reveal that Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi III, Altered Beast, and a Phantasy Star game (likely Phantasy Star II) would be included. The collection will also feature unlockables, such as interviews with the developers of the original titles, game hints, and some Sega arcade games from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
