US console charts: July 30-August 5

Nintendo's DS rules the top 10 again as gamers gear up for Madden's release; a few 360 titles sneak back on the list.

Given their domination of the sales charts over the last few months, it would seem that everyone already has a copy of New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day for the Nintendo DS. But apparently that's very far from the truth. The two games, which were released in May and April, respectively, owned the top two spots on Best Buy's console game sales charts once again during the week of July 30 to August 5.

Their stay at the top is no doubt temporary, as Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 07 game is scheduled for release on August 22. But until then, Mario and Brain Age's closest competition is Madden's cousin, NCAA Football 07, which landed in third (Xbox 360), fourth (PlayStation 2), and 11th (PlayStation Portable).

A few other DS games also cracked the top 10, including another Mario vehicle (pun intended), Mario Kart DS, in the fifth spot and Trauma Center: Under the Knife in sixth. Bargain shoppers gobbled up the $14.99 Sprint Cars: Road to Knoxville for the PS2, and the PSP game Tekken: Dark Resurrection fell three spots to number eight.

Rounding out the top 10, the Xbox 360 showed it still has some punch with Fight Night Round 3 swinging away in ninth and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter shooting into 10th.

I am glad to see DS is up on top but it's a bitter sweet feeling because they won't be up there again until MAYBE the release of StarFox or Final Fanstay

Oh, and to the guy who said that he didn't believe the Best Buy site because it said Nintendogs had already outsold the Legend of Zelda on the NES, that's actually true. Not only that, it's sold more than any Zelda game ever, actually. It even passed Ocarina. Nintendogs is closing in on 8 million right now. Within a week or two it will pass Halo 2, leaving only five games in this entire generation ahead of it, all for the PS2 (FFX, GT4, GTA3, GTAVC, and GTASA). Nintendogs is selling like MAD.

What's Trauma Center doing in there? It wasn't even a hot enough seller to be on any top 10 list at the time of its release, let alone a 10 months after its release. That's pretty sweet.

Can they not get a unified sales chart? I don't like Best Buy they tore down my hometown theatre that was only built in 86 and had a huge screen.

It would be nice to see what games are selling best in an actual game store. Sure, Best Buy is a fine place to get info from, but Gamestop or EB Games would be better for games. Then again, it's altogether possible people buy more games from the big name stores than from stores that specialize only in games. There are, after all, two basic kinds of game buyers, the casual and the hardcore. The hardcore (reserving the latest new stuff, etc.) generally go to places like Gamestop whereas the casual (the parents buying birthday/Christmas presents, etc.) go to whatever big store near them sells games, K-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, etc.

This is just me speculating. I wouldn't mind seeing multiple sale charts, or at least a side-by-side comparison between Best Buy and Gamestop sales.

Wow, there seems to be a lot of people making fun of the PSP. I wonder why that is. On both US (Best Buy) and Japanese charts there is at least one PSP game on the list. How many GameCube and original XBox games are on those lists...ZERO!

Well considering Gamecube and Xbox are considered "old" now, and that the PSP is "new" and supposed to be a state of the art handheld, I think people have the right to poke a little bit of fun at the system. And as for you complaining about this being only a bestbuy chart, very true but much like a survey, you can't always poll everything. If you take a reasonable sample, it usually indicates the general trend. Not always, but it I think for the most part, it gives you a good indication of where things stand. I've seen many parents shopping in specialty game stores when the price was actually lower at best buy .

Hey Gamespot. Why the Shameless plug for Madden in this article? I'm pretty sure the game will do just fine when it comes out without your EA buttkissing. They basically (and what I would consider unethically) removed all competition from their path.

This article is a sales chart. Not a prediction of the coming week sales.

I don't get why people will buy madden games year after even though there isn't much added content, its just updated. Its like the way people buy 17 different pokemon games just so they can have every color in the rainbow.

  • megasnake

    Posted Aug 10, 2006 10:18 am PT

i guess bestbuy has the most parents shopping for games and real gamers going elsewhere like they should, combine it with all the other stores that sell games and results will be different, seeing graw and fight night outsell chromehounds, prey, hitman and LOTR for xbox360 in the last week is already enough proof of that.

This website doesn't seem to accurate. First of all, it doesn't say when it was updated. Second of all... it says that Nintendogs has already outsold "The Legend of Zelda" for NES. I'm just going to have to call that crap.

    "Dekuxutu
Mario still is on top? Anyone else want to bet that NSMB will become the best selling game for the DS by the time it's life ends?"

That seems logical, but it also has some real stiff competition. Nintendogs is currently the best selling DS game world wide. It's already sold more than Halo, and is sneaking up on Halo 2.

NSMB is no slouch, having sold nearly 5 million copies since it's release, but there are several other games on the DS that sold as much or better.

  • mr_squibble

    Posted Aug 10, 2006 7:04 am PT

There are not as many XBOX 360 games competing for sales as there are PS2 games. Those 100 million PS2 owners have WAY more games from which to pick than the 5 million XBOX 360 owners do, meaning it can be more difficult for a PS2 game to dominate the chart. But that will change when Madden 2007 releases, so maybe I know nothing...

I wonder when gamespot will post the recent two Nintendo press releases about the success of Brain Age and the DS lite in America and Europe.

Seems the psp is only getting the sony shipped figures of the psp by giving it away when you get a new cell phone or buy the bundles with five games or buy it when they have sale each week where the PSP only costs more then nine dollars then the DS lite without any games.

Wouldn't sales data be more accurate if it didn't just come from one store?!?
When they report box office figurers for movies they don't just count sales from AMC theaters.

Or if they are only going to report sales from one store, why not make it a GAME store like EB / Gamestop?

Actaully, Diablobasher, That game would be in the top 10 in any store. thats a pretty accurate list of america i would say.

thank goodness for madden. it might just make x360 look good for a few weeks. it's sad to see that it is playing catch up to 2nd gen systems when it should be dominating the charts - not just here in the US but also in other countries. it is so saddening that it can't even get in the top ten of international charts. hope it can keep it's head above water once the better 3rd gen systems arrive this fall.

Why dont you get sales information from game stores, isnt bestbuy a general store? like woolworths in the uk. Their charts are bound to be crap, i mean, everybody knows super mario bros, so of course its gonna be near the top.

But seriously, on any serious chart, NCAwtf would be nowhere near the top, not even on the damn chart to be honest.

Go get some real info please gamespot.
