Sierra Combats F.E.A.R.

Multiplayer portion of well-reviewed PC shooter to be made free for download in mid-August; Combat includes latest updates, maps, multiplayer game modes.

Sierra Entertainment, a subsidiary of Vivendi Games, today announced that it is releasing the multiplayer portion of its hit PC horror shooter F.E.A.R. over the Internet for free. The download, dubbed F.E.A.R. Combat, will be available on August 17 and requires gamers to register for a keycode, which can be obtained at the game's official Web site.

Those who download the game will be able to participate in multiplayer frag sessions against other F.E.A.R. Combat owners, as well as those who own the full retail version of the game. Combat will include all the latest updates, 10 game modes, 19 maps, 12 weapons, anticheating-software support, and the ability to download user-created content.

A rep for Sierra said F.E.A.R. Combat was a way to give gamers who might not have played F.E.A.R., which was named GameSpot's Best Shooter for 2005 and GameSpot readers' choice Best PC Game of 2005, a chance to see why it was so well-received. "We had a good multiplayer component and we spent the last eight months building it up, but most people know F.E.A.R. as a single-player game. There's a hardcore group of F.E.A.R. multiplayer fans, and we'd like to expose the multiplayer component to the widest possible audience as possible."

F.E.A.R. was released for the PC in October 2005 and was developed by Monolith Productions (Condemned: Criminal Origins for the Xbox 360). An Xbox 360 version is currently being developed by Day 1 Studios (MechAssault) and will be released in November. For more information on F.E.A.R., check out GameSpot's review.

I'm very glad they did this. F.E.A.R is one of the greatest shooters ever made and now more people will get to see why its so damn good. I've had this game since release and i loved the multi play but due to lack of players it suffered alot. But now its awesome to play online. I have more fun playing this than cod2 now. fear rules.

If it ships more units of F.E.A.R Sierra will be chuffed.

If it causes a mass influx of people to play F.E.A.R multiplayer for longer than a few hours, i'll be mightily shocked.

Nice free package there Sierra/VU. And a fine way to bring the FEAR name back into the cultural spotlight before the 360 version ships. Every 360 owner should get this game for its super-slick campaign.

Well apparently the only catch is having to register on their website. Other than that it looks super easy. They just want to show off their work and maybe get a few more people to buy the game. Great idea.

    Posted Aug 8, 2006 6:03 pm GMT

Let's see... will there be advertisements? Some sort of play-prevention thing making it liks a trial? Surely there has got to be a catch somewhere. But I got the retail version anyway.

Great, even though i own F.E.A.R already, why not have Sierra give away the best part, multiplayer(Single Player is great too!) and for free, and still no new weapons, still, and now a bunch of n00bs will be all over the servers, and will try hosting, and will get bad ping, woohoo!
