Shippin' Out 8/7-11: Dead Rising, Pac-Man

Summer remains light on new releases; zombies, Pac-Man attack the 360 and the pint-size GBA grows up with Super Robot Taisen.

Despite the hot-weather stereotype of summer's bone-dry release schedule, recent weeks have seen big-name releases such as Human Head Studio's portal-walking Prey, the latest entry in EA's NCAA football series, Namco Bandai's PlayStation Portable brawler Tekken: Dark Resurrection, and Capcom's long-awaited Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting, to name a few.

Next week, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, Ninety-Nine Nights, and DarkStar One headline a well-stocked week of new games. Until then, however--just hope that your zombie bashing in the Willamette Parkview Mall lasts a long, long time.

Dead Rising, the frenetic, action-infused zombie game from the horror aficionados at Capcom, rises above the pack as this week's most high-profile new game. In Dead Rising, you are Frank West, a brawny photojournalist trapped in a small-town Colorado mall, where zombies roam like buffalo. West will have to pilfer dozens of the mall's stores for weapons, solve cases, and snap photos, all while traversing the zombie playground. After last week's anticipated release of Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting on Xbox Live Arcade--which, according to Capcom's boasting, raked in serious cash as the Arcade's fastest-selling title yet--Pac-Man has a hard act to follow this week. Namco Bandai's classic ghost chomper hits Microsoft's online-game marketplace Wednesday for about $5.

Meanwhile, a big dose of giant-robot strategy gaming is stomping onto the small screen on Wednesday. Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation for the Game Boy Advance is a mashing of popular Japanese anime series--Gundam, Macross, Mazinger Z, and the like--into a turn-based strategy game with role-playing elements. Super Robot Taisen has already earned favorable reviews for its memorable characters, impressive graphics, and reply value.

D1 Grand Prix is a smaller profile but anticipated PlayStation 2 game from Yuke's. Based on the popular Japanese sport of drift racing, D1 Grand Prix pits racers against one another to not only cross the finish line first but in the most stylish manner.     I want both N3 and Dead Rising but I'm only going to buy one for now. Decisions decisions. I enjoyed both demos. Pacman should be fun but I'm only going to download the demo.

    the xbl demo was a blast to play even tho it was way too short, im going to trust capcom on this one with a new take on the whole zombie thing hopefully they will put enough content in this one to keep people playing it for longer that a week or two, it seriously needs online something, co-op vs. whatever, anything ,but i havent seen anything saying there is no online content but its a japanese dev so im just assuming theres no online.
    As a side note 360 owners seen to have plenty of money since almost every game relesed so far has sold out the first week at my local eb.

    Chubburns- Why are you concerned about what others say or play? Are doing a survey? Since we are ALL individuals and have own personal taste in games it's virtually impossible to understand EVERYONE's reasoning on why they like or dislike any game. Just be content with what you like to play. And if nothing on X360 interests you or is now boring you just be patient PS3 and Wii will be coming out shortly. Maybe then you'll have more satifaction in the variety of games that will be out. But your constant negativity towards people who love X360 games is suspicious and you look less a gamer and more a fanboy. I love my X360 but I don't like every title on it either. Regardless, I don't make derogatory remarks about Sony or Nintendo or their fans. Even if I disagree, they're entitled to favor any system they want without being ridiculed for it. I suggest you try that approach you'll gain more respect or even a friend by finding a "common ground" instead of being argumentive.

    for those of you who 'dont know' about how good Dead Rising might be....

    ....might I suggest downloading the demo on Live? I mean, that's what it's there for...and it's 100% cheaper than renting.

    On another note, Pac-Man will be mine, just out of respect for the franchise....and as for N3...eh, the demo was cool, but I'm still disappointed about no multiplayer. For a game that seeks to out-do the Dynasty Warriors franchise, they missed that mark BIG time...multiplayer is the only reason I play DW, really.

    Lemmings are really defensive on Dead Rising. They assume everyone who dislike Dead Rising is a Cow, that's just pathetic. I know cows who like God of War and hate MGS and vice versa.

    Read the review of Dead Rising. It looks pretty cool. I'm a little dissapointed but heh, what you gonna do. It still got a "great," so I might get it. Or at least rent it.

    I could care less about Dead Rising. I just want to rent it. Ninety Nine Nights will and should be awesome. I played a demo on the streets in Japan and it was fun as hell.

    Anyways, I hope Dead Rising will be cool at least until Gears of War or FEAR comes out or Lumines Live. Not bad for the summer.

    I can't wait to see how Pac Man play out on the 360.There has been a lot of different Pac man games that came out after it came out on the Arcades and those have not been good.But seeing as the 360 has analog sticks it should work out great.

    So I can't wait to see the change from Arcades to the 360 console.

    Another person who needs to do his research on me. I like how my opinion causes you to froth at the mouth and attack me . I have no interest in a game thats pretty much State of Emergency with Zombies. Watching some of the user uploads of people playing the demo bored the hell out of me. The 360 does have great games, but not every single one is a gem or is going to be. Fanboyism may be blinding you from the truth. I'm gonna say it again like I've said plenty of times before apparently owning an xbox with 50+ games still makes me a Sony fanboy.

    I could care less what console gets what games as long as their good..and if people want to hype a game let them.....I'm sure you haven't hyped a game or anything....but just because your preferred system comes out one year later doesn't give you the right to troll ok youre trolling is gettin really old....

    Well Im not a 360 owner but have some "OMG this is the best game ever"feel. Dead Rising IS the best 360 game so far OR at least the most refreshing and innovative one, good old arcade shooting meets resident evil. Dead Rising is SUPERB!!!

    For the guy who said it will only be fun for thirty minutes, I've played the fifteen minute demo and enjoyed it with friends for over an hour. And that was just us killing zombies.

    I played the Dead Rising demo. I hate games with zombies, but I thought Dead Rising was great. It is a sleeper hit.

    The Xbox360 games are new generation, and are actually AMAZING. Though it only seems like it's "Every game" because 3rd party developers are still working on current gen, in a year or two, don't worry, the mediocre games that make us cry and cringe will be back.

    Is it me or does every game that comes out for the 360 seem to be "OMG this is gonna be the best game ever" in the eyes of 360 owners?

    That's as dumb as me saying every PSP or DS game is gonna be the best just because it's released on those system. Not every game on a system is always gonna be great. This could flop you know. Dead Rising = Stubbs the Zombie, fun for the first 30 minutes, repetitive and boring after that.
