Capcom: SF2 fastest-selling XBLA game

Publisher says that one-on-one fighting game has seen "phenomenal record of downloads" since launching on Wednesday.

It was shortly after 1 a.m. PST on Wednesday morning that a chorus of "Round One...Fight!"s erupted across Xbox Live. After a few bumps in the road, Capcom's classic arcade game made it to Xbox 360s, and gamers were apparently ready for some online brawling.

Capcom today announced that Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting has become the fastest-selling Xbox Live Arcade title to date. The publisher claims that the highly anticipated game became the fastest-selling XBLA game in its first 24 hours, "with hundreds of matches being played every hour."

Hyper Fighting is an Xbox 360 port of the wildly popular classic arcade fighter that sucked quarters back in the early 1990s. The Xbox 360 version is now available for download for 800 Marketplace points ($10), and features the single-player game as well as online head-to-head matches.

Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting is rated T for Teen. For more information on the game, read GameSpot's review.

yes, this game cheap shots you to death. Welcome to the arcade fighters of the early to mid 90s. I know very well that I got cheapshotted just as much in the arcade as I do in this port, so anybody saying that this is cheaper...didn't play the arcade version. The SNES version was much easier. The arcade version beat the monkey hell out of you and sucked you dry of quarters.

Welcome to old-school, my friend. If you dislike cheapness, just be glad it's not an SNK game. SNK bosses are notoriously cheap "

Completely TRUE! New-school gamers don't have the skills to actually compete in these types of games. All they know from fighting games now-a-days, is that 'counter' equals 'a simple motion that can negate an enemy's attack and cause around 40% damage to the enemy'. Or that combos have to be announced/displayed to be legit.

I'm very sorry to see those of you who hate on this game. You'll never understand what makes it great, because you'll never open your eyes. All you see is low graphics and lack of animation frames. You hear lack of sound quality. You feel that there's a lack of control. All the while, a great game sits there, staring you in the face -- it takes more skill to compete in SF2HF than it does in DOA4, hands down. Want proof? Check out Evolution -- the fighting game tournament for the world, which has been going on for years. Check and see that old school SFs are in there, and host the biggest challengers each time (right along with MvC2).

So there ya go -- reason enough that it's the most downloaded game...because it rocks. It's cheaper than the only fighting game on the 360 right now, and it's better.

To those of you who have it and understand where I'm coming from, I'll see you online.

I don't know what gamespot was talking about this is a good port.(When compared to the arcade version its 98% accurate.) All the animation is there and the sounds are all there and the game is not too fast, its great I give an 9.

And to those of you that are like 15 and weren't even born when the game cameout in arcades shut up! You don't understand SF2 so keep your young mouths shut, and learn something about true gamming at its golden age.

Games look better now a days but they don't hold a punch to games like these when the developers actually cared about making games "more" than making money.

Hhhmm why did they "snub" Japan? Probably because Japan has snubbed the XBOX and 360. Course it would have helped them in the market but as lukewarm as the response is in Japan to the system they probably decided not to do it in addition tto hat there are hordes of old school Street Fighter purists that would have picked this version apart. I got it and they should have done more with it like making it closer to the Anniversary Collection version. What they need to do is put Third Strike on the compatability list.

Well, I got it, and I'm kinda disappointed. The AI is cheap as all hell and there's not much to the game besides the Arcade and Xbox Live modes. Then again, I don't know what I was expecting. It's decent. Not revoulutionary, as it was once hyped.

Anyone know why Capcom decided not to release this game in Japan? Fastest selling XBLA game and probably even more popular here in Japan than it is in other countries. Why'd they snub Japan like that? Seems like Capcom lost out on a nice tidy profit... and I wasted 2000 yen buying points for it...:\

Sweet. I hope Capcom decides to use Live (and other download services for the Wii and PS3) to release their library of fighters that never saw widespread play here (Vampire Saviour 2, anyone?). Likewise, I hope SNK is paying attention, also. Both companies have tremendous arcade libraries that would make for great impulse buys.

Pity some of Capcom's best titles are tied up with licenses, though. 4-player Alien versus Predator would be wonderful to play again, not to mention Dungeons & Dragons (and I suppose some of those Marvel fighters too ). Time to negotiate rights, perhaps?

I'm really enjoying this game, warts and all. It's really awesome that this has done so well so hopefully this will encourage Capcom to make some more of their fighting games available on Live Arcade and SNK also.

You people should all go back to your brokenFPS and Mortal Kombat games, because you obviously don't know anything about competition level games. I can't believe how many people whine here with absolutely nothing usefull to add.

I would like to say that although this isn't an arcade perfect port due to frame loss/upscaling issues, Its a good effort. My only complaint about this game is that the droppers still don't get penalized, and too many people call cheap on players that know how to play well.

trolls ftl! go back crying to your PS2s, 360 is a proper console

to be honest i just want an online fighting game, DoA4 sucked so i'm opting for this, this game is the reason i am getting M$ points and when i got my 360 i promised myself i would avoid getting any since they were a waste of money but i have ordered a card thing online and i'm getting this soon.

Personally, I like the game. I never played the arcade version so I really don't have anything to compare it to. I don't experience lag but have trouble finding a match online. Except, it works most if not all of the time if I create the match myself.

    You gotta love it.

  • Bane122

    Posted Aug 4, 2006 4:45 pm PT

You can spend $400 on a next gen machine that has semi next gen games (let's face it, most of them were just upped graphics nothing more, that's not next gen) and none sell that well.

Actually, yeah... updated grahics have pretty much been it for the last couple of "next-gen"s.

I have to agree with a number of the members here....the port was pretty poor. I am a huge fan of the game, but the controller is crap for SFII (as it should be. If Capcom was going to do this right, they would come up with a cheap NES style controller to play this game as it should be played. The online stuff is laggy and the AI is unbelievably hard, even for someone who was not great but certainly halfway decent at the game. Sound is garbage too I might add

Why is everyone freaking out about this game? I love me some fighting games like anyone else but I would have much preferred one of the more eclectic Capcom games. Maybe something from the Vs. or Alpha series. Something a little more up to date and faster paced. And why are there no updated graphics? Games of this low caliber are why real-life arcades died out in the first place. I can't wait for the real XBLA games like Gate Crashers and Hoop World. At least I will know my money is being spent on a new game and not being milked by anyone for all I'm worth. Like we all didn't spend enough quarters on this back in the day for them to release this for free, please.

$10 for a 10+ year old game on that $400 system and you are all set...wait what? people would rather play a 10 year old game that only cost them $10 then something that is actually a next gen game? that's sad.

This game is NOT cheap and difficult, you people apparently can't understand basic pattern recognition.
Aside from SF2 CE, this is the most balanced version of the game. You people that are complaining about the difficulty and calling it cheap are just making yourselves look bad.

Honestly, why is everyone getting excited over this? They used the WORST possible version of SF2. I might be alone but I've always hated Hyper-Fighting because it had abusivley cheap AI, submission holds given by the cpu took off half your life, heavily favored Ken/Ryu and essentially neutered Bison.(US)

Why not use that Ultimate SF2 that was released on a while back instead? Emulating what is essentially a CPS2 game couldn't be that much different.

But playing SF2 online is nothing new. I did it FIVE years ago with FinalBurn and Nebula.

By GS's own account the online play is sub-par but the base game itself is fine. Here's the kicker... unless I'm wrong (because I don't have an XBox), unlike games bought at the game store, you can't RETURN it if it doesn't meet your expectations, which I suspect alot of people old school SF2 fans are discovering. So you're out $10 or points or whatever...

Enjoy SF newbies... I'm still playing it on my SNES with friends in the same room!
