GCDC grabs ex-Blizzard exec for keynote

The 2006 GC Developer Conference in Leipzig, Germany, lands former Blizzard vice president for a keynote address.

Bill Roper--the Blizzard executive who abruptly departed from the acclaimed developer in 2003 to found his own studio, Flagship Studios--will attend this month's 2006 GC Developer Conference with a keynote speech. The conference--taking place in Leipzig, Germany, on August 21 to 23 this month--is a key European meeting place for the game industry. Roper's keynote will discuss "new technologies in the development process," conference organizers said in a statement. The recent downsizing of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in the US has spurred speculation that Germany's game conference could rise in prominence this year. Last year, the GC Developer Conference pulled in a record 28,000 attendees its first day. For more on the conference, visit its Web site.

Blizzard lost some people that were under the development of diablo series but they didn't loose the license.Blizzard still owns the license of diablo universe.Flashship studios can make a game that is similar to diablo but it's not gonna be neither called diablo. And wallydog be sensible... the day that blizzard goes bankrupt is gonna be a dark day for gaming industry and gamers... No one can doubt that.

why would we need a Diablo 3 anyway? to drug people with more item-mania? with countless hours of mindless killing? wiating to level up (and a +1 skill) for a whole day? for more POWERPLAY which killed the soul of FRP, and turned gaming to an automatic job?

you've got World Of Warcraft anyway!

I will cheer and support Blizzard again, the day they'll create a REAL GAME again, instead of a powerplay.

I think it's great, I'd love to see GCDC take over E3, simply because it makes the confrence more European than E3 is. It'd be great to see a European group confrence leading the way forward for gaming industry for a change, and if it did take over eventually it'd start roling in benefits for gamers in the EU.

Come on GCDC !

The Conference will probably take over as the next E3. It's going to be annoying next year. . .

Why is everyone talking about how much Blizzard owns? Bill Roper is now with FLAGSHIP Studios, not BLIZZARD. I can't wait for Hellgate...hopefully we get some more info on it from the keynote.

i dont understand why since WOW everybody thinks that blizz only cares about money money.
WoW is a great game, like all other blizz games. the only thing is that u need to pay monthly fee, but that's so blizz will be able to maintain the servers, keep updating and keep improving the game, they dont charge 15$ a month for ntng...

And no, i dont play WoW ^^

I hope GDC turns into the next E3. Us normal folk(meaning people outside of the gaming industry) need a place to go geek out with the rest of our gaming bretheren. Otherwise, who knows what sort of chaos and havoc will insue for years to come.

I hope Hellgate kicks ass.

wallydog63,

I guess you missed Gamespot's article about Blizzard looking for people with RTS level design background eh? Or how they pulled their console team to focus on their PC projects? Just watch, Starcraft 2 baby! Aside that, did it ever occur to you that a) Blizzard thought it might be a good idea to rake in the money and inject that revenue back into their studio or b) that Vivendi has a say in how they market WoW? It's not so black & white man.

No offence to you who like blizzard, but I say screw blizzard. I don't like mmo's and that's all blizzard cares about now cause it's all about the money. The last thing they put out for the rest of us was warcraft 3 expantion and it was ok but not as good as there earlier stuff (starcraft anyone).
Has anyone heard even a rumor of anything they're doing other than online crap. I haven't . None of my gaming friends have either. So to blizzard I say screw you, I don't want anything you're putting out. Too many other good games coming out ak. fallout 3, dark messiah, gothic 3, supreme comander, and a whole lot more. Truly, I hope bankruptcy strikes you soon and hard. They've turned there backs on the casual gamer and went straight for the money.

I think it's great that theyre bringing in veterans (or atleast people who know how to make good-quality games based on, if not the orginal, quality of Warcraft and Warcraft 2) to add their valuable knownage to the mix in these kinds of things.
WoW is already a fantastic game, so this expansion should make it even better!
It's nice that they havent forgotten the guy who left, since he was such a special part of Blizzard before!
