No prerelease Gears of War demo

Epic Games' Mark Rein says a sampling of the Xbox 360 sci-fi shooter won't happen before game's release; other downloadable content is higher priority.

Good news for Gears of War fans came out of Epic Games today, as the game's official release date was announced. The sci-fi shooter will hit stores on November 12, just five days before the launch of the PlayStation 3.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all good news out of Cary, North Carolina. Mark Rein, Epic's vice president, gave the latest on the possibility of a Gears of War demo in a post on the game's official Web site, and it doesn't look good.

"I don't see any way we could do a demo before the game comes out. We've said that before. Demos take a long time to create and polish, and we can't afford to get derailed like that if we want to have the game in stores by Thanksgiving," he said.

However, it doesn't mean a demo will never come out, as he doesn't exclude the possibility of a trial coming out after the game is released.

He added, "I know we have some very cool plans--not 100 percent solid so too early to give any specifics--for additional downloadable, so that might take a higher priority than creating a demo."

Epic still appears to be completely entrenched in developing the game, as Rein refuted rumors that the game was almost completed and was just being used to distract consumers from the PlayStation 3 launch. "If it were going to be finished sooner, we'd be releasing it sooner, and we would have told you about Emergence Day a long time ago."

    I don't know if you guys know this, but, Epic is under a lot of stress to make this game. They stayed up for like 3 nights straight to finish the GOW E3 demo. I saw it in a little documentary thing made about it. So, if your complaining about the demo, realize that they are really busy and only have the time to do the game so that it will turn out perfect. =============================================================Hey I understand I'm not complaining. I just dont know much about these messages that were sent out by the characters in the game can someone tell me about it?

    it does look good, lets hope it delivers and is not a flash in the pan, its not looking like that atm but weve seen overhype like this time and time again. It comes at a great time as well, while most will be ready to get their ps3 and their 'gameX 36' and 'gamX 876' we will beable to play gears of war, which for once is the first game of a new franchise. with a strong showing already they can only make loads better for the next one. We all love a little console bash so heres mine, i hope this game when it comes out sways all the ps3 hopefuls to turn to the 360 as for near £300 less or $300 all ur geting is the same thing. A game playing machine foremost, i pity the fool who buys these solely for DVD playback . . a dvd player is like 15 quid dudes : /

    Um Epic would it be much better to GIVE US THE E3 DEMO?!!?
    Just give us the same E3 demo that Cliffy has demonstrated and everything will be all good.

    In fact they need to release demos for every game that was played on the 360 in E3.

    additional content? if its not just maps maybe its themes, skins, and maybe even patches and weapons. Looks good though, but i think id rather have a very kickass game than a kickass demo and a sucky finished product.

    geez, i just came here to see what all the hype is about this game cuz it looked interesting and all I find is some staunch x-box fanboys trying to do a roast-a-thon going on 16 pages now of crap and banter. Most of your lame comments don't even have anything to do with the game......

    I think it looks cool, but I have not even seen a in-game demo or how it will look or play. Looks just as good as Resistance IMO or Unreal 07 (i know i know same company). As for the morons that are trying to say Halo will be 49.99 this IS microsoft were talking about, they have been selling games for 60 and people still buy so don't think they'll give you that 10 dollar disc if they know your gonna pay anyway........especially if it's Halo. Now no trash talking ladies, I know ps3 will be just as exp so before I hear you babies start crying with OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!! Just know it's thoughts, opinions, and NEVER is fact till the big-wigs says so's.

    To all the nay sayers: How many of you played a Halo or Halo 2demo pre release? How about Oblivion? And how many pre release demos absolutely sucked? Just because there will be no demo doesn't mean this will be a crap game. Maybe it just means there devoting ALL their energy to making this game as great as possible by Nov. 12

    I really do think he's being honest. They're probably under quite a bit of pressure to get GoW out in it's highest possible quality at a time where they can parry the PS3 launch. Every day someone is working on the demo is a day someone isn't working on the final game.

    They are just building up hype for the game. I think it's better to not make a demo so that emergence will be much more important to gamers. After the game is released there should be a demo though for the people who aren't confident about buying the game. I sure don't need a demo because after seeing the first level in action I just can't wait to buy the game.

    No demo is really bad news.. especially they are charging 69.99 for the game package. Movies do that too- many movies have no sneak preview so critics cant give bad reviews for it since people wont be seeing it if it gets bad reviews.

    What don't you understand? GOW is a 3rd party game thus $10 more expensive. Halo 3 will be a first party game thus $10 cheaper.

    First party games are typically cheaper because just like they take a 100-200 hit per console sold in order to have high installation base but they will also sell their games cheaper for the same reasons.

    And yes you incorrectly made the claim that because Microsoft publishes this game it makes it a first party game then proceeded to give a url trying to back it up that made no mention of first party game or not.

    XBM will probably have a Demo of it before it comes out on Marketplace.He doesn't exclude the possibility of a trial coming out after the game is released.

    They dont want to release a demo cause that way everybody will not realize that Gears... is another regular shooter-action-adventure game with better graphics.

    Oh well I guess that confirms that the "Big Announcement" was the Nov. 12 release date. If so then, meh that wasnt such a big announcement, as I dont view dates as big announcements unless its the date for a new console. Having said that still looking forward to getting this game when it ships.

    The true mark of a first party title is the developer, NOT the publisher. This is the contention of game developers such as myself and my co-workers, and they are the ones I am more likely to side with - not fanboys who are willing to throw a tantrum about $10.

    And I will say it again - I couldn't care less for Gears. I just hate argumentative fanboys making stuff up and citing webpages that don't prove their point anyway.

    Gears of War is a legit Game of the Year contender and does not need a demo to increase the hype.

    I still want a demo though.
