Mortal Kombat heads to Wii

Nintendo's next-gen system to play host to final current-gen installment of violent fighter early next year.

From day one, Nintendo's strategy with the Wii has been to make games accessible to everyone. Apparently, "everyone" also includes bloodthirsty brawlers.

Next year, the seminal violent-fighting series Mortal Kombat is set to make its first appearance on a Nintendo system since 2004's Deception. A Midway representative has told GameSpot that Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will arrive on the Wii in the first quarter of 2007. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game are still slated for release later this year.

Midway has already announced its support for the Wii with adaptations for the feature films The Ant Bully and Happy Feet, but Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is the first confirmed Midway title to target an older audience. A Wii version of Rampage: Total Destruction from the publisher has also been rumored, but its existence has not yet been confirmed.

You don't have to use the Wii remote to play games, it has been mentioned that you can use a regular controller >_>

    SIgh... Mortal Kombat...
Although I'm sure it will bring alot of other people to the Wii, I really dont care for any of the MK Series really. They just take all of their blood and gore effects way to far... seriously! Its like you tap someone on their shoulder and their arm randomly explodes and they start bleeding profusely.
Oh well... MK won't keep me from getting my Wii. XD

    jono128:
I understand where you're coming from with that. If Wii has an alternate "main" controller then that may take away from the focus of revolutionary gameplay. However, and I hope you can agree, I would hate to see terrible versions of Wii games just because the Wii-mote/attachments do not work well as the only means of control. I wouldn't want to see developers becoming nervous about creating a "standard" control schemed game just because the mechanics may not translate well. I strongly applaud Nintendo for creating the opportunity for a new type of gameplay but just because one door opens does another have to close?

Most excellent, having MKA for Wii.
And as for the record I will be downloading MK Trilogy for my future Wii, that is if it will be available for download.

This will be interesting how they make use of the Wimote. They could just use the gamecube controller instead. Who knows?!?!? Only time will tell

Pass. I think I'll go with Smash Bros. Brawl instead.

I disagree with jono128. While I am completely excited of the possibilities of the wiimote. I don't know if it will translate well into the fighting genre. For years we have seen arcade sticks made specifically for fighting games.
Most newer fighting are still arguably with a D-Pad as opposed to analog sticks. I believe MK may be a flagship to show how the Classic Controller
can still be relevant and a worthy purchase.

  • jono128

    Posted Aug 3, 2006 1:02 pm GMT

Chrisp1, that idea would not be beneficial; a sleu of different controllers, especially traditional ones such as the GC controller, completely undermines Nintendo's goals with Wii.

I can understand having to play SSB3 with a traditional controller, since the series' fighting mechanics have centered on how far you tilt the analog stick, but developers cannot have such a closeminded approach to developing fighting games.

If you don't like the new controller, don't get the system.

  • Gobo666

This is going to be AWSOME. C'mon it's going to be a blast with the wiimote.

Not with that Controller!, No way midway I have to pass

    -----------------

You do realize not all games will use motion sensing as the sole means of interaction. Nintendo will probably be releasing other types of controllers (you can use GC controllers so maybe thats how this will work). but that aside, maybe there will be some sort of power glove/power boot control system....that would be cool.

EDIT: apologies if someone already suggested this btw, i didn't have time to read all these comments...

Since MK Ultimate, I didn't enjoy MK anymore, and MK U wasn't as good as MK II.
Anyway, it's good to see more games coming for the wii, but where the hell is Killer Instinct????

come people i want to see iori kicking butt on the Wii. King of Fighters XI would be the perfect start. We all know ps2 does not want 2-D games,Xbox is dead, and 360 is the same as ps2 i dont think they will want 2-d games. So the Wii is the perfect system for King Of fighters XI

This is great news, and just what the Wii needed. It seems like they get more 3rd party support all the time, which is fantastic. I still wonder how they'll make good use of the conroller, though. Special fatality motions, mabye?

well in all honesty I believe street fighter really put the fighting game genre on the map more then anything, however mk took it even further and the shock value in mk was far greater then any other game, however I kinda wished that the final mk game would have gone back to more of the 2d fighting game, thats when mk games were good, as 2d platformers. well im sure they will do the 3d much better this time around regardless of that, so cant wait to play it, as far as the wii goes itll probably use the classic gamepad style insteasd ogf the wiimote

I never enjoyed a Mortal Kombat game.

  • smbius

    Posted Aug 2, 2006 4:37 pm GMT

Mortal Kombat was a decent franchise but none of its games had no balance or depth whatsoever. Most the games were mostly fun to watch but not really fun to play. It went downhill once people were used to seeing players get decapitated. I still remember when stupid kids would bring paper sheets of their character moves to the arcade. I agree with some people here knowing that MK didn't really stick to me.

  • blannthum

    Posted Aug 2, 2006 3:53 pm GMT

I think thats cool. Almost every game I've seen so far the Wii were sorta kiddie. But now one of the best fighting games ever along with TEKKEN and other few is coming to spice it up. It would be cool how or if they implement the motion sensitive controller to the game. Man, thats something to think about.
