Confirmed: No Unreal Tournament 2007 till 2007

Midway says the PC edition of its much-awaited shooter won't ship until "first half" of next year; PS3 version still TBA, more Xbox 360 hints dropped.

In October 2003, Atari announced that Unreal Tournament 2004 had been delayed...until 2004. Though it was originally slated for a February release, the latest installment in Epic Games' wildly popular PC shooter didn't make it to market until mid-March.

Now it appears that this year, Unreal fans will be feeling a sense of déjà vu vis-à-vis the latest installment in the series. Today, representatives for Midway Games, which took over Unreal publishing duties from Atari in July 2004, announced that Unreal Tournament 2007 will not be released in time for the 2006 holiday season.

"Right now, UT 2007 (PC) is slated to hit in the first half of 2007," the spokesperson told GameSpot. When it was announced in May 2005, the game had a broad "2006" release date.

While frustrating for those hoping for an egg-nog-fueled yuletide fragfest, the delay will hopefully allow Epic to fine-tune UT 2007's gameplay much like it did with its predecessor. When UT 2004 finally did ship, it was one of the most critically acclaimed PC titles of the year. Since then, it has become one of the most popular PC shooters on the market and has been a prime draw at many gaming tournaments.

As for the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 2007, its ship date remains undetermined. Interestingly, though, Midway's response did not mention the PlayStation 3 version by name. "The next gen version(s) [of UT2007] have yet to be tagged with an exact ship date yet." Earlier this year, PSM magazine had claimed that UT 2007 would be a launch title for the PS3, which goes on sale in the US on November 17.

When asked if the mention of multiple next-gen editions meant UT 2007 might be coming to the Xbox 360, the rep demurred, saying, "Nothing is yet confirmed ... [but] I would say that your assumption is relatively plausible." At the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006, Midway CEO David Zucker said the game was being released for "for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3," but the company has subsequently refused to confirm the game is coming to Microsoft's platform.

Speaking of the 360, UT 2007's delay means the sole release from Epic this year will be for the next-gen console. Gears of War, Epic's third-person sci-fi/horror shooter, is scheduled for a holiday 2006 release--for now, anyway. A "big announcement" regarding the game is expected later this week.

    its ok everyone is bashing PS3 for bad games ... sounds like wat 360 did when it started. U need to remember gears of war is a game that took a few years to make... just wait for the same amount of time to pass for ps3 i garauntee the same happens and baller games are released for it too.

    I think the delay stems from the fact that windows vista is delayed also and that UT 2007 needs vista to look better because of direct x10 wich will change gaming again....it's gonna be better for the game..hopefully vista would be out and then the adjustment for vista will have been made and then they could release the game without too much bugs...also the video cards at that time will probably support direct x 10 better plus the cpu might be quadcore and get the game flowing at light speed...so better wait to get a good game than a crappy one....i just hope to see it on the 360 too....

    UT2004 was awesome, I hope that this game lives up to that high standard the series has set, from everything I have seen so far it seems poised to do so. Like soulknight63133, I don't care if this game is a killer app or not, I'll still play it if I think it is fun. Also a lot of games that get a 7 or below on gamespot or ign I find fun to play, even if a lot of what they have to offer could be better. I think gamespot should add another ranking to its system, fun factor as a lot of games which might seem bad are actually fun to play for whatever reason can't be described technically.

    A Killer app is the WORST computing term i have EVER heard.

    Now, regarding this story: Everybody knows UT07 is coming ot the 360. So what? Will be best on PC, naturally. FPSes always are.

    Define killer app. Is it a title that sold a million copies or more? In that case Oblivion and GRAW will be killer apps and so will COD2. I personally don't care if a title is a "killer app" or not. What DOES matter if I personally like the game and enjoy playing it. And you "so called" gamers should realize thats the most important factor. Phantom Dust is one of my favorite games I ever played, and wether it sold a million or just one copy worldwide makes no difference to me. If you're gonna spend money on a game, it being a "killer app" is useless if you don't enjoy playing it.

Well here's the answer. There isn't any. And come November, it would've been a year since the 360 release, and yet not one single killer app. Then of course, is the fact that the two titles your both touting as future killer-apps are FPS'. Im going to give you a slap to reality and inform you that not everyone plays FPS'. So come next year, Halo 3 WON'T be the killer app of the year. Why? I point you too Wii's Mario and Smash titles, and PS3's MGS4, FF, etc. You can bash them all you want Warlock, but your ava still shows Cloud. Hypocrisy at its greatest.

    wtf? no killer Apps? Ghost Recon 3 is already out, Rainbow Six: Vegas and Splinter Cell DA are coming out before the end of the year, Gears of War hasn't been proven yet but with the amount of hype involved with the game and the impressive gameplay videos that everybody with a 360 has seen it may as well be called a killer app. Oblivion was pretty killer too, just try and deny that one was good.

    Also HALO isn't the 360's only killer app, and they're not all shooters either, maybe you might have heard of FABLE or Forza or Wolfenstien or Project Gotham or maybe, if your lucky you caught on to series such as Ninja Gaiden or Dead or Alive. I suppose Bioshock or Lost Planet or maybe even Mass Effect might be regarded as somewhat killer.

    And let's not forget the multiplatform games such as Half-Life 2, Burnout, Grand Theft Auto, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six (Already mentioned above i know) Resident Evil 5.etc

    Please understand that HALO3 and Gears of War were EXAMPLES of SOME of the killer apps the 360 has, NOT the entirety

    Unreal Tournament was great on PC, but I wish they'd wait and just make another Unreal Championship for the consoles. UC2 was far better than the original Unreal Championship, which was just a console port of UT2004.

    If UT2007 is part of Live Anywhere, us guys using consoles are going to get our asses whipped by anyone on a PC...

    everyones saying there are announcements (regarding GOW, see article) about a release date or a demo . . . those are not big announcements . . . when we find out what it is . . . it will be huge . . . probably a special partnership between M$ and epic . . . does anyone really wana kno why UT 2007 is being delayed ???

    two words . . . . live anywhere . . . they are waiting till vista is out (or atleast until xplatform play is a go). . . the game will sell consoles . . . vista programs . . . and will be the first BIG game in the live anywhere's existance . . . besides when people learn this some ps3 fans will hold off to see what else M$ has up thr sleeves.

    makes sense to me. pls comment and let me kno what u think

    i just got into pc gaming, but im looking foward to unreal tournament 2007. i heard about the older ones and they sound great. too bad we're gonna have to wait awhile.

    Try using more coheret sentences then.

    Mentioning the Xbox, and 360 seperately would insinuate just that; seperate consoles.

    It does. The GC got FF: CC and the Wii is getting a similar treatment, yet the main series games remained on one platform due to various factors.

Ok I'll concede the Smash Bros deal however the new Zelda is looking to be the killer app of the Wii. If it ends up being only Smash Bros again then the Wii is in for some serious trouble...

    There was a FF game on Xbox? Seems that we're crossing the line of reality here to make moot points. FFXI was on the 360, a port of a 4 year old PS2 game (in Japan anyway). Though SE is making another multiplatform MMORPG (PS3, 360, and PC); FFXIII isn't it. That was announced as an exclusive, and given the fact that the main FF market is Japan, a 360 port is unlikely (aside from the fact that main series titles have been exclusive since '97/ set aside '98 PC version of FFVII)

    As for MGS, that's about as logical as saying that DOA will appear on PS consoles because the PS2 got a port of DOA2 back then. Kojima cited the poor quality of the MGS2 port on Xbox as a main reason why MGS4 will remain exclusive. Then added that if he were to do a Wii or 360 game, it'd be a new IP or a different series.

    FYI, Super Smash Bros Melee was the most successful GC game. It outsold Zelda, SMS, and every other Nintendo IP or third party game, so it is the Wii's killer app.

    The 360 doesen't have a killer app because it doesen't need a killer app right now. It's not just basic marketing it's basic common sense. Being the only next gen system on the market for some time now the only thing MS needs to do is showcase off the system capabilities. Only when the other systems come out then they will bring out thier system sellers. Gears of War is a prime example. I'm also going to give you a slap of reality that a killer app is a killer app regardless of what genre it is. If you need another does of reality Google Halo 2 in relation to both the revenue generated and units sold in comparison to ALL media. That'll be real enough for you. So what flawed logic do you have that Halo 3 won't be either? Smash titles are you kidding me? Zelda, Metroid, and proper Mario titles will sell the Wii. I can't believe you even put a Smash Bros in the same league as a game like Halo. Furthermore, MGS4 and FF will sell the PS3 but seeing as how much the costs increase every year to make those games, I think it's highly unlikely that the developers are going to invest in the exclusivity of a system that is also the most expensive. Take into account that XBOX already got Metal Gear and Final Fantasy and it's a good chance those will come to the 360 as well.

    I really think that the PS3 is holding back the game. Limitations on the PS3 are making the PC version suck that much more me thinks.


    Like they got rid of the super jumping cause it would be unfair to the ps3 users who couldnt really do it with a controller.

    I have to say that UT 2007 was a great release for the PS3. This sort of hurts the PS3. With Gears of War and Halo 3 announced for the Xbox 360 this definitely hurts the PS3 in the shooter department. I wouldn't exactly put all of my money on Killzone being the answer, as the first one was a just a fair title. But Metal Gear Solid 4 looks great. So at least there is that title.

    So a FEW companies that were once exclusive to the Playstation brand went multiplatform, it's no big deal. Sony isn't losing every single developer. You guys make it sound like Sony is going to be sunk within the next year. Well if thats the case then Microsoft is in real trouble.

    The reason why companies are going multiplatform is because of the high developing costs. No, it's not because of the price of the PS3. It even effects the Xbox. Sony still has a foothold in the industry because of the developers. Their still going to get exclusive games from the these companies regardless.

    Bummer. Oh well, the new version of America's Army should be out soon anyway. Plus I got lots of Oblivion and etc left to play.

    I could care less about any one platform's "exclusive" titles. If a game is good enough, it will go to other platforms as soon as the money from the original "exclusive" platform starts to dry up.

    Thanks Seymour47 I haven't played Quake I will rent it to see if its my thing. I just like the way the 2004 I believe it was, but I liked the way it looked. It def seems worth a try.

    To Mike_mgoblue dude, you summed it all up, i need not to defend 360 after your comment, so true look at all the exclusives for 360, and wow look at the few for ps3 the best was smackdown vs raw 2007 getting scrapped for ps3 lol

    I can't help myself. Look for all of you out there who say that Its not exclusive if its on PC thats bs more people play consoles than PC and its not called Console/PC wars its called CONSOLE WARS. Halo series is exculsive to the 360 CONSOLE ONLY PC is not in this. Then it would be PC/CONSOLE WAR WHICH IT IS NOT! The Bottom line the 360 whether you like it or not is the only place that you can play GTA4, Oblivion, Lost Planet, Saints Row, Ninety Nine Nights, Gears of War, Mass Affect, Ninja Gaiden, LOTR BFME2, Crackdown, Now UT 07. More and more this is shaping up to be a favorable match up for M$ and lets also get it straight that I would get a PS3 cause I like some games that Sony has the only problem is that 600 pricetag and the fact that the 600 is the only one that can have future upgrades sux. But I digress I still consider games that come to the PC as well as Only one Console to be exclusive because PC isn't as big a competitior as it once was as far as the gaming market goes. They are mainly a MMO thing now.

    sasuke55, whether or not you will like UT 2007 depends on one thing. If you are a person that likes strategy type FPS like Battlefield 2, Counter Strike, or Rainbow Six you might not like UT. On the other hand, if you like FPS like Quake and such, you will love UT. UT 2007 appears to be shaping up as one of the most visually stunning games ever created. And, if track record is any indication, the game should be incredibly entertaining to boot.

    wow people get real emotional over these stuff. I'm just glad to see it may come for the 360 I haven't played this before but I saw the other one on G4 and was like OH shi** what is that and by then I had already traded in my Xbox for money toward 360/psp. But this is def a title I would rent to see how I liked it.

    Ill pick it up if UT2007 comes to the xbox360. I hope it does because its the only way Ill be getting it. In my eyes if you want a ps3 you obvioulsly like 3rd person games with poor dubbing. while the gameplay may be good I still think the ps3 will look a little worse than the xbox360. the 1080p and the hdmi inputs are what i wish xbox had, but the game list upcoming and present is so so so much better for the 360, and heck its designed for americans so Id much rather support it.
