Ready at Dawn licenses Daxter engine

Developer of PSP platformer confirms that its engine will show up in other companies' titles as well as its own upcoming project.

When the 3D platformer Daxter saw release on the PSP, it earned high marks for its visual prowess and gameplay that retained much of the appeal of the game's PlayStation 2 parent series, Jak and Daxter. Now the engine that powered Daxter has been licensed to other companies, Ready at Dawn president and cofounder Didier Malenfant has confirmed for GameSpot. However, exactly how many companies are working with the Daxter engine is unclear at the moment.

"Unfortunately the list of our licensees is confidential and it will be up to them to announce their titles when they see fit," Malenfant said.

Ready at Dawn isn't about to abandon the engine it built, as Malenfant said the developers will use it for their next title. That doesn't necessarily mean the studio's next game will be more of the same, as the engine is supposedly quite versatile.

"The engine could be used to do a wide variety of third and first person games," Malenfant noted, "and it would actually produce quite awesome racing games too."

ya the Daxter engine is a great step for the PSP. I think it si going to be a fresh and great start for more good games to come to the PSP. also look at the great game from Insomniac Games when they got some partnership with Naughty Dog they made some great games with that engine also sharing the engine like that give more choices for more great game. This is a nice step to see Ready at Dawn studios do and i hope to see more game from them soon cause Daxter Rocks!

Daxter was easily one of the best games to show off the PSP's potential. The engine they developed was perfect for 3-D games and i'm just glad to see they're sharing it to other devs.

Some nice things will happen to the PSP . An engine like that could kill the GC , not to mention the DS .

Daxter isn't really a cute platformer. The Jak, Ratchet, and Sly series are among the best of the past 5 years. They are in a league of their own.

That's good to see because the engine really can exploit the system's strengths and mask it's weaknesses better than almost every other game on the system.

Great engine to have for a game, too. Although it probably would never ever happen, it would be incredible to see this game (Daxter) on the 360. I am not going to get a PS3 so this is why I say this.

How about an RPG that uses the Daxter engine

Hmm it would be nice to see a 3-D RPG on PSP in a large 3-D world and have virtually no in game longing times what so ever, just like Daxter.

Great news! Daxter was a fantastic game and the engine that ran it made all the better. Can't wait to see what other developers will create with it!

Bah. The PSP is dead as ding-dongs. I may hang onto mine long enough to try Jaffe's tear jerker. But if that doesn't fly, I'm selling the dumb thing.

the game did look quite good and licensing an engine really opens the doors for more psp games to look really good. perhaps this will help increase psp sales?

That's a good idea, considering how good Daxter did. I think we should look out for their next title, it'll probabaly be as good if not better.

  • blackIceJoe

    Posted Jul 31, 2006 9:33 am PT

Well thats cool for them. Even though I think it was not that great of an engine it was great for the PSP. Almost no load times and I like that. Its not like I did not like it I just am more of a fan of engine's like Unreal,Quake and Offset. But it is cool to see it being licensed. So I think its good to see it licensed that way they bring in more money and that way they can make more games.
