UK five-O want Reservoir Dogs deep-sixed

British police say Eidos' game based on Tarantino film goes too far with violence toward policemen.
By Tim Surette, GameSpot
Posted Jul 28, 2006 3:47 pm PT

Eidos Interactive's Reservoir Dogs is set for release this October but not down under in Australia. The game has been banned by the Aussie ratings board because it has been deemed "ultra-violent."

Now the game is causing another ruckus, this time across a different pond. Like the well-dressed bank robbers in the game, Reservoir Dogs is coming under attack by the police. The Yorkshire Post is reporting that several British police chiefs have condemned the game because of its violence toward police officers.

"Players can take police officers hostage and go on to burn out their eyes with a lit cigar, chop off their fingers with a cigar cutter, and hack off their ears using a scalpel, while [the police officers] plead for their lives and scream in pain," says the Post.

West Yorkshire Police Federation chairman Tom McGhie called the game a "sickening glorification of violence against police officers," according to the Post. "It's impossible to see how such a game can have anything other than a highly damaging effect on how people perceive and react to police officers."

Nevertheless, the Post says that the British Board of Film Classification has OK'd the game's release in the UK, and copies of the game are expected to hit store shelves in late August. Reservoir Dogs is scheduled for a US release on the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 in October.

It seems that only Nazis and aliens are free to be blasted away in games these days. Another Eidos game, 25 to Life, was lambasted by politicians and peace officers for being antipolice, and a group of sex workers called for a ban on the Grand Theft Auto games, claiming gamers were rewarded for the "rape and murder of prostitutes."

Games don't drive me to violence. Idiots drive me to violence.

God, people hate the police as it is. The game of Resevoir Dogs isn't going to do the police any more damage than stand-up comedians, the Resevoir dogs movie and the police themselves have already done.

I wouldn't like to play a game that involves torturing anybody while they beg for mercy. It's one thing to shoot people etc in games and in film, but torture is another kind of violence and not one I'd particularly like to play with in a game.

"I don't like the double standard (in other words hypocrisy) this shows. If the game had featured standard game "victims" the police group wouldn't have said a thing. What have they said in the past about other similar games .. nothing.

But *now* they feel like they have to say something. Has everything that has gone before in games Ok? So GTA was OK and acceptable with the Police Fed?

Did they ever say anything about the film when it was released??
hmm ... why not? "

Ofcourse it is hypocrisy. These govenments want the fear and respect of authorities that enforce their will upon the populace. Never mind the fact, that most people who enjoy being in law enforcement, enjoy it for the power they gain over the average citizen.

They would have better off keeping thier mouths shut because all this is going to do is draw more attention to the game.

Making a stink about videogames for any reason is a trend I'd like to see buried and forgotten. This story in particular sounds way too forced and desperate, the movie never caught any heat years ago but all of a sudden the video game version which isn't even out yet does? Somebody hit the reset button for Earth already.

I can't believe he used the death of fellow police workers just to get a quick jab at games. He's trying to pass off fiction as facts in his statements.

Heh, I won't be paying any attention anyway.

when a police state becomes part of natural life(in the big 3(north america, europe, asia)), they don't want the people to fight back and this game gives em that enjoyment. personally i HATE police because i have been over 79 times(no joke, not even 28 yet) and profiled in every single direction. Been asked if was drunk or high a million different times(not literally) and im straight edge, so scre em

The people who can't see the difference between a interactive game medium and a non-interactive movie are exactly the type of people who will play this game and go on to do something stupid and damage the industry as a result.

I swear sometimes I wish you needed a license to buy video games, don't care the age. This way everyone who plays them will take responsiblity for thier own choices and actions as they should be doing in the first place.

If it seems like I'm irked at both sides, you're right!

Well, I'm not interested in buying this but I agree with diablobasher, why do police condemn this one where there are so many other things like other games and movies that show police abuse? There's GTA: San Andreas and in that Silent Hill movie, Cybil got burned slowly, I don't know why this would be any different from GTA police violence but if gamers do go too far and start doing those kinds of stuff then I guess it would be alright for the police to condemn movies, books, and games thatinspire people to do those things.

Im not interested in this game, never have been, game/movie crossovers and vica versa never work well.

However, who in the HELL do our police officers think they are in trying to condemn it, there are countless countless movies and books out there where police officers are beaten up or portreyed in a less than upholding light, im reading one right now for example, its called The Yeare's Midnight by Ed O'Connor, in which one policeman goes mental and almost throws the man cheating on his wife off a cliff after abusing his position to find out ho the man was, and a police woman is brutally attacked, and kidnapped.

Why in the hell is a game any different, people react wayyy too much to things like this, they need to just get the hell over it, or at least get there facts straight before they complain. There is no rape in GTA for example, this was something cooked up by misinformed idiots who think they know a game because they heard one or two things about it. (unless there is rape, but i never saw any while playing it)

What you can do do someone in a game is no worse than what you can do to them in your imagination, and if you continue to condemn or lobby to ban games, then what people want to do to you in their imagination is far more likely to become reality than it would be if they were doing it in a game instead.

WELL, games are suppose to be just for fun not full of scandals... now, there is nothing that can make games MORE violent, or MORE sexual etc... there is no need to makes games extremely bloddy and full of gore... games CAN be fun without blood or sexual themes!

You know it's only a matter of time before some Nazis sue because COD promotes violence towards Nazis. With all the problems in the world today I have to say if you get upset because of a video game then you have too much time on your hands.

Resovoir Dogs seems like a really trashy game to me. Torture and violence while people are pleading and others are standing around trying to help the hostage...that's going way too far. I'm glad it was banned in Australia, and I'm surprised it hasn't been banned in the UK, as well.
