Endless Saga's saga ends

[UPDATE] Webzen confirms that next-gen PlayStation 3 and PC fantasy-based MMORPG is canceled; publisher won't ignore PS3, planning future PS3 titles.

While some fantasy freaks will argue that campy 1984 film The Neverending Story was blatant false advertising, the same can not be said for Webzen's Endless Saga. The game doesn't have an end--but unfortunately for fans, it's because it doesn't even have a beginning.

Webzen today confirmed to GameSpot that the PlayStation 3 and PC project has been canceled. The fantasy-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game was scheduled to hit stores sometime in 2007.

[UPDATE] A representative from Webzen phoned GameSpot to explain why the prioject was cancelled. "[Endless Saga] was under project review, and the board of directors decided [the game] wasn't as innovative as some of the other projects [Webzen] is working on," said the rep.

Endless Saga was being targeted for the Japanese audience, but its resources have now been allocated to more globally focused projects, like APB for the XBox 360 and Huxley for the Xbox 360 and PC.

Endless Saga was lined up to be one of the PS3's first MMOGs, but its absence leaves the genre fairly sparse on the console. PS3 MMOGs currently in the works are a DC Comics-based game, an untitled Square Enix project, and the ambitious X Quest, from former Halo creator Alex Seropian.

The rep was also clear that Webzen is not ignoring the PlayStation 3, and said the company is currently in discussions with Sony, though nothing has yet been announced.

plenty of other things to keep me busy until Webzen gets another MMO going on the PS3.

What they need to do is break MS/PC exclusivity on Huxley and APB an make a PS3 version. Then make all platforms should play in the same online universe. They would make an butt load of money.

Yet another blow for the PlayStation 3.

ummmm how is this a blow.......I would hardly consider this game a cash camel for Sony. I love how when one thing goes wrong with Sony everobody has to see it as the Apocalypse for this company. Nobody see's that the x-box is last gen but is STILL being sold at a loss which in a word is pathetic.

Saw this coming. Endless Saga was announced on July 22nd 2005. Tomorrow that will be one year ago. And since that July 22nd there had been no news on Endless Saga. But this isn't the end of the world. There will be plenty of MMOs to play.

Wow! The endless saga.....ended? Wasn't exactly endless then was it? All joking aside. That really sucks. Still one less reason to even look at a PS3. I guess I will stick with WoW and my pc.

It's best they cancel it, them just drop another standard Wow-clone MMO. Now they can put resources in developing a brand new revolutionary game.

You know, they could do more cool things with action combat and environment interaction if they started programming these MMO games exclusively with broadband netcode in mind. As it stands, they're still coddling to dial-up users so the level of complexity between client and server is mired in the stone age. Once we get past these silly hurdles (just advertise it as a system requirement:"Broadband 128k required") and we see large scale shared experiences, I think MMOs will become more respected again. - imagine hundreds of online players experiencing exactly the same Ageia effects instead of random client side fluff physics like we see now? Stuff like that. Shared immersion, you might call it.
