Metal Gear online tourney kicks off next week

North American Subsistence players set to compete over eight weeks for pride and prizes.

In March, Konami's Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence gave players the opportunity to play against each other with the introduction of a new online multiplayer mode to the series. Now they'll get a chance to prove who's the best Snake of them all with an official online tournament.

Sponsored by iGames, the tournament will be open to North American Subsistence players and will run from July 29 to September 17. Each weekend during that span, participants will compete in as many deathmatch and team deathmatch games as they wish and will be rated with a system intended to judge overall skill level instead of wins and losses. After the first seven weeks of qualifying matches, the best 128 solo players and the top 32 teams will compete in a final elimination round.

Each day's winners will receive a Metal Gear Saga DVD or a copy of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. The overall deathmatch champion will earn a 32-inch Hyundai HDTV with speakers and stand, while the best team deathmatch squad will win a Logitech surround-sound speaker system. All of the tournament winners will get an in-game FoxHound champion emblem.

For more information on the tournament, go to the official iGames rules page. For more on Subsistence, check out GameSpot's full review.

I'm tired of all the "why isn't this on xbox?" comments. Stop being stupid, MGS will never be on xbox/360 ever again.

As for the tournament: I wish i had known more about this earlier. I kept hearing about it, but without a date to go on i kinda got tired to training up and stopped playing for a few weeks (an MMO took over as well). Now i fear it's too late to get back into my "grove" and get back to the skill i as at. That and, it's probably too late to sign up now.

nice idea. but then whats the point for MGO winners to each receive a copy of MGS: Subsistence if they all won by playing that game?

Luckily, I'm not that bad at MGO. I've taken on some good players and schooled them.

Win the game you're playing? Are they expecting a lot of weekend warrior rentals? Would be fun to spectate, anyway. Finally... an online use for my network adapter!

    Cool.

Not for me though, not a fan, only played it through all the dificulties then ditched it, would get my butt kicked ^_^, hopefully more and more tournaments will start to pop up, not just for this, but for games in general.

Throw a fighter tourney (anything thats not Tekken or DOA) my way, that i can get to >.> (in the uk) and ill be there.

But that aint gonna happen anytime soon, but when i manage to get an arcade stick (really hard to get in the uk without buying expensive custom ones) i can at least play online against people.

    Game tournaments for the win.

I actually thought the controls for the Xbox version of MGS2 were pretty tight, but I've never played the PS2 version and at that time hadn't played much of the original Metal Gear Solid on Playstation. The one major difference was that when you clicked in the right-thumbstick on the Xbox controller to go into first-person view, you had to click the right-thumbstick again to get out of that view. In MGS, MGS2, and MGS3 on PS2, you just have to let go of one of the shoulder buttons to get out of that view. The change on the Xbox irked experienced players, but I actually MUCH preferred having to click to get out of first-person view because I found it to be much more comfortable for my hands and efficient for gameplay.

Each day's winners receive a Metal Gear Saga DVD or a copy of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence? . . . You need a copy of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence in order to play in the tournament. Being rewarded with something you already own? Perhaps Konami has a load of copies yet to be moved and this is Konami's way to unload the copies.
