Sony patents new gaming interface
Japanese press reports that electronics giant's new camera technology could be used for Wii-like control of games.

Japanese Web site Tech-On! is reporting on a new Sony Computer Entertainment patent for a potentially Wii-like motion-sensing interface.
The patented process would allow a game system to view a rodlike controller on a two-dimensional camera image and map its position in 3D space. The title of the patent specifically notes that the process is intended to let users control the action in a game. Technologies like this have been devised before, but they've required multiple cameras to work. In March GameSpot reported on a Microsoft patent that required two cameras.
The Tech-On! report indicates that the patent leverages the PlayStation 3's Cell processor, which it says is "optimized for image recognition."

Different technology people. Try transporting your face virtually to a game with the wii-mote. Failed? No duh, you need a camera for that. Do you even know how hard and complicated one camera deriving a 3d virtual world is? Nope? Sony wins for brains I guess.

i will not say that sony has stolen from nintendo, becuase they havent, but now they are completely ripping off nintendo, i mean u could get away with saying the ps3 controller wasnt ripping off nintendos controller, becuz at least it stayed with the psone, and ps2 controller design, but now a rod-like controller? sounds fishy to me. lol, fishy! rod! i crack my self up.

the problem with sony is that they introduce "innovation" as gimmicks like this.
will third parties bother to develop for an optional periferal that only a small percentage of the console consumers have?
will they bother to develop for it at all when they could just make a really fancy fps with the normal controller?
and what's the point of making casual-gamer content for a $600 console?
wii (and possibly 360) for me dudes!

" If your talking about the play station, it was initially developed by nintendo to add a cd based drive to the SNES, Sony just stole the idea and ran with it. However if you want to go further back the 3do and Jaguar both were CD based consoles, so anyway you want to look at it your a fool."
there's a few problems with your points:
a. The Sony Playstation was initally developed by. . . you guessed it Sony, not Nintendo. It was meant to be a cd based drive for the SNES (like you said) but Nintendo didn't want anyone else making add ons to their console, so Sony lost the legal battle and decided to make their own console.
b. The playstation was planned in 1991, and would've been released before both the Jaguar and 3DO. It's not that anyone company stole the idea from the other, it's that more than one person realized that CD's were very likely to become the next generation of media.
c. It was not the 3DO or Jaguar that made CDs (and subsequently DVD's) the standard medium for gaming. They served as reasons why not to use CDs in gaming, as both were absolute failures.
And apparently no one knows what they're talking about, because it takes YEARS to apply for a pattened. This particular patent was applied for well before nintendo had announced anything about the Wii (not even it's name or codename Revolution). Again, this is another case of brilliant people working for diffferent companies coming up with good, similar ideas.

"There is no zelda game going to ever be out on the 360, duh! the Legend of Zelda series is Nintendo ONLY!
Otherwise I got to say, Playstation sucks at life and they should just stop. I mean seriously its not a problem they are making a computer more than a gaming console, but don't copy the next-gen Nintendo system( I will not say Wii, oops, damnit). But still Playstation sucks at life, that's that. "
Way to not come off as a moron. I'm puzzled as how to "Playstation" can suck at life (are you refering to the original machine or the brand name? Regardless of which, both are inanimate, so good job on using the upper level cognative skills to differentiate between the inanimate and living). And I fail to see how a camera with a tracking capability is copying the Wiimote (which runs using spatial recognition through an entirely different method). I guess it would be a bad time to tell you this, but Microsoft as well will be using camera based motion sensing. I guess if you just read the article and didn't immediately start whining you'd know that. . .
In relation to the article, does anyone know how they are going measure the spatial movement if they can only determine two of its points (X and Y) in three dimensions?

I'm not sure if anyone's brought this up yet, but will the rod have buttons as well? If not, it will again seem as though it cannot actually do everything that the Wii controller can, and if it can work that well, i'd get the feeling that it will work on the same so-called 'gimmick' level as the eye-toy originally did. Which will add to my feelings that this peripheral will fail. Even though i don't like Sony much at all, i doubt they'd be so stupid as to leave the buttons out, but why not just let the camera detect the overall movement of the normal controller? Meh, i don't really care that much about it anyway, i know Sony didn't copy Nintendo, but i'm of the camp that believes Sony wouldn't be utilising this level of motion sensitivity if Nintendo didn't, so i guess Sony isn't a copyer, but something more like an overrated follower.

uhm, just pick the Sega Genesis, didn,t Nintendo steal the type of game port for the NES? oh wait didn,t Sega steal the game port themselves? uhhhh man ....
uhm isn't ESPN Hockey stealing from EA Sports Hockey? man it is hockey before everything! isn't Quake 1 a copy of Doom 1? isn't any Tycoon game a copy of Sim City? isn't any RTS a copy of Civilization?
it's not because you use the same idea as the opposition that you copy, or else there would be a major court problem between Burger King and McDonald's "hey they stole our invention... the hamburger!"

stop fighting for things such as preferences, everyone has it's likes and who cares if someone stole an idea? it's in the past and you can't do nothing now! I personally admit I am a nintendo fanboy (but I love my brother's PS2 and I'm planning on buying a 360 because of the zelda game) but that doesn't mean I have to insult any other company!

The best way to dominate the market is to patent everything you can so that smaller and more innovative companies can never use those ideas and nothing innovative ever happens; thus your company wins because it has better branding. Microsoft has a lot of patents under its belt itself, but (in my opinion) it always uses them very soon after getting the patent and so does Nintendo, but with Sony (in my opinion) it can take a decade. When is Sony going to use that patent that deals with an electronic device that can be roled-up and then folded-out as it becomes stiff when electricity passes through it? For Sony's sake, they better start making these products (for less than $500 and $600) and marketing the crap out of them.

Cool. I really think Sony should be busy on making deals with third party for exclusive games instead of making new gadgets.
And amazingly GS is infested with anti-ps haters lately, whenever something came up, they came up with same old lame excuses to bash PS3. (price, no rumble)

Good for Sony! Bad for me!
I'm a PS fan boy since they have launched the original PS (I think there is no shame to admit that, Sony without doubt started a new era in Video game back then). Last 11 years Sony have dominated the Video game market and still going well with its PS2 and PSP. But Monopoly in any kind of business is bad for the consumers. So presence of NGC and XBOX made sure that Sony couldn’t sell the low level crap to the consumers and vice versa fro XBOX and NGC. I personally own all the present consoles that is PS2, XBOX, Game Cube and Dreamcast (as a true gamer I don’t want to miss out some of the best games in world so I had to buy them all). Not to mention that I also have a PC. But mostly I spent more time playing games in PS2. Because without doubt Sony has the best first party and third games available (with those killer RPGs). Some time I was surprised to found that most of the third party games which are available in all the consoles played best in PS2 (I know many of you will never agree with me). This is also true that some third party games are really good in XBOX too; I’m not going to deny that. NGC and XBOX both also have some amazing Exclusive games like Zelda, Mario franchise, FF: Crystal Chronicle, MGS Twin Snakes, Resident Evil Zero, Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Forza Motorsports, Project Gotham Racing and many others. XBOX rocks for its online capabilities, to tell you the truth XBOX Live experience is amazing. You got to try it to believe it. NGC rocks for its innovative Games I got to admit that too. But still they can’t come close to what PS2 has to offer. Sony is way ahead from all of them. But this time with Wii and 360 around Sony’s reign of supremacy is bound to go down unless some kind of miracle happens. THOUGH I’M A PS FAN BOY THIS TIME I’M NOT GOING TO BUY PS3, and I believe there are lots of other people who are not going to buy PS3 either over 360 or Wii… because #1 It's Price is too high #2 It doesn’t have the Rumble function #3 Six degree of freedom thing dose not look that promising. #4 Sony Did not kept their promise about release dates, and Hardware Configuration (first they announced 2HDMI then 1 HDMI now No HDMI if they lied to the people about these things then I believe they are also lying about all these Supercomputer stuff). We all know graphics isn’t every thing in a game #5 There isn't any exclusive games for Sony anymore (they have lost GTA, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer and so on and all of them will be available in 360 with Rumble function. If I wait I believe MGS also will be available for 360 soon). #6 This time Sony is so much concerned about the Blu-Ray and its next 10/12 years royalty money over the war with HD-DVD that they forgot about millions of fans and gamers….. So there isn't a single reason I’m going to buy a PS3 unless they come up with some thing special contrilling feature like Wii. I can see the future of Sony; that it’s going down hard. if Sony goes down hard then they will learn from their mistakes like Microsoft and surely come back tough with PS4. And I think this is good for us gamers… more competition in the gaming world means more innovative games.

don't get your panties in a twist. Each major company has thousands of patents. You don't need to waste your time debating the ifs and and buts about it. Chances are if they do come out with it, it's uses probably won't be all that similar, and Nintendo has spent way more time figuring out theirs.

Heh, Bigb tells it like it is. PS3 was the most anticipated console until it was revealed. I don't know why, but that makes me laugh. Sony got comfortable in the Winner's Seat, and thought they could just start copying ideas and using them in half a**ed ways. Now they see the Winner's Seat is going to be occupied by another, so here come the last ditch efforts. Too little too late. Try again gen after next.

WILL EVERY FANBOY HERE JUST SHUT UP!!! every company here today has copied someone. The only original video game system in existance is "the brown box". franlkly we have no way of knowing who came up with the idea which i will call the "wii like interface" only because it is the best way to describe what it does ... because its the only one we've seen do what it says it is supposed to do(sorry bout the wording its the best i could come up with). so unless YOU have worked in R&D for each of the 3 mentioned companies in theyre entire history which would lead me to believe that you would know which one came up with it first CUT YOUR CRYING!!!... now i shall adress each breed of fanboy.
Sony FANS: if the accusations towards sony get to you try putting your fingers in you ears and sing loudly. By participating in this argument in which therer is no winner you are a fanboy yourself. 2.) stop being so damn insecure no matter what happens when the PS3 comes out it will still look very cool in you room as a very expensive tech toy. Sony will not go out of business even if sales suck it has to many assets (and enough people like you). 3. keep an open mind each system has its own benifites.
Nintendo fans: NINTENDO IS NOT GOD. THEY ARE NOT ALL KNOWING AND DID NOT INVENT THE PIZZA.2. nintendo is also not probable to goout of business. their first party games are the best around. their handheld own the market and they will always (especialy with the wii) at worst be the perfect second system.
(to the breed known as the nintendo haters) : GROW UP LITTLE KIDDIES!!
Microsoft fans: you shouldnt even be here ... the 360 is out and is doing great... this article has nothing to do with microsoft other than mentioning a previous article written a while back... dont let bashers get to you the camera is nothing new but it also isnt exacly special so i dont see all the fuss...where the hell is my halo.....
PC fans: why do you always bash the 360 . STOP IT.. YOUR ON THE SAME DAMN SIDE...unless you own a mac.. then its understandable bash away... if you think a pc controls better ok good ofr you ... and you can prove it to with live anyware when it comes out.
well ... i feel a lot better now....
READ A DAMN BOOK!!!

PumaPride3K: "it was initially developed by nintendo to add a cd based drive to the SNES, Sony just stole the idea and ran with it."
Umm, no. Nintendo tried to make an optical drive back in 1986, but had durability problems. They asked Sony for help, who at the time, were developing CDROM/XA along with Phillips. Sony helped Nintendo develop the "SNES-CD", and simultaneously began developing their own CD-ROM based console that would be compatible with both the Nintendo carts, and CD-ROM games. This was all in the contract that Hiroshi Yamauchi (Nintendo Pres) signed, but apparently didn't read too thoroughly, because on the day of CES, in June 1991, Nintendo canceled their contract with Sony, and and signed with Phillips, instead of announcing the SNES-CD.
Sony decided that instead of halting the "Play Station" project, they would turn it into a stand alone console of their own. The very first PlayStation was produced in October of 1991, years before Atari's Jaguar or Panasonic's 3DO ever entered the market.
That said, I'm pretty sure that Phillips CD-i was the first CD-based console on the market anyways, followed by the PlayStation (in very limited production), and the Sega CD.
On another note, Microsoft and Logitech came up with gyroscopic controlers years ago, and Sony came out with the EyeToy long before the Revolution/Wii was ever announced, so who's "really" stealing? Or are they stealing at all? Corporations copy each other all the time, and in most cases, improve on the technology they copied. This is a BENEFIT to us as consumers! If all three consoles were drastically different from each other, we could be paying a lot more than $500-600 for them because they wouldn't be in as direct competition with each other as they are now.
As for the $600 price tag. If Sony was launching an inferior console (in hardware), then you'd all have a point on the price being too high, but it's hardly inferior. Particularly when compared to the Wii...
PS - A big thank you to Wikipedia for much of the information given above. If only more people in the gaming community would use the net to better their knowledge of their hobby, rather than lash out at each other in ignorance =(

Ok the wii has sensors in the controller so it can do thing's that live around the controller the Eye toy does not.For Sony the Eye toy is an added thing you do NOT have to use a rod it can be your own hand they are just using the rod as an example.so see this has no thing to do with the wii at all and if it did the patent would have gotten turned down. Also this could also maybe not be just used for the Eye Toy Sony makes other things then the Play Station it could be used to get people involved with the TV you never know.
Plus this will help both systems because both company's will try to make each other's better so it helps the people.Last but not least the Wii is the controller the PS3 is not. What I mean by that without the Wii controller you have nothing so Nintendo will make more game's using that where as Sony only wants it for the Eye Toy and maybe not that.We do not know if it will be used for that or not.So do not get mad at Sony when this will help every one out.

Re-Post (PLEASE READ, TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS BIT OF KNOWLEDGE):
Okay, I think it is time to lay down the line. First of all, I am going to start out by saying that I am a HUGE Sony fanyboy. Sony TV's, Sony Handycam, Sony PS2, PSP, Sound Forge, VAIO, you name it. However, as a big Sony fanboy, I am also very critical of Sony's performance. I watch people like Microsoft and Nintendo, and usually laugh at their pathetic attempts to overthrow Sony as the console leader. Since the PS1, there has just been no stopping Sony. HOWEVER, what the HE** ARE THEY THINKING OVER THERE!!!! First of all, let's keep in mind that the PS3 is probably the most anticipated console of the Next-Generation, there is no doubt. However, that is among Fanboys!!!! Sony, this is to you, if you want to win the next-generation you have to move away from your fanboys, and start thinking about the average consumers. Just because 100 million people bought your lost console, does not mean it is going to happen again. Guess what, out of those 100 million people, I bet only about 5% are HUGE Sony fanboys, the rest are AVERAGE CONSUMERS!!!!!! Average Consumers WILL NOT pay $600 for a PS3, the "computer", when they can go out and buy, oh say one of your VAIO's for the SAME PRICE!!!! And guess what, the VAIO will have much more daily use than the Game Console!!!! Most consumers will not go out next holiday season and buy their kids a $600 dollar gaming console, plus $70-80 games, and the additional controllers, NO!!!! Most consumers will be economical. The fact is....why buy a $600 PS3, when you can buy BOTH THE XBOX 360 AND THE WII FOR THE SAME PRICE?!?!?!?!?! If Microsoft and Nintendo were smart, they would start saying this in public, and work together: "Sure you can go and pay $600 for a PS3....but why have just one Powerhouse console when you can have a Powerhouse console AND a Game-Oriented console for the same price?" I wonder if Sony ever thought about that? Probably not. I have a feeling it will happen too, and be certain Sony fans, while the specs may seem "much more advanced" when it comes to the PS3 to the Xbox 360, technically speaking, they both have their upsides. The PS3 has a better CPU, yes, but you had better believe Microsoft has a better GPU with ATI. You may think the PS3's online will be "better than the 360's," but can you prove that. The fact with online is that Microsoft has had 5 years of experience with it. Do you remember the beginnings of Xbox Live? Do you remember how slow it was, and how terrible live was? Now look at it, is the largest online gaming community, probably in the world. WIth barely any glitches, and you can bet that the PS3's online will be the same in the beginning. Now let us quickly look into the new HD formats. While I think Blu-Ray will win the next-generation format, I think it was completely rediculous for Sony to push Blu-Ray into the PS3. Not only does it raise the PS3's cost by $100, but also, I must ask Sony, are you really that unsure of your next-generation media that you have to push it on the kids who buy your consoles??? Can't answer that can you....anyway I had no beef against Sony up until this. This patent is a complete strike against Nintendo. Sony is always taking ideas, however, up until now, I think most of these were used only to expand technology, but this is just, in my opinion, ruthless. Sony is very unsure about the PS3, and this just tells it. Sony needs to realize that they do not have an innovative console, they have a POWERFUL console. There is no innovation, there is no motion-sensing Wii powers, no, THIS IS FOR GRAPHICAL POWER!!! THIS IS FOR ONLINE!!!! THIS IS FOR MEDIA BUFFS (which by the way I still think Microsoft has completely outbeaten Sony in media with Media Center Extender, Media Connect...and as far as Online....don't even get me started with that. WIth the new Windows Live connecting Vista Capable CPUs, Xbox 360s, and Portable Devices...that will easilly be the best online service this next generation). All in all, while I think Sony still stands a chance, I am completely ashamed to call my self Sony-Loyal. So far, I give Sony's PS3 a 3/10 for just being so poorly planned, and just so, well, un-Sony.
Let's hope TGS brings changes Sony Fanboys alike!!!! I don't want to see Sony being bought out by Microsoft at the end of this generation!!!!
R
NEW:
My Predictions for the Next-Generation-
1st Place: Nintendo Wii (The fact is, if everyone goes out an buys a 360 or a PS3, and then picks up a Wii as their second console...you had better believe that will be the industry leader. As such an innovative console, and one that took such a different approach to the next-generation of games, there is no doubt in my mind that this console will be the "console to beat" in the next-gen.)
2nd Place: Microsoft Xbox 360 (I was really stuck on this for a while, but after looking at all of the facts, I just can't help but pick the Xbox 360. The fact is it is so much more economical to buy a $400 Xbox than a $600 PS3. You could easily spend the same amount as the PS3 for a new VAIO, it is like Sony writes their own oxymorons. With such an amazing Online Service coming with the installation of Windows Live, and the fact Microsoft is working on downloading full games, movies, and music to the 360 [oh yes, they are, trust me], as well as the fact that the power difference between the 360 and PS3 are not that great, I just have a feeling the 360 will outbeat Sony this time around unless Sony makes some MAJOR changes. Also the fact there will be very few EXCLUSIVE 3rd party games this generation due to High Production Costs. Ports will be the only real way for gaming companies to gain profit on many next-gen games)
3rd Place: Sony Playstation 3 (The fact is, Sony has just made way to many mistakes, way too early. IBM is already talking about how difficult the production of Cell's can be, and the fact that many developers are saying the Cell is just not "game-friendly," how it is more suited to video and audio decoding than gaming, but this may take some time to be sure of. Also, just how many ideas has Sony stolen this generation. I mean, at least Microsoft and Nintendo are being innovative [Nintendo and the Wii-Mote, Microsoft and Xbox Live and their new OS, which by the way I believe is the most innovative OS ever designed for a console]. Sony has stolen Xbox Live, Wii concepts, and well, just about everything else. The fact is, as I have said, the PS3 is uneconomical, at least for now, and the first year of a console is crucial. The PS3's opeing year will be disgraceful, trust me on this one. You thought the 360 was bad? Just keep your eye on Sony.

Back at the Game On show,in London a couple of years back(pre Eyetoy release),I played motion sensing games involving fire in your hand, moving balls on screen and other stuff that was tech demos. The Sony patent from 1999 shows a WII like set up as a possible idea and anyone saying that Sony need MS to copy.Please.Sony had 2 consoles out before MS even tried. You can't say that things are copied when Sony release their 3rd console just because it has similarities to other console features.

But rather who impliments it BEST!!! -->for all I care all the consoles could have wii remotes or high end grapghics --but whoever does the best job of implimenting and using this tech and has the best games will ultimately win!!

Gamespot is the biggest nest of fanboys in existence... what are you guys? 14?
the hell are you talking about? if it's shaping up to be the best system then call it like it is. it's stronger than the Xbox360, now has the same motion gameplay potential as the Wii, and will have the bigger better game library out of all 3 next gen consoles. sounds like it's better on all sides. it's just fact the PS3 is shaping up to possibly be the best system out...hands down.
only thing it WON'T have is Halo, Metroid and Zelda. besides that there is literally NO OTHER REASON to choose any system over the PS3 so far.
you people argue like you hold stock in these companies or like your dad owns sony's competitor. real gamers want the best system and best games. and by the looks of it the PS3 is about to be both.
