Report: PS3s entering production

First units of Sony's next-gen console said to be delivered to the company later this month.

According to the AFX news service, Taiwan's Commercial Times is reporting the PlayStation 3 has begun production. The report says that Sony will take delivery of the first batch of 200,000 consoles by the end of the month.

In attempting to verfiy the Commercial Times report, AFX contacted Taiwan's Asustek, the firm producing the PS3, which declined to comment on the news. Asustek may be better known to American PC gamers as the motherboard manufacturer Asus. The company has a previously stated policy of not commenting on matters due to confidentiality agreements it has with clients.

According to the report, Sony expects a total of 4 million PS3s from Asustek in its "first consignment," with monthly shipments of 200,000, increasing to 2 million in October. Another company, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., is also expected to begin making PS3s for Sony soon.

Gamers worried about an Xbox 360-esque shortage of systems at the PS3 launch might find the news heartening. Earlier this month, CNN/Money's Chris Morris reported that the Xbox 360 entered production a mere 69 days before first hitting shelves. Currently the PS3 is 114 days away from its November 11 release in Japan, and 120 days from its November 17 launch in North America, Europe, and Australia.

    GOOD news for SONY... This just shows how determined they are to provide PS3 for all the consumers during the launch. I guess 4 million units is to small to feed the fanboys here in ASIA and the rest.

    NOTE: (for all SONY haters) guess what!!! SONY will never fail and thats a SAD NEWS for you all guys who keeps wishing on their failure...hahaha ... just keep wishing... only lazy people keeps bashing PS3's price.     The more Xbox fans argue, the more PS fans are gonna buy a PS3.

    Its thaaaat expensive, and if MG4 and FF13 stay as exclusive i will have to buy this.

    Gears of War will be released for PC. Yes, is gonna happen, when Vista is realesed, so still no reason to buy a 360.

    And still i have to admit that Sony is doing things wrong if Microsoft dont capitalize this chance, it means that, never is gonna be king of the consoles.

    My previous message, which was very informative, was deleted. And since the posting was not insulting to others, but rather what is happening and what will happen, I feel as though I must have hit a cord. Otherwise the message would still be there.

    I'd also like to address those of you who are saying that HDTV will reach millions upon millions more within the next 3 to 5 years. That simply is not true. DVD took over VHS, yes, but it took a while to do so. And I believe it'll take even longer this time because the leap is UNNECESSARY. But there is something that you didn't seem to understand when I first posted.

    I specifically said that most don't have HDTVs and that most don't even care about HDTV. It's completely true. Gamers will not set the standard for what kind of displays sell the most. The reason gamers can't is because the vast majority of people that will eventually buy into the HDTV scene are not even gamers. You can hope all you want because you're a Sony fanboy, and that's fine for you. But others need to understand what WILL happen, not what you WANT to happen.

    I'll give Sony recognition for its impressive PS3 system, but I cannot sit here quietly while they try and shove that overpriced system down everyones throats. I can't and neither should any of you.

    Good for Sony! Bad for me!
    I'm a PS fan boy since they have launched the original PS (I think there is no shame to admit that, Sony without doubt started a new era in Video game back then). Last 11 years Sony have dominated the Video game market and still going well with its PS2 and PSP. But Monopoly in any kind of business is bad for the consumers. So presence of NGC and XBOX made sure that Sony couldn’t sell the low level crap to the consumers and vice versa fro XBOX and NGC. I personally own all the present consoles that is PS2, XBOX, Game Cube and Dreamcast (as a true gamer I don’t want to miss out some of the best games in world so I had to buy them all). Not to mention that I also have a PC. But mostly I spent more time playing games in PS2. Because without doubt Sony has the best first party and third games available (with those killer RPGs). Some time I was surprised to found that most of the third party games which are available in all the consoles played best in PS2 (I know many of you will never agree with me). This is also true that some third party games are really good in XBOX too; I’m not going to deny that. NGC and XBOX both also have some amazing Exclusive games like Zelda, Mario franchise, FF: Crystal Chronicle, MGS Twin Snakes, Resident Evil Zero, Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Forza Motorsports, Project Gotham Racing and many others. XBOX rocks for its online capabilities, to tell you the truth XBOX Live experience is amazing. You got to try it to believe it. NGC rocks for its innovative Games I got to admit that too. But still they can’t come close to what PS2 has to offer. Sony is way ahead from all of them. But this time with Wii and 360 around Sony’s reign of supremacy is bound to go down unless some kind of miracle happens. THOUGH I’M A PS FAN BOY THIS TIME I’M NOT GOING TO BUY PS3, and I believe there are lots of other people who are not going to buy PS3 either over 360 or Wii… because #1 It's Price is too high #2 It doesn’t have the Rumble function #3 Six degree of freedom thing dose not look that promising. #4 Sony Did not kept their promise about release dates, and Hardware Configuration (first they announced 2HDMI then 1 HDMI now No HDMI if they lied to the people about these things then I believe they are also lying about all these Supercomputer stuff). We all know graphics isn’t every thing in a game #5 There isn't any exclusive games for Sony anymore (they have lost GTA, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer and so on and all of them will be available in 360 with Rumble function. If I wait I believe MGS also will be available for 360 soon). #6 This time Sony is so much concerned about the Blu-Ray and its next 10/12 years royalty money over the war with HD-DVD that they forgot about millions of fans and gamers….. So there isn't a single reason I’m going to buy a PS3. I can see the future of Sony; that it’s going down hard. if Sony goes down hard then they will learn from their mistakes like Microsoft and surely come back tough with PS4. And I think this is good for us gamers… more competition in the gaming world means more innovative games.

    Okay, I think it is time to lay down the line. First of all, I am going to start out by saying that I am a HUGE Sony fanyboy. Sony TV's, Sony Handycam, Sony PS2, PSP, Sound Forge, VAIO, you name it. However, as a big Sony fanboy, I am also very critical of Sony's performance. I watch people like Microsoft and Nintendo, and usually laugh at their pathetic attempts to overthrow Sony as the console leader. Since the PS1, there has just been no stopping Sony. HOWEVER, what the HE** ARE THEY THINKING OVER THERE!!!! First of all, let's keep in mind that the PS3 is probably the most anticipated console of the Next-Generation, there is no doubt. However, that is among Fanboys!!!! Sony, this is to you, if you want to win the next-generation you have to move away from your fanboys, and start thinking about the average consumers. Just because 100 million people bought your lost console, does not mean it is going to happen again. Guess what, out of those 100 million people, I bet only about 5% are HUGE Sony fanboys, the rest are AVERAGE CONSUMERS!!!!!! Average Consumers WILL NOT pay $600 for a PS3, the "computer", when they can go out and buy, oh say one of your VAIO's for the SAME PRICE!!!! And guess what, the VAIO will have much more daily use than the Game Console!!!! Most consumers will not go out next holiday season and buy their kids a $600 dollar gaming console, plus $70-80 games, and the additional controllers, NO!!!! Most consumers will be economical. The fact is....why buy a $600 PS3, when you can buy BOTH THE XBOX 360 AND THE WII FOR THE SAME PRICE?!?!?!?!?! If Microsoft and Nintendo were smart, they would start saying this in public, and work together: "Sure you can go and pay $600 for a PS3....but why have just one Powerhouse console when you can have a Powerhouse console AND a Game-Oriented console for the same price?" I wonder if Sony ever thought about that? Probably not. I have a feeling it will happen too, and be certain Sony fans, while the specs may seem "much more advanced" when it comes to the PS3 to the Xbox 360, technically speaking, they both have their upsides. The PS3 has a better CPU, yes, but you had better believe Microsoft has a better GPU with ATI. You may think the PS3's online will be "better than the 360's," but can you prove that. The fact with online is that Microsoft has had 5 years of experience with it. Do you remember the beginnings of Xbox Live? Do you remember how slow it was, and how terrible live was? Now look at it, is the largest online gaming community, probably in the world. WIth barely any glitches, and you can bet that the PS3's online will be the same in the beginning. Now let us quickly look into the new HD formats. While I think Blu-Ray will win the next-generation format, I think it was completely rediculous for Sony to push Blu-Ray into the PS3. Not only does it raise the PS3's cost by $100, but also, I must ask Sony, are you really that unsure of your next-generation media that you have to push it on the kids who buy your consoles??? Can't answer that can you....anyway I had no beef against Sony up until this. This patent is a complete strike against Nintendo. Sony is always taking ideas, however, up until now, I think most of these were used only to expand technology, but this is just, in my opinion, ruthless. Sony is very unsure about the PS3, and this just tells it. Sony needs to realize that they do not have an innovative console, they have a POWERFUL console. There is no innovation, there is no motion-sensing Wii powers, no, THIS IS FOR GRAPHICAL POWER!!! THIS IS FOR ONLINE!!!! THIS IS FOR MEDIA BUFFS (which by the way I still think Microsoft has completely outbeaten Sony in media with Media Center Extender, Media Connect...and as far as Online....don't even get me started with that. WIth the new Windows Live connecting Vista Capable CPUs, Xbox 360s, and Portable Devices...that will easilly be the best online service this next generation). All in all, while I think Sony still stands a chance, I am completely ashamed to call my self Sony-Loyal. So far, I give Sony's PS3 a 3/10 for just being so poorly planned, and just so, well, un-Sony.

    Let's hope TGS brings changes Sony Fanboys alike!!!! I don't want to see Sony being bought out by Microsoft at the end of this generation!!!!

    My Predictions for the Next-Generation-

    1st Place: Nintendo Wii (The fact is, if everyone goes out an buys a 360 or a PS3, and then picks up a Wii as their second console...you had better believe that will be the industry leader. As such an innovative console, and one that took such a different approach to the next-generation of games, there is no doubt in my mind that this console will be the "console to beat" in the next-gen.)

    2nd Place: Microsoft Xbox 360 (I was really stuck on this for a while, but after looking at all of the facts, I just can't help but pick the Xbox 360. The fact is it is so much more economical to buy a $400 Xbox than a $600 PS3. You could easily spend the same amount as the PS3 for a new VAIO, it is like Sony writes their own oxymorons. With such an amazing Online Service coming with the installation of Windows Live, and the fact Microsoft is working on downloading full games, movies, and music to the 360 [oh yes, they are, trust me], as well as the fact that the power difference between the 360 and PS3 are not that great, I just have a feeling the 360 will outbeat Sony this time around unless Sony makes some MAJOR changes. Also the fact there will be very few EXCLUSIVE 3rd party games this generation due to High Production Costs. Ports will be the only real way for gaming companies to gain profit on many next-gen games)

    3rd Place: Sony Playstation 3 (The fact is, Sony has just made way to many mistakes, way too early. IBM is already talking about how difficult the production of Cell's can be, and the fact that many developers are saying the Cell is just not "game-friendly," how it is more suited to video and audio decoding than gaming, but this may take some time to be sure of. Also, just how many ideas has Sony stolen this generation. I mean, at least Microsoft and Nintendo are being innovative [Nintendo and the Wii-Mote, Microsoft and Xbox Live and their new OS, which by the way I believe is the most innovative OS ever designed for a console]. Sony has stolen Xbox Live, Wii concepts, and well, just about everything else. The fact is, as I have said, the PS3 is uneconomical, at least for now, and the first year of a console is crucial. The PS3's opeing year will be disgraceful, trust me on this one. You thought the 360 was bad? Just keep your eye on Sony.

    AS more they produce, the better(for us)...
    since if a lot of PS3s stay at the shelves, they're gonna have to cut down the price or the PS#s will be stuck there for ever...
    so, after sme time, if there's a lot of PS3s on the market it's price will drop...
    anyways...
    if it's true that they've started production, means the system is already done...
    and from now on they'll just try to find a way to make it cheaper to produce...
    they may not take down the price at launch, but after some time it'll surely be cheap enogh to give microsoft a tough oponent

    The 360 had problem and they didn't have the Blu-Ray or The Cell Process to deal with so. Sony will have production delays most likely.

    Maybe start over a 100 days before launch is good. But there still have delays. Nobody has massively produced Blu-Ray players or HD-DVD yet. Sony a has to deal with Blu-Ray and also The Cell Process at once. That an hard goal. 2 million unit by the launch date is pretty hard, and who will pay the $600 dollar prices tags. And there say another 2 million by the end of the year which will make 4 million units out there on store shelves. If anything I think will see tons of PS3 sitting on store shelves. Because not many people want to pay that $600+ prices tag for it.

    I'd hope Asuktek would be ready for production by now. They have the easy part of assembling the boxes. The tough part will be supplying Asuktek with enough components to assemble. The shortage of 360s was ironically caused by a shortage of very generic RAM chips. The custom CPU and GPU were the big concerns, but it ended up being the RAM that was the production bottleneck. With the PS3, they have to worry about the Cell (which we know is having extremely ow yields), the GPU (which is an untested part from "Never gets it right on the first rev" Nvidia), the Blu-ray pickup head (which are in extremely short supply), TWO different types of RAM chips, and possibly a new partial PS2 chipset (because Sony f'd up their emulation software). A shortage in any one of those components will lead to a shortage in PS3s. Preorder now or get in line on Ebay.

    Until I hold a PS3 controller in my own hands, place a game in the machine and control the character on the screen. I have no opinion everything is speculation. I also will NOT pay $600 for the console. Blue-ray is still a To-be-determined form of media that may or may not have a future. So im sure that within 2 years time i will have a decent amount of (hopefully high quality games) and the biggest of all a nice price drop, we will know the fate of BD (will is be the next DVD or the next BetaMax) Only time will tell. Until then I will play my Xbox360 which I didnt not purchase or pre-order until 6 months after its release. Purchase of first release of system is NEVER a good idea IMO. Wait for the bugs to be worked out.

    I seriously don't understand why the majority of people won't consider getting the $500 instead of the $600.
    Unless you have a HDTV with hdmi, wireless networking and an extensive collection of media cards, then there should be no reason to get the $600 version.

    You should get the $500 version and upgrade what you need so basically it will do everything the $600 one could do except cheaper.

    E.g Boy "A" has the current setup at his house: Standard Definition T.V and wireless networking. It would be cheaper for him to get the $500 PS3 and wireless usb attachment then getting a $600 PS3.

    Boy "B" has the current setup at his house: HDTV(in this case it wouldn't matter if it was hdmi enabled) and wired networking. It would be cheaper for him to get a $500 ps3 and 1080p-component cables than getting the $600 ps3.

    UltraWoody, you stated that barely anyone has HDTV, yet don't you realize that more and more people get one and that in 5 years, about everyone will have at least one in their house? 5 years ago, people were saying that DVD was expensive while most movies were still on VHS. Who doesn't own a DVD player today? The only thing it offers more than VHS is quality! People CARE about quality, that's a proof enough.

    This is good news for early adopters. I have always tended not to go for consoles at launch because first generations are usually...well....uneasy. They could work fine or go completely the other way. Plus, when I am dropping £425 on one of them, I want it to work perfectly. I will just wait for a while, maybe till MGS4...

    Two reasons why there won't be a shortage of PS3s on store shelves:
    1). They got a head start on production. They should be able to meet the demand.
    2). No one is going to buy it for $600 with no good games out there to play.

    Since Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII are exclusive to ps3 that alone makes me definitly want to get it...but when? well the price is so high so i have no reason to get it at launch with that price but i definitly want to get it before those games come out. Basically. what Im saying is even with PS3s high price its not doomed if it can keep up with the great exclusives it'll be doing just fine.

    Everything is going to be outsold by the PS2 for a while (maybe another year or two?). It has the best/widest selection of games, is very affordable, and has new games and accessories to meet any budget (it gets even better once you start looking at used stuff). Very seriously, it's the only system I can hands down recommend this holiday season to any casual gamer. If they ask about the 360, Wii or PS3, I'll just suggest they wait until there are more games out, prices go down, whatever. It's nice having the new, hot system, but for most people its waaay too early to pick a next-gen system. And quite frankly, most gamers (like the people here) will have decided what they're interested in already, so they're not going to ask

    Fijidawg--So don't give me this crap about how cheap a 360 is. the $300 is worthless considering they push HD Gaming and it doesn't even have component cables, a hard drive, or a wireless controller. Then charging $100 for a wireless adapter. It's marketing people, and your feeding right into it.

    So you are saying that people should be forced into buying components they do not need (such as the blu-ray) I think it's great that Microsoft offers 2 different versions of the 360, and at least the core system can actually be UPGRADED. Yeah it's worthless all right, it can't do anything that the loaded system can after upgrades /sarcasm. Th PS3 "core" as it were, does not have memory card slots and does not have HDMI outputs. Can you upgrade that later? Please think about what you're saying before you bash another company's system for no reason. PS3 will fail because Sony is putting everything they have behind blu-ray, and there's no guarantee it will even fly. Spend your $600 on the piece of crap if you want, just know its a fool's errand at launch.

    While I do believe the PS3 to be expensive, it really is not that bad for what it is giving you. While history counts, you can't bash a system because the company has made things (minidisc) that did not take off. Has everything Microsoft's made been a huge hit? I don't think so. I picked up a 360 recently myself, and I was already at $550 just to get the system running with a wireless adapter and no game! So how do you bash a $600 system that has wireless, a blu ray player, and a 60 gig hard drive? You can't!!!!! While each system has it's advantages, it all depends ont he games. Each one has their killer apps, and each person will like one system over the other for whatever their reason. So don't give me this crap about how cheap a 360 is. the $300 is worthless considering they push HD Gaming and it doesn't even have component cables, a hard drive, or a wireless controller. Then charging $100 for a wireless adapter. It's marketing people, and your feeding right into it.

    In Sony's favor (and if you've been keeping track of my posts then you'd know I've been reserved concerning the PS3), they are trying to do a lot of things *right*

    1) They're partnering with Asus. Dirk13; I'd be willing to be Asus's position in the computer industry is *why* they got the contract.

    2) Giving themselves more time to produce units (nearly a month and a half more than Microsoft did) to help meet demand (and probably to accomodate part-yield issues)

    3) Trying to have better backwards compatibility than the 360 (hope it works out).

    Not saying the launch will be perfect, not saying it'll be a flop. But as much flack as Sony has been getting (some deserved, some not), I don't think they've completely lost their senses. This launch is going to be very important to them - they actually have two viable competitors this go round; they're not only launching the PS3 itself, but this is a major event for the Blu-Ray format as well; and if the PS3 does well and impresses a lot of people, Sony will have an opportunity to promote their own HDTV's and home theater equipment as well.

    They've got a lot riding on this launch and they won't have it easy like they did last time (which is good for everybody - we all benefit from the competition). I really and sincerely hope it goes well for them, even though I don't think they're going to be as dominant this generation as they were with the PS2.

    Well, this is good news for Sony. I wonder if they overcame the rumored difficulties with the Cell processor and Blu-ray (though this news most likely means that those rumors were bogus anyway). Now they just need to announce the price of PS3 games to scare away the other half of their market.

    Considering the PS3 shown at E3 was a "watered down" version of what they originally planned to deliver and its still over priced for its entry into what will be a super competitive marketplace by November - I think they will struggle.

    No dual shock controller

    Less ports

    A new media format (blueray) yet to be proven let alone fully adopted

    Lets not forget it was Sony who created the entirely unsuccessful Minidisc media format. If you wish to risk your hard earned on a possible flop as far as media support goes sure buy a PS3.

    Given that blueray discs will also be very expensive per unit I also doubt the games will even be able to compete on price with the Wii and 360.

    And you would hope that all that extra space on the blueray disc is being used entirely for more content vs developers being sloppy and less efficient.
