Confirmed: No Quake Wars in 2006

Activision confirms the latest Enemy Territory game has slipped from this year's schedule; will be ready "when it's done."
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
Posted Jul 12, 2006 2:13 pm PT

At E3 2005, visitors to the Activision booth were treated to the first trailer for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. For just over a minute and a half, viewers were treated to the PC game's arsenal of sci-fi shooter action, which will pit humanity against an invading army of Strogg cyborgs in Battlefield-style multiplayer combat. Following a series of explosions, the trailer (viewable below) pronounced that "the invasion begins 2006."

No Quake Wars in '06

"Hold your fire! We won't be ready until we're done."
Watch | Download
This year at E3, the playable Quake Wars demos at the Activision booth had gamers lining up to get their frag on. The footage on display was so impressive, it earned the title a nomination for the "Best PC Game" prize from the Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2006.

Given the hype, it is likely that many PC gamers had Quake Wars on their shopping list for the 2006 holiday season. Unfortunately, they can now scratch it off. In the wake of a flurry of Web reports prompted by a GameSpy developer interview, Activision has confirmed the game will not be arriving this year.

"It has slipped from the 2006 schedule," a rep told GameSpot; "the official release date now is 'When it's done.'"

Maybe they decided to do something which DICE and EA don't seem to be able to do. Release a game that is "actually finished" (don't forget Battlefield 2 is still being patched up and never really felt finished to me). If they could release Quake Wars with very few bugs it would win me over never to touch the Battlefield series again.

quake wars should have been released along with bf 2142, i wanted to see which one would be better. i can wait as long as they release a bug free, well tweaked game.

Believe me, many people will but BF2142 and its add-ons. But this is reasonalbe, Activision gives us Call Of Duty 3 in 2006 while misses Quake Wars till 2007 but EA gives BF2142 on 2006 and misses Medal Of Honor :Airbourne.

i think this game is better than BF2142 because BF2142 looks like 'C&C Renegades 2'.

"MariusSE
This means LOADS of money for EA and BF2142."

Only if people are stupid and buy sequel after sequel without any support.

But you are probably right. People never learn.

maybe..i think this game would be for windows vista and directx 10
(fortunately, if activision releases ET:QW in q4 2006, i wouldn't play it because i don't have money and my laptop is too bad to play.)
i think their decision is good because when i watched the gameplay movie, there were some problems.(for instance, throwing health-pack was too strange)
strongly believe that this game would be better than now when they release this game. i hope so.
i really wanna play this game : )

Awww, that's cute, Activision thinks a game needs to be done to sell it in stores.

not that i really mind, but it is quite irratating and funny at the same time seeing all these responses to the delay. I think everyone has by now seen a lot of delays over the years for their highly anticipated games. I find this game very interesting and attractive as well, but I'm quite used to seeing delays already. id software is so smart at doing this, always recycling the quote for almost all their games.

I am so godamn sick and tired of this "When It's Done Crap." They did that with Duke Nukem and look where that game is. I mean it's not even like this game was using a revolutionary new graphics or gameplay engine. Pathetic

People use my icon? I made this icon and so far am the only one who uses it.

Besides the 360 only has 512mb system memory which is shared by both the CPU and GPU. Imagine the 360 trying to run this game with 32 players online, I highly doubt it. More and more PC games are now requiring an insane amount of RAM. I myself have 2 gigs, and games perform top notch on my PC. I guess it does depend on the developers to optimize this game for the consoles. Most likely this game will be brought to consoles but will be stripped down alot.

Hey Chubbums, thanks for proving my theory about people who use your icon here.

There's no reason 360 can't run all of these next-gen PC games. It's a bit more powerful than my PC and has no Windows overhead. The fault lies entirely in lazy developers who don't bother optimizing x86 software to run on all 3 cores of the 360's PPC. DX10 games might be a different story, but I have faith. PS3 will have the same problem of being even more powerful than the PC it's competing with, but even harder to program for. Sometimes I wish everything used the same architecure (but not manufcturer, of course).

This run on 360? HA HA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH BWAHAHAHAHA *cough* hahahahaha omfg WTF HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Well if anything consoles would be getting something like a "modern combat" version like what they got with BF2.

I wonder what all these tools will say when the PS3 starts using the Unreal Engine 3 for all their games. You guys who are frothing at the mouth looking at Gears of War videos and pictures do realize it looks that good simply because of the engine. When Unreal 2k7 comes out for the PS3 people are still gonna claim the 360 has better graphics when its clearly using the same engine and made by Epic as well.

Are we going to need some crazy specs machine? will it be Vista friendly and not XP firendly? Maybe the delay has something to do with these things.

I know dude, ET is great. Played it for 4-5 months non-stop. My post said nothing of the games; just the name. 'Quake Wars' should be the dominant name in the title.

I can't wait to play this new Quake game on the Xbox 360. Lets just make sure that the Frame-rate stays at a steady 60 this time!

I realize that first generation development kits for the Xbox 360 only allowed developers to have access to only ONE thread on ONE of the three CPU cores--which meant that developers only had access to about one-sixth of the Xbox 360 General Purpose CPU power--so that means we should absolutely see a steady framerate of 60 frames per second with full screen anti aliasing this time!

Oh, by the way, the Restance Fall of Man on the PS3 has NOTHING to do with the delay of this awesome Quake game! In fact, when you consider that the official Playstation Magazine this month compares Gears of War on the Xbox 360 to Resistance Fall of Man on the PS3, and then the Playstation Magazine says, "One thing is clear: When the Playstation 3 launches, it will NOT have the best graphics, because of second generation Xbox 360 games like Gears of War!" That is a pretty good indicator that Resistance Fall of Man is the one that has a LOT to fear from the likes of Gears of War and Call of Duty 3!

Runstalker: Apperently you (like many of the people here) didnt play Enemy territory, the MOFIN free sequel (sort of) to RTC Wolfenstein, Which both had (have... i still play them actually) amazing online play, hands down they get my vote for best online FPS's... which is better is a tough choice. There trying to show that this is made by those people, and it will be similar to those games, set in the Quake universe, rather than be more like past Quake games (meh), there trying to get costumers from both franchises while. If anything, the ET part is what shows the quality of the game coming, and they could drop all this Quake crap for all i care.

Anyway.. if you havent played Enemy Territory, go download it, right now, its free .. its like 200 mb, and its a blast... stlil thousands online at any given time and its like 4 years old... its very very good.
