Project Sylpheed draws near

Square Enix and Game Arts open Web site to promote pedigreed space combat title for the 360.

Game Arts' shoot-em-up Silpheed first appeared in 1986. It was later ported to a variety of systems, including a remake for the Sega CD in 1993. The game received another makeover on the PlayStation 2 in 2000 but hasn't been seen since.

That will change soon, as earlier this week, the official Project Sylpheed Web site went live, providing visitors with details on the upcoming Xbox 360 version of the game.

It's not just the spelling of the series' name that has been tweaked; the game's visuals have been again overhauled. And while details of the game mechanics have yet to be posted, the images shown on the site suggest the action will be fully 3D.

A brief synopsis of the game also confirmed that the weapon customization feature that distinguished the previous Silpheed games will be retained, this time offering the player more than 50 different weapons to choose from.

The game's genre is listed as "cinematic shooting," and the Web site states that in addition to loads of action, the game will contain "drama worthy of a Square Enix game."

While an exact launch date has yet to be announced, Project Sylpheed will be released before the end of the year, according to the site.

The first Silpheed was revolutionary back when high-end 3D graphics of the day looked like real-time N64 and took days to render. The second one was more about real-time mixed with the nostalgia of the original. The only way this game can be good is if the whole game has the ferocity of the first level of Starfox Assault. Something akin to the first minutes of SW Ep. III, and look just as good.

Pretty cool. If this is exclusive to the Xbox360, maybe the Xbox360 console isnt as dead in Japan as it currently is.

It's nice to finally see Square step outside its comfort zone and make a game that doesn't tack on the "Final Fantasy" name.

The original Silpheed was written by the same guys that made Thexder. Now there is a game that I'd like to see recreated for today's next generation consoles!

I hope Square Enix takes there time on this game if it sells well they will bring many more Square Enix games to the 360 but most likely not FF but still any game that comes from Square Enix will be a great add and I can't wait to see it.Plus Blue Dragon is like a Square Enix game because the guy who worked with Square Enix left to work with his own new studio so if both games sell we will see many more great Japan games come out and help sell the 360 and that will be cool.

I had the original Pc version of this game way back in the 80's. It was a follow up to THEXDER, another great side scrolling shooter published by Sierra. This game will be cool.

I'm glad that SE is supporting the 360, but I'd like a little RPG love as well. I have Silpheed for the PS2, and it's pretty good, but SE can do better than a 3D shooter for the 360.

The graphics in Slipheed for the PS2 are mindblowing. Something like that comming out at any system's launch is very rare. And now they're releasing a new one for the 360? It will be a year after the launch, but there's no telling how good this one will look!

Square Enix and 360 in the same sentence?? Wow, I never thought I'd see that happen again after FFXI. I guess I was wrong. I would love to see more Squeenix stuff on the 360. Let's hope they do a better job at this than they did with the FFXI installation process, but I have my hopes really low just to avoid disappointment.
