US console sales charts: June 11-17

DS titles take up half of Bestbuy.com bestseller chart; Hitman, GTA, GRAW, and FIFA split the rest.

On June 6, Take-Two Interactive retook the charts when its subsidiary Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PlayStation 2. However, unlike other GTA games, sales of the world's first PSP-to-PS2 port quickly dropped, according to the latest sales rankings from Bestbuy.com.

According to the retailer's top-10 list for the week of June 11 to 17, GTA: LCS slipped to number nine just one week after hitting the market. Which game succeeded it? It should come as little surprise that New Super Mario Bros. retook the top slot, leading a charge of five titles for the Nintendo DS. Right behind was Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day and Big Brain Academy. Inexplicably, they were followed by Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (fourth), which was originally released last August. Back in seventh was another resurgent title for the dual-screen handheld, Mario Kart DS.

Other than Liberty City Stories, the only other PS2 game on the charts was EA Sports' 2006 FIFA World Cup. Both it and its Xbox sibling road the wave of enthusiasm for the ongoing quadrennial sporting event, landing in fifth and 10th place, respectively. The remaining two slots--Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (sixth) and Hitman: Blood Money (eighth)--belonged to the Xbox's successor, the Xbox 360.

LionsGate, i've heard it from many people. They buy the PSP to watch movies.

I thought Castlevania was rare, did they re-release it or something, if so thats great, I need to go out and get it.

As far as I know the PSP is outselling the DS slightly in the US, but very rarely does a PSP game end up in even the top 20. It is obvious to me why people are buying the PSP. For 1 or 2 games, mp3, and those incredibly stupid UMDs. That isn't saying the PSP has bad games, just that people are not buying them. Whoever says that these DS games are in the top 10 because of the Lite is wrong. DS game sales have been making up a large portion of the top 10 for a while now. Castlevania is the only game there that might not have been there without the Lite. With all of the 3rd parties supporting the Wii I think it is obvious that the Wii will be very profitable for Nintendo just as the DS is.

Hahaha, was there really an indication that a PSP port to PS2 would be able to hold the #1 slot any longer than the day it came out? Of course not.

It's true that this is the best buy's sales ranking BUT much like polls and surveys, you get an idea of trends and the big picture by looking at a small but reasonable sampling.

Nintendo selling more games on the DS has no affect on the Wii's success. Its a different audience and people like different games on each. Nintendo has always been the best in the handheld market.

Wow, im amazed that posters arent seeing the "Rankings based on Bestbuy.com" sign at the bottom of the chart. This is ridiculous Gamespot. Even if theirs 5000 Best Buys across the nation that still would account for less than 10% (maybe even less than 5%) of all game retailers, so how can you say that this is a true US console sales chart?

People dont bother with these stupid charts. Their not really indicative of actual sales. One chain store does not represent all game sales. Wait for or go look for NPD #'s.

I thought the Brain Age game only took a week or two from what Iwata said?

A news report on the DS said Nintendo made four million dollars on it from it's first month on sale. Don't know how they got that figure though.

Btw apparently Bestbuy.com and Gamespot and Ebgames make up most of the game sales in the US. Game sale data in the US isn't that accurate compared to Japan where it is a religious custom.

I'm not sure how official these figures are but Everything and Nothing has the million sellers in of the DS and PSP.

I can understand it. After I got my DS lite and my copy of Big Brain Academy I went back to get another Mario Kart DS so my wife could play multiplayer on the original DS while I played on the DS lite. Gamestop had no new copies of the game, so I ended up buying a used one. I was surprised that Gamestop didn't have any new copies of Mario Kart DS, but I guess they are selling out everywhere. Go Nintendo.

I am definately a Nintendo fan!!!!

  • burtlo

This would seem likely because of the recent launch of the DS Lite. Most consumers out about dropping the cash on the new system would most likely get a new game.

It would definitely explain why I found Best Buy picked dry when I went in to the store.

    "psinex
Don't forget that DS games are going for 30 bucks, half the price of next gen console games. That means Nintendo has to sell twice as many DS games to equal that of a next gen title. So if Oblivion sells 300,000 and Mario sells 600,000, they've made the same amount of money."

No They wouldn't. It would mean that Mario made twice that much money since the cost of making oblivion is infinitely higher than the cost of making Mario.

Not to mention that DS titles are prices are more than half the 360 titles...

Anyways not a big fan of that... but that's the way things are. DS is kicking butt....

What gets me is the fact that there are only 2 Xbox 360 games on here. I thought it was "THE" big thing. I can't wait until November, when PS3 and Wii take the charts by storm. Oh, and th DS is definitely showing it's muscle on the charts. Go big N!

Nintendo Strikes Back Episode IV. Honestly, I'm not suprised. Nintendo has always had a monopoly on handhelds. I was excited when the PSP came out. That maybe Sony could put up some compition. Well, they did. BUT, nintendo knows what they're doing. I can't wait for Wii.

psinex wrong it takes more money to develope the 360 games therefore they charge 60 dollars while a ds game is the cheapest to develope of the 6 (360 xbox gc gba psp and ps2 ) so there fore if nintendo sold 600,000 copies they get more money back then 360 does or any console manufacture for that matter as the others dont even get profits remember they have to get back the money they spent developing licensing and shipping the game out which dont take 300,000 to do

Brain Age is the game I fill my DS-time with after I've beaten my other games. It never really has a stopping point, so you don't stop playing the game when you've beaten the last boss.

DS games are the cheapest to make. Brain Age cost $300K and 4 months to make, while Oblivion took millions of dollars and years to produce.

Cheaper Games = More Fun. Winner (and still champine,) Nintendo.
