PS3 bundle-palooza opens with $1,000-plus pack

European retailer Play.com lists 60GB PlayStation 3 with three games for 549 pounds ($1,016).

In the completely unsurprising department, the first PlayStation 3 bundle from an online retailer has hit the Net, and it's expensive. Gamers who thought the initial Xbox 360 bundles were pricey at a minimum of $600 should sit down before reading the next sentence. Play.com is selling the PlayStation 3 with the 60GB hard drive and three games for 549 pounds, roughly $1,016. The three games included are Warhawk, Formula One 06, and SingStar--perfect for gamers who like air combat, driving, and karaoke games.

Of course the PlayStation 3, like most gaming products, will be more expensive across the pond relative to the US market. The 60GB PS3 was announced to launch in Europe for 599 euros or 425 pounds, which is the American equivalent of $758 and $799, respectively.

Assuming the previously reported 425-pound price point is to remain true in the UK, it would mean that Play.com would be selling the three games for 124 pounds ($230), or just over 41 pounds per game (just over $76). The early bird also won't necessarily get the worm--Play.com does not guarantee delivery of the bundles before Christmas.

Sticker shock isn't likely to be done yet. Gamers may remember the ridiculous $4,499 Xbox 360 bundles that were released, which included a 42-inch plasma screen television. Bundles are the perfect way for retailers to make some extra cash with high-demand items, and it's likely that online retailers will have similar ideas for both the PS3 and Nintendo's Wii.

And American shoppers should remember, this is all before tax and shipping charges.

    I've pre-ordered from play but I'm not sure what number I am in the waiting line. I pre-ordered in August so fingers crossed for getting it on the March release date.

    That's just crazy. I can buy a new PC with that money rather than a first generation PS3 that I'm willing to bet will have some form of hardware issue that will be ironed out in later versions. Just too pricey for my taste.

    the ps3 is expensive but the bundles not too bad.
    the games cost around 41 pounds each,
    but 360 games cost between 40 and 50 pounds each. considering ps3 games are on an entirely new format i think the games are much more reasonably priced that microsoft's

    lets just say you want 10 movies...

    $5,500 + $1,000 to $1,500 + (($50+)x 10) = $7,000 to $7,500

    Personally, even if I had that kind of money, I wouldn't spend 7+ grand just so i could count all the hairs on some old guy's mustache...

    Yes i'm buying the Wii, but I am not going to start saying how great it is in comparison. Nintendo already stated that they are not going to participate in this war so I wont bring them into it. But you should all know that the PS3 really is the P$3.

    BTW, anyone remember the sony beta?

    um... dudes... keep in mind that the prices quotes are with VAT included. The Brits add their VAT to the regular price of an item, so if you want to compare actual prices, you need to compare our prices WITH tax added.

    I think it is a really good bundle pack, but the price is WAY to high for me, a $600 PS3 is about the limit I will pay for a console.

    A 360 costs 275 pounds in Britain, a 360 costs 400 dollars in America. When we convert 275 we get 509.2175 U.S. dollars. Thats an increase of 109.2175. You can't simply just convert the prices.

    That was the first time I heard about Mass Effect. I don't care if it comes to the PS3 personally, I would prefer to get MGS and Killzone. Im sure there will be plenty of RPG's appearing on both consoles so don't worry about PS3 RPG fans. I suppose they'll have to settle with Final Fantasy. Why are you here talking about the PS3's price anyway. Shouldn't you be playing your 360, I know if I had a PS3 I would be playing it right now instead of talking to a 360 fan.

    I haven't spent that much on my 360 yet. I got a launch bundle and I now have 7 games. This makes me feel especially bad for the Sony early adopters, considering Sony's track record with new optical media drives, this means they'll be spending another 500 or so in a year after that. Better get your class action lawsuit together earlier this time.

I hope it comes to PS3 as well ´cause in my humble opinion, this game is reason enough to get a 360 just as much as MGS4 is reason enough to get a PS3 even though I´d personally rather pick Mass Effect over MGS4 regardless of platform.Tell your friend with the 360 that he should get Mass Effect when it comes out so you can play a little.

"Gran Turismo: Lost my interest" lost YOUR interest I didn't realise the entire gaming market relies on you, GT also sells really well. "Tekken: GARBAGE PERIOD" once again thats YOUR opinion, people still buy it. DMC sells really well in Japan, in fact all of the above games do.

    - What do you know? The £279.99 I spent on my Xbox 360 has been worth every penny; and if you shop aound, you don't have to pay £49.99 for the games - I got NFS:MS for £39.99 from Argos.

    Considering - unless your a fanboy - the relative lack of difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3, I think the extra cost is certainly not "worth it" - especially if the only exclusive titles are those such as Gran Turismo (VS. Project Gotham), Resistance: Fall of Man (VS. Halo 3) and Final Fantasy (VS. Mass Effect) but to name a few.

    I'm certainly no fan boy - I have ALL the consoles - but what you said smells of ignorance.

    another i say
    £100 for the 60gb hd
    £130 fr the hdvd player
    £15 for the re charge cable
    and another £60 for the wifi conextion
    which adds up to £584 soa ps3 for £425 is a good price

    I almost forgot to mention the Wii as well...which has full access to ALL Nintendo libraries, Sega Genesis libraries, AND Turbo Duo libraries! Along with guaranteed support by SNK, and everyone else that Sony is too snobbish to accept. Their system is even LESS than the 360, and still provides just as much fun!

    If I ever was a fanboy of any system, it would've been the Dreamcast, may it rest in peace. But now with this console war, my money's going to Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony can choke on their own filth for all I care now.

    I've been a gamer for the past 20 years now, all right? I started with an Atari 2600. I'll bet I've got more experiene with GOOD games, than you EVER hoped to have!

    Metal Gear: Excellent series. Yes, I agree with you there.
    Final Fantasy: Went to the dogs when VII came out. FF 6 and Tactics WERE THE LAST GOOD FINAL FANTASIES.

    Gran Turismo: Lost my interest after 2. Project Gotham Racing more than replaced it. And with Forza Motorsport, and Forza 2, I've all but forgotten about GT.

    Killzone: Garbage compared to Halo.

    Tekken: GARBAGE PERIOD. Even more broken than MvC 2, if that's even possible.

    Devil May Cry: Not a bad series. Missed BADLY with DMC 2, but I agree with the other guy that Ninja Gaiden was much better than the DMC series, and a hell of a lot more challenging.

    What I will give PS2 is the upcoming RPG Valkyrie Profile 2. That will be a divine RPG, indeed. Star Ocean 3 severly disappointed me, much to my dismay.

    Now, for the Xbox/360

    Call of Duty 2, Project Gotham 3, Forza 2, Dead or Alive 4, Halo 3 (upcoming), Neo Geo Battle Colosseum, King of Fighters XI (confirmed to be released on the 360), Xbox Live Arcade.

    Need I say more? BTW, Sony had a stick up it's ass against 2D for quite some time now. Also, if you compare 2D games for the PS2 with the Xbox, or even the Dreamcast...it looks HORRID. Sony wouldn't even bring the Metal Slug series to their system, but Xbox would?!?

    I could care less about what the PS3 has to offer! The only thing that interests me is Metal Gear 4...and again, it is NOT enough for me to buy the system JUST FOR ONE GAME.

    At least have some decent taste in games, for crying out loud...

    we are talking about europe here people not the USA, things in europe cost alot more its not just the games, i love it how the xbox fanboys come here and justify a $1000 plus package by saying oh get a wii60 istead and 10 games, im sorry but not everyone needs like 3 or 4 consoles sitting on the floor or wherever, having a tangled cords, i skipped the 360, im sorry but im not spending $499 on halo3 and gears of war, ( comes out to more when you add the prices of those two games ) now i do plan on getting a wii, but thats only going to be my secondary console, meaning i wont be coming home from work 3 or 4 days a week playing the wii, that machine will get played the least when i have my ps3, and another funny thing is at my local game spot no one has put $50 for the wii list ( basically you give them money and they call you once price and launch is announced and you dont have to come in to reserve, ) but 20 people have for the ps3, what does this tell the nintendo and MS fans, #1 the wii does not excite many average people, #2 the ps3 will once again be the top choice when it comes to console gaming, #3 not everyone is crazy about halo, im sorry but halo is way over rated, i have more fun playing SOCOM, in fact i feel is 10 times better than Halo, gears of war, looks nice, but no thanks im not spending $499 for one game

    wait.... what........ Doogle177 you think halo is to bright and colorful (plz learn to spell colorful by the way). That was a really dumb statement. i think halo was a normal shooter, yes....but it was well executed with high quality and has good gameplay. halo2 added arguably the best multiplayer to hit the market in a real long time and halo 3 has a lot to top but i think its possible.
    Also killzone sucked in my opinion and is a halo clone. Finally the last footage we saw of killzone 2 was obviously a cutscene and was fake
