First Lara Croft game gets a face-lift

Eidos has Crystal Dynamics working on a 10th Anniversary Edition of Tomb Raider for PS2, PSP, PC.

In its first decade, Eidos' Tomb Raider franchise became a surprise hit, a system-selling franchise, a pair of big-budget Hollywood movies, an interactive punch line, and a surprise hit once again. The publisher today announced that it will commemorate that run with a 10th Anniversary Edition of the original Tomb Raider for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PC.

Calling it a "new game," Eidos said it tapped Crystal Dynamics to develop the 10th Anniversary Edition. After original Tomb Raider developer Core Design's poorly received Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, Eidos handed the series to Crystal Dynamics, which created this year's successful Tomb Raider: Legend. While Eidos has retained the Core Design name, it has since sold off the physical studio and its assets to UK-based Rebellion.

Eidos didn't announce much in the way of details for the 10th Anniversary Edition, but the publisher's head of brand management Larry Sparks said it is "a one-off title" that would appeal to existing Tomb Raider fans, as well as attract new ones. There is no release date or pricing information for the project as of yet.

Umm wheres the "Next Gen" love?
I really loved this game on my 360... but seriously i was expecting the 10th anniversary on my 360, since we got Lara Croft on all systems last year.

The only way im getting this game will be for my 360. The graphics on the PS2 looks low res...

They have to bring this to all next gen systems, it would sell tons!

Remakes are Great according to the press, but making a new game that plays like an old game or the last game is the kiss of death according to reviewers. People want more of the same. Look at Zelda, I've played the same game 9 times. All they did was change the title. I loved every minute listening to the same music, making the same moves against the same bosses. Now Tomb raider was changing all the time, and the only game worth playing in the series was Tomb Raider 2. Legend was great, because it was more Kain than Laura. I don't see legend as part of the series. Its so far and above the other. I've bought every game that Crystal Dynamics ever made since "Kain" on the snes. They've never disappointed me. They make games that are fun. If they can make that first tomb raider fun, good luck, its gonna take more than a face lift. Nobody likes to die every 60 seconds.

I'm so psyched. They should probably go back and remake Angel of Darkness. Honestly, it was cool in its concept. I liked the whole urban thing, the mechanics just sucked. They could totally redeem the name if they went back and fixed it.

Crystal Dynamics proved with Legend that it could do what Core Design couldn't...make me a fan.

I'm pleased to see it's coming to PC too. Don't get me wrong the 360 Legends looks good, but I just always prefer buying the same title for PC if given a choice.

This is great. I jsut hope they use the updated controls from Legend rather than the original one. If they did, that would suck!

why the first one? it sucked

if any remake should be made . . . it should definately be TR II

waste of time Eidos. TR is dead

I think that this is a good idea. I got into Tomb Raider rather late and the PC version of the original Tomb Raider I bought always glitched on the third level and shut itself down, I was so annoyed I simply refused to spend another £5 to get it again because i'd lost the reciept. (petty, I know) so to hear that it's being redone is definately good news and judging on the quality of Legend I think it's going to be great, although I think i'll get this one on PC rather than PS2, the graphics were okay on PS2 but on PC they were stunning.

That's why the game will also be available on the PC, which is ahead of the 360 in terms of graphical power (of course if you have onboard video, that's a different story).

Yeah, if they aren't making a 360 version, who cares. I'm pretty much done with my PS2. If you're going to give the game a "face lift," you might as well at least bring it up to today's standards as opposed to those of 5 years ago. Say whatever you want about "Legend," but on the 360 it looked unbelievable - totally the fantasy version of what Tomb Raider should be.

Let's just hope that they remove that stupid grapple and reduce the amount of chit chat from Zip. (if there is a headset.) I loved Legend's model and I hope they use it, however, it needs a little bit more work. Lara looked awesome, but looked a tad childish. They need to make her more mature on appearance and most of all, bring back Lara's attitude from the first 3 games. legend's Lara was sweet and caring, 4 and 5 Lara was sarcastic and AOD Lara was second best, but she was Evil wannabe.

A remake of the first 4 games would be great. Hehe. That would be a dream coming to life.

TR 10th Anniversay Edition WAS canceled, but in the time, it was beign developed by Core Design. As you can see on the trailer, the game would be a total mess, since the physics were ultimately unrealistic and Lara's movements looked cranky. Then, Eidos canceled the development to handle the Anniversary Edition to Crystal Dinamics, and they restarted it all... as everybody said, if only the game have the great realism and fluid movements of Legend (thanks to a really great motion capture), I'm satisfied and I'm buying it... of course, new weapons, new modes, new levels, all of these bonus content would have been well accepted... I can't wait for it!

Oh, about the Sony platforms, no fanboys here please... if you don't have a PS2 or PSP, then buy it for PC...

    THREE CHEERS FOR CRYSTAL DINAMICS!

  • XxDarkRaderxX

    Posted Jun 24, 2006 7:42 am PT

To those of you who thought this game was cancelled, it isn't. Eidos and Core Design were originally developing this game, and it was nearly complete, but it got cancelled. The task was later handed over to Crystal Dynamics, who is now developing the game. I saw a trailer on youtube for the original one, and it looked kind of bad, so I'm glad CD took over the project. Being the huge TR fan that I am, I can't wait for it

This is going to be great, since the first game still the best one, but is forgotten by time, so rebuilding it will be great. I hope some extra content and some new levels, weapons, enemies and bosses make their way to the REMAKE... let's just hope it'll be as good as Legend or better!

It'll probably be as crappy as Legend. Core can make Tomb Raider games great, Crystal Dynamics can't.

Need proof? Play Angel of Darkness on PS2, then play Legend on PS2, Xbox 360 and PC and you'll know exactly how much better AoD really is.

To answer the question "Why a remake?", because the original's play control is so choppy that it is virtually unplayable.

Add tight play control and a few new levels, set it up at a bargain price, and I'll pick it up.

I'd love to play through it again... but only for the Xbox 360. My PS2 is glitching up.. removing the color from the games. Watching Lara Croft in black and white just isn't thrilling and I'm not going to buy a new system because My Xbox 360 keeps me well entertained!

rbarahona, yes yes yes u are 100% right! CD needs to remake this game much like Capcom did for RE. Update the graphics and the controls, while adding new gameplay element and maybe changing up the tombs a bit. Another game that deserves similar treatment is my favorite game: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. With updated graphics and TP controls on the Wii, this remake would dominate!!

Also, people need to stop complaining about exclusives and just buy all 3 systems. Personally I dislike overally cocky Sony and I am a Nintendo fanboy at heart, but that didnt stop me from buying a PS2 and playing all the great games it had to offer.

Meh, Crystal Dynamics fixed what was wrong with the series. Why go back and try to fix the old, clunky games when they can focus on making another Tomb Raider on par with Legend, but longer?

Why? Because they just want to BS this project for some money. w00t!?!!? lol hax1!?!

I have MGS: The Twin Snakes, and it was defnitely worth a remake. There were very little changes made, only improved gameplay mechanics and graphics. But it made everything so much better. Tomb Raider deserves a remake. After seeing the good job that was done on Legend I think it's the smartest thing for them to do. Legend had everything done right, but there just wasn't enough of it. Tomb Raider was one of the very first 3d action/adventure games. I remember how it felt to play a game for the first time that had a sense of size, real physics, and gravity. I think combining all the new ideas from the past ten years with the original story and level designs is a really good idea.

So they aren't going to include any of the ps one TR games? C'mon follow suit. Megaman did it. Instead of making one better they should throw them all together in their original forms. BTW I love anniversary collections.

  • Gameguru86

    Posted Jun 17, 2006 8:52 pm PT

So what? Are they actually redoing past Tomb Raider titles with current gen graphics and improved gameplay, etc.? The old Tomb Raider games had gameplay issues that were so bad it was near unplayable. But that didn't keep me from enjoying the series fully, even the ones deserving of Gamespot's harsh reviews. Perhaps the franchise will finally get the treatment it deserves. If done right, the Tomb Raider series will truly be worthy of the name Legend. Gaming companies should learn from Crystal Dynamics' example, namely that quality should always come before quantity. However, I hope that the next Tomb Raider game is twice as long as the last one.

I saw the video and it looks awsome. I relly like TR Legend and hope that crystal dynamics uses the same game engine. It looks like they will because the video shows here doing similar acrobatics and climing to TRL but the combat system looks like the old one which really sucked. I am asuming its just early in development and they will fix that.
