US console sales charts: June 4-10

Crime pays (but not that much) as the $20 PS2 GTA: Liberty City Stories leads list; DS holds tough, 360 takes majority of top 10.

Two franchises at the opposite ends of the family-friendly spectrum ruled online retailer BestBuy.com's console charts this week. At the top of the heap is the PlayStation 2 version of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, which was released last Tuesday. Right behind it is New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, which has been in the top two since its debut in mid-May.

Liberty City Stories, although a port of a PlayStation Portable game, proved that the GTA franchise won't be slowed down, despite the heaps of controversy it has stirred. After a price cut on the PSP version vaulted it to number five last week, the PS2 version debuted atop the list this week, largely because of its $19.99 price tag.

Slots two through four remained unchanged, with New Super Mario Bros., Brain Age for the DS, and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for the Xbox 360, respectively, sitting tight.

Perhaps spurred by the NBA Finals, but more likely because of a new $40 price tag, NBA 2K6 slammed into the fifth slot, as new Xbox 360 owners pilfered the old catalog of 360 games. Four more 360 games also made the top 10, including last week's number one, Hitman: Blood Money, in at six, the new Game of the Year edition of Call of Duty 2 at number seven, 360 launch title Project Gotham Racing 3 at nine, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Collector's Edition at number 10.

It was World Cup fever beyond the top 10 as Electronic Arts' 2006 FIFA World Cup took 11th (PS2), 12th (Xbox 360), and 18th (Xbox). US Open fever may also be hitting, as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006 for the Xbox 360, after dropping to $40, surprised the charts at number 17, and the standard 360 version of Oblivion fell out of the top 10 to number 14.

Two more DS games grabbed the 13th (Big Brain Academy) and 15th (Mario Kart DS) spots but could be joined by more DS games next week, as the new DS Lite hit retailers this past Sunday.

    GTA:LCS is already out for PS2. This prove how strong Sony is in the market, just wait to see the charts when PS3 is out, I foresee all PS3 and DS in the top 10

    BestBuy is WAYYYYY NOT the best buy. way overpriced. Save 20% or more on Amazon or Gamestop

    Come on stop milking the GTA franchise already and make something new. Rockstart has fallen into the easy "make update to the previous game and state that its really a whole new game" meh cant blame em who woulndt love easy money. I would like to see a bigger scale chart like put in the biggest continents US, Europe, Asia and Africa or something like that this doesnt give a good wiev of the bigger picture on the market.

    Oh and by the way you can't play Black on your 360 and if you have to have both a xbox and a xbox 360 to play your library of games, that you payed MS alot of hard earned cash for, somethings got to be wrong there.

    Are you not listening. All I hear from MS and it's followers is that the 360 was going to come out swinging and own the next generation. Well the 360 has arrived and it's doing less than stellar. 1st they botch a world wide release, then they delay major launch titles, then they say backwards compatibility is not important. Why didn't they wait and do a proper release? I'll tell you why, because MS is nothing but a greedy old man playing hard ball. Their only objective has always been to flood the market place with their name. I believe that is why MS had a such a hard time in Japan. It's about Honour and a good gaming ethic. Not about wiping out other buisness. Now I'll admit that my previous comments may have been exactly the opposite of what I'm saying here, and I will admit that I did it just to piss off the fanboys, but I'm sick of hearing that Sony sucks and other rediculous comments like "Xbox kicks sonys ass."
    I believe Sony has always had the "Gamer" in mind with the Playstation and I find it sad that MS has changed the market place with they're terrible work ethic. Sony has never been one to rush a product, never been the one to build some thing just to take away market share. People must wake up and smell the coffee and see MS as they truely are. I believe most can tell the difference and that is why Playstation is #1.

    Numbers can't prove anything for the future if there's a sharp change in the standard (eg. price). Secondly, Black was also on Xbox genious; 360 will also get Resident Evil 5. You call us fanboys, yet you refuse to even admit that there could even be a good game on 360. You seem to be the real fanboy here. If you really think that the PS3 is so great, then why do you have to keep telling us? You seem a little insecure. It's ok though, that's why you have to spend so much cash to prove you're the "best," just like Sony.

    this list shows nothing cause its just bestbuys "oonline" list its not even their actual store numbers this leaves out gamestop eb and other game retailers. on th title it should say onlin best buy list

    software sales for the 360 are really cleaning house the last couple months. and gamepro said software sales are "mediocre" i think gamepro is a little biased if you ask me.

    These two posts are amusing considering the Sony fanboys arent bashing Microsoft, just saying that it owns most of the charts because its the only next gen system out. Were more than likely to see a myriad of titles up on that list come November, from all three next gen systems.

    The Nintendo DS managed to put two games in the top 10, so that's really cool. The PS2 is dominating the US market, followed by the 360, so it was really good to read that the Nintendo DS is performing well.

    it will bee interesting to see which version of GTA4 will sell best on these charts since it is being released on 360 and ps3 when it first comes out. Also, 6 games in the top ten for 360? wow, and there are 1/20 the amount of 360 owners compared to ps2 owners?

    AND, if so many people are buying ps2's still every month(more then 360 it says), why arent more ps2 games up there?
