Square Enix taps vets to rear more Dragon Quest Monsters

A few sketchy details emerge regarding Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker; Hori, Toriyama, Sugiyama all on board.

The Dragon Quest Monsters role-playing game series, in which players rear the fauna of the popular role-playing universe to do their bidding, will be getting a new addition sometime this year. Square Enix has put up a teaser for the game, titled Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, on its official Dragon Quest Web site. However, within hours of press time, the site was offline for reasons that remain unclear.

For now, only a few details have been disclosed. The game will be released on the Nintendo DS and will support Wi-Fi and DS wireless play. Beyond this, according to Goo Games, Square Enix is tapping some of its best talent for the title. The game is to be directed by Yuji Hori, with character design by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame, while the soundtrack will be written by series composer Koichi Sugiyama.

The exact date and suggested retail price for Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker are still to be announced.

Um... The article, along with most of you commenting, are wrong. This is a spinoff technically speaking. And the game has been out in Japan since late last year.

This game is not a spin-off! There have been 4 other Dragon Quest Monsters games for Gameboy Color and Advance.
Anyways, I can't wait to play this game and I really hope this is actually coming out in the US unlike Caravan Heart.

I just think that the PSP screen is to dark for a good FF. But that in mind I would have said the same about the DS before the lite.

LMAO. CC:FFVII is an action RPG spin-off and the DS is getting FFIII.

Des_Eagle, All of the 'new' FFVII games have been spin-off's. GS even said it themselves Heres proof:

"Square Enix showed off a new trailer for the Final Fantasy VII spin-off for the PSP at its pre-E3 press conference"

    And the link: http://www.gamespot.com/psp/rpg/crisiscorefinalfantasyvii/news.html?sid=6149532&q=Final%20Fantasy%20VII%20spinoff

Now with that being said, I hope Dragon quest Monsters for the DS turns out great. And gets released stateside, because I really want to play this game. It's been so long since I've played DQVIII...

Glad they're making a new one. The three other ones are nowhere to be found, and Amazon won't send used ones outside of the U.S. so I've been out of luck.

I have played the DQ games from the original Nintendo and can't wait for the new DS one. The reason why the DS is so much better than the PSP is that the games play with more than just a joystick. After you have been playing games as long as I have, you start to get tired of normal games. The DS games are so different that it much more fun than a PSP.

With that in mind I hope when they make the new PSP Sony takes tips from the DS.

Wow, WPack911 can't use commas, as well as balanced opinion! Amazing.

As an owner of both a DS and a PSP, I can say that I feel their offerings are even. I'd even give the slight edge to the PSP on the RPG front, given Valkyrie Profile's release, Tales Of Eternia and Crisis Core. The FFIII remake looks rusty, even if the FMVs are stunning.

Still, some guys told me the screenshots to this were beautiful. Can't wait. Can't wait, that is, as long as they give it a modern battle system.

It's not like the one on the PS2. You have to use monsters to battle. Oh and WPack911 we'll see who has the stronger lineup very soon

  • WPack911

Another Great game for the DS, and an RPG at that. Oh and you PSP saying "oh we get some side story FFVII game" that game might not come out till at least 2008 and the DS get's the FFIII remake this year, which is like a whole new game since the real FFIII never came out in the US, and this time it's in 3D with FMV's. Just face it PSP people the DS has stronger line-up then you and always will, and that is why it is out selling you by a wide margin that just keep's getting wider.

WOW!!! That's a lot of talent for the game!!! It's nice to see that Square Enix is starting to make more games for the DS. I'm looking forward to FF III and DQM. Those are games that should be in my library.

"Its good to see Square going back to Nintendo. "

Dragon Quest is from Enix. Enix has never really left Nintendo. Even though it did not publish DQVII for N64, the company did still produce some games for the system. Same for the GC before the merger of it and Square. For handhelds, all Dragon Quest games were published on Gameboys, while Square supported Wonderswan.

    Anyway...

"Square Enix is tapping some of its best talent for the title. The game is to be directed by Yuji Hori, with character design by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame, while the soundtrack will be written by series composer Koichi Sugiyama."

All three of them don't belong to Square Enix, so you can't really call them the company's talents. And yes, all 3 of them have been involved in every single Dragon Quest game.

Following Famitsu, this is now old new to me. Anyhow there's a stack load of RPG heading to the DS here in Japan (amazingly enough there's some too on the PSP though many are PS1 RPG ports). Love the DQM series almost as much as main games in the DQ series since they were on the GB. From current screenshots it's looks very good for a DS game. I dare say it looks better than FFIII which I'm also anticipating. Can't wait...

This is just a spin-off like DQ:Swords for the Wii. They'll keep the flagship series on PS3 =P This game does look awesome though. Ill have to get a DS lite when either FF3 comes out, or this comes stateside (if it ever does). Now all nintendo needs is a US release of mother 3...

Its good to see Square going back to Nintendo. this is what happens to sony when they put more time in to videos and music on the PSP then games.I dont see y there are taking the same approach with the PS3 as the PSP.

Are you crazy, what do you mean too bad for spinoff is for the DS while the PSP gets a stupid compilation. Id rather have a completely new game in the series than a compilation. You need to rethink that.
