TNA Wrestling updates game debut

Development on title due in 2007 "geared up in a major way" last week; Samoa Joe and AJ Styles to be brought in for brainstorming.

Last November, Midway announced that it was stepping into the ring with the up-and-coming federation TNA Wrestling and going after THQ's undisputed US wrestling game championship. But instead of the wild, chair-throwing, body-slamming, pull-apart brawl that usually follows such a revelation in the world of pro wrestling, there's been very little movement on TNA iMPACT! (working title) since.

However, grappling gamers looking forward to the title will be pleased to learn that development on the game "geared up in a major way" last week, according to a news post on the official site of TNA Wrestling. According to the federation, Midway is set to brainstorm ideas for the game with Samoa Joe and AJ Styles, a pair of stars from the company's high-flying, hard-hitting "X-Division." According to TNA, both are hardcore gamers.

The visual side of the game is also set to be defined soon, as Styles and Jeff Jarrett will be undergoing motion-capture sessions for the game at Midway's Los Angeles studio. Styles and Jarrett will be the first characters designed in the game, with "many more" to come.

The news post also mentions that the game "will be available for all new generation systems including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3." Midway's original announcement of the game also mentioned that it had the exclusive rights to publish PC and handheld games based on the federation as well.

The game is currently being developed at Midway's LA studio, which worked on Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Before it was acquired by the publisher, it was known as Paradox Development, creators of the Backyard Wrestling series of games.

Wow, I can't wait for this game. I've been watching WWE all my life, and all it is anymore is talk, talk, talk, and hardly ANY wrestling. And that makes me sad. Don't get me wrong, storylines and feuds are a good thing, but crappy ones aren't. WWE has some very, very stupid storylines, and most of the time, feuds can go a bit overboard, or even WAY overboard, in the case of the Cena-Edge feud. I mean, I miss the good old days. And I consider just about everything before the WW'E' came into play, and certain things now, even, as the good old days. Don't get me wrong, I love wrestling, it's just WWE is starting to get old.

Which brings me to my next part... for the last who knows how long, I've been watching TNA, every Thursday, every week. I love it. I love seeing old favorites of mine being in the ring, and new favorites as well. I think TNA has a great thing going. Good talent, good showings, no overboard storylines, all that good stuff. I admit that the whole Jeff Jarrett crap was ridiculous, but other than that, woot. All TNA needs is a 2 hour show block, and they'd be good to go.

And finally, about the game? I don't know. It could go either way. I'll try it out because I love a lot of Wrestling games, and Wrestling in general. And TNA. I doubt it could compare to THQ's Smackdown! series, but then again, you never know, and anything could happen. I just hope that it's good.

    All hope is lost.

But seriously, I really **** hate it when people say one company is superior, especially when that company still isn't a profitable organization, let alone a publicly traded company such as WWE. Anyone who says TNA has better wrestling or better talent is full of **** Just because they're an alternative to WWE doesn't mean they're better. They're beginning to improve, but they are not on the level that WWE is, especially when it comes to developing their own talent.

Fokis, you're right about everything except the "this game will rock" part. Yes, TNA is superior to WWE, but WWE has the better game company. Face it, Midway sucks. It really is a shame that TNA is getting thrown to some crappy game company when it deserves much better.

this game will rock becuz tna is far far superior than wwe, twice the talent and not the sucky storylines (ne1 remember torrie's dad dieing during sex wid dawn marie?!?!) and they r already involvin the two best tna wrestlerrs (aj style and THE ALMIGHTY SOMOA JOE) whor both avid gamers, i def. see potential. and i gettin angle might jus b the tip tna need. WWE SUX TNA IS THE TRUTH!!!!!

We all know this will probably be a half-assed attempt at making this game that may just look flashy. And for this game to sell and make enough of an impact sales wise, they need to really go over the top.

I think all of us that are checking this out love TNA, and the best part about this game is that its coming out in 2008. Bad for us who want it now, but good for us who really care about the quality. They'll have time to take into account all of the popular things from the SDvs.R series, and at the same time create their own brand of game. I'd like to see more environmental stuff, like when you throw an enemy outside, and he stands up groggy, then an icon should come up for your guy to run across the ring, flip outside and hit the dude on the fly, as is the TNA style. Same type of thing can go for bashing their heads on ring posts, choking them out, pushing them off of the stage, etc similar to the WWE environmental stuff. This could also apply to setting up for big moves. Several times I've seen TNA stars have enough time to set up multiple tables, tacks, piles of chairs in the ring, flaming tables, etc, and something you don’t have time to do that stuff in the game. One or two tables are fine for real time, but if you want to set up 10 tables beside each other for an awesome move, it should be environmental. This would really open up the possibility for some spectacular looking moves and make them easy to do. In a WWE game, would can set up more than one table at a time, but the game doesn't really recognize that on a big scale. On TNA television you've seen guys put through 3, 4, or up to piles of 10 tables in ridiculously huge moves. Making them scripted would make it all possible, easy to do, and easy to pull of some really bad ass stuff.

Tna impact will be a good game out in stores right now but it wont be able to top wwe snackdow vs raw2007 because its sponsored by thq. When tna impact comes out it should have a womens chamionship and i heard that tna waould have a x-division title match but i no they wont be able to add that in the game beacuse if they do they know the game will be fire.Just letting my fans out there know go outside and go wait online for tna impact. I just want to give a shout out to my family and my friend name ryan, malik and my sister boyfriend. I hope the govenor gets me this game for ps2 because i am a loving child i love you brooklyn ny. TNA is by far the better choice over WWE. My only hope is that the TNA game doesn't come off like Backyard Wrestling or WCW Nitro...I prefer the WWF games from the N64 days (like No mercy) or Gamecube's Wrestlemania XIX.

all this game is gonna do is A. be a great game with a good engine or B. be a failure, the game needs to have a CAW feature the 6 sided ring gives a hell of a lot of potential the match types are great also have a lethal lockdown or Ulimate X and even King of the mountain but the Question still remains what will the developers do with impact?

  • boobush

    Posted Aug 10, 2006 10:59 am PT

TNA may be crappy, but it's way better than the WWE, because the matches are way more interesting. Plus I don't know who comes up with the crappy WWE storylines, they're just too corny. I hope this game kicks the Smackdown series ass.

i think someone else should be the developers of this because there is loads of potencial hear and they will probably muck it up like backyard wrestling and then the actual show will go downhill and then the show that is actually better than the wwe will go down the pot and get flushed

Both TNA and WWE have some great wrestlers.

I'm just happy that TNA is getting some exposure (I would like to see CZW get a game too, maybe later). As for TNA being dead with washed up wrestlers, I advise you to search YouTube.com to find out what it really is. A.J. Styles is like Rob Van Dam on an ECW crack binge. I mean Jesus (Hay-soos), the guy is 5' 10", 210 lbs and he slapped Samoa Joe in a Torture Rack and Styles Clashed 'em.

TNA crosses the line that WWE won't touch. When was the last time you saw a guy in the WWE do a Shooting Star Press of a steel cage? Two months ago for TNA, as for the WWE... I don't know. TNA just got a roof on their cage, first thing they did with it was throw a table and a ladder on top for an ungodly high spot (Which should be in the game).

WWE is wrestling entertainment. TNA is wrestling.
WWE has Superstars. TNA has wrestlers.
TNA is the alliance of WCW, ECW, CZW, JCW, and former WWE wrestlers. I just hope that Midway can capture the entirety of it. From the Puro and Lucha Libre to the Highspots and Hardcore. TNA is what most wrestling gamers have been waiting for. Breaking down the walls of the box and giving an old genre a new life with a whole new potential of possibilities.

And to end my post I have to say... PLEASE DON'T SUCK!
