US console sales charts: May 21-27

New Super Mario Bros. keeps kicking on retailer's best-seller chart; Table Tennis makes strong debut on Bestbuy.com's best-seller list.

When Rockstar Games announced it was making a Table Tennis game for the Xbox 360, many were skeptical. Some considered it a cynical move by the publisher to put an E-rated fig leaf over the mound of money generated by its M--and briefly AO--rated Grand Theft Auto series. Still others wondered why gamers would pick up a game based on a pastime that's already played indoors.

Well, the naysayers got paddled this week. According to retail figures from Bestbuy.com, Table Tennis was the seventh-most-popular console game in the US. It was one of six Xbox 360 games in the top 10, including Tom Clancy's Advanced Warfighter (third), Madden NFL 06 (eighth), and Call of Duty 2 (ninth). The regular and collector's editions of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the 360 were fifth and sixth. And though raw figures were not provided, it is likely that if sales of the two Oblivions were combined, it would have been the week's top-selling console title.

The two current-gen console games in the top 10 were number-10 Kingdom Hearts II for the PlayStation 2 and the surprising second-place finisher, Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix for the GameCube, which went back into print after a brief hiatus. The top prize, though, was another title starring Nintendo's iconic Italian plumber. DS favorite Super Mario Bros. was once again the week's top title, proving the popularity of both the venerable franchise and the portable platform. Further cementing the DS's status was the number-four game, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day.

    You guys do realize that Table Tennis is the only new 360 game on there. CoD2 was a launch game and it still makes top 10 after 7 months. The 360 is definitely doing great.

    While it's true that the PS2 is 6 years old it has an installed base that's more than 10 times the 360's. Not to mention that the PSP didn't show up at all on this list. I'm not a fanboy of any one company, it's just the cycle of this business that no one company can stay on top for very long. The next six months will be very interesting indeed.

    madden and call of duty is about 8 months old. cant belive its still there. there sure are alot of xbox 360 games on the list.

    its quite comical how everyone is talking gloomily about Sony's 6 year olf PS2. quite honestly, if Microsoft couldn't outsell Sony's SIX year old PS2 with their SEVEN month old 360, then something would be terribly wrong with them. as it stands, i'm happy to see 360 games dominating the sales charts (at least with Best Buy). its just a sign of the coming of the next-generation. as far as KH2 being PS2's only top ten game, well, thats just a testament of the waning days of the venerable PS2. in six months the war truly starts. until them, all other assessments of how well whoever is doing is just fanboy-biased prematurity.

    so many 360 games is suprising the install base is miniscule next to current gen i guess its just the people who have money spend it. DS had a fairly sharp outing. but overall suprisingly dominated by 360

    wow some of you people are idiots and clearly dont understand what these numbers mean. For one, these are only sales from best buy. And two, these are individual game sales. In no way does it mean that 360 games are outselling ps2 games on the whole. When somebody goes to buy a ps2 game they have hundreds of choices to choose from. When somebody goes to buy a 360 game they have about 10. So it shouldnt be a surprise that they have 5 or 6 games on there. Every 360 owner I know has the same 3-4 games.

    This is just suprising when you think that 6 months ago there were not that many 360s to go around and now there are enough to make a dent in the PS2's sales.

    Wow. Mario Mix at number 2. I wouldn't have seen that coming. I thought Mario Mix didn't make it far in the charts because no one was interested. Guess I was wrong.

    LOL its funny how people still compare a ps2, to a 360. But for what the 360 really is at core. I guess its fair. Its not really NExt gen anyways its more so the only new thing out.

    I'm quoting this article because I think some people missed this spot "it is likely that if sales of the two Oblivions were combined, it would have been the week's top-selling console title." I missed it as well.

    A GC game still at #2... this is more surprising than Ice Age 2 being in the UK top 10. Well Nintendo are making a big comeback after the last few years of being overshadowed by Sony and MS. The 360 seems to be doing surprisingly well too, and as for Sony... well they seem to have died down alot. Interesting chart

    ps2 only has one game in the top 10? OUCH! And i agree, i think Table Tennis is going to become a decently big franchise. Sequel: one year from now on PS3 and 360.

    Yes, as if BestBuy did'nt account for more than 1/3 of US software sales. Trust me, its the best indicator you can get and when the official monthly chart comes about, u'll see exactly how much it means.

    WOOT @ MARIO AND KH2! KH2 still on there after 2 months... this is a sign, Square Enix! A sign saying: don't wait 3 and a half years again before releasing the next KH console game (like you did with KH2 ).
