Source: A game industry report from research firm The Diffusion Group.

The official story: "As you are used to hearing from us, we have no comment on rumors or speculation."--Microsoft rep.

What we heard: Earlier this year, the game industry was rocked by reports that Microsoft was developing a handheld under the code name Project Origami. After the Origami (pictured) turned out to be merely an " ultra-mobile PC," the Microsoft handheld rumors died down...until San Jose Mercury News reporter Dean Takahashi released excerpts of his book The Xbox 360 Uncloaked: The Real Story Behind Microsoft's Next-Generation Video Game Console. One excerpt said that Microsoft did indeed have handheld plans, with the project being led by the once-ubiquitous and now-invisible executive J Allard. However, according to Takahashi, that project was later scrapped, making Allard's continued low profile all the more mysterious.

Today, the Microsoft portable rumors once again heated up, thanks to a freshly minted report from Texas-based research firm The Diffusion Group. Titled "On the Future of Portable Game Consoles: Analysis & Forecasts," the report asserts that Microsoft's portable is probably on track to hit markets in either late 2007 or early 2008.

"With global [portable gaming console] revenues expected to reach $3 billion annually by 2008, and with only Sony and Nintendo active in the PGC space, Microsoft has before it an incredible opportunity," report coauthor Thomas Wolf wrote in a statement. "It has a critical brand presence in the console space, the breadth and depth of gaming titles, and the marketing clout necessary to enter this space and win decent market share."

But while many outlets have reported the Diffusion paper as being an official announcement of a mini-Xbox, it remains only informed speculation. "New research from The Diffusion Group suggests that Microsoft will likely leverage its Xbox franchise to enter the portable game console market in late 2007 or early 2008," read the report. (Emphasis added.) Indeed, the press release says that the company's portable strategy hasn't even been finalized. "Microsoft has been evaluating two options regarding its portable gaming strategy: licensing a version of its Xbox OS for others to build portable hardware designs upon, or introducing its own branded PGC," read the report.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that it's been officially announced and dated. Not bogus that somewhere in the inner sanctum of Microsoft's Redmond, Washington, campus, a portable plan is being hatched.

I have no use for a portable gaming system. If I still traveled a lot, it'd be my new best friend. There fore I will buy more Xbox 360 games with the money I would have spent on this handheld from Microsoft. And if it turns out that this rumor is false, then I'll spend the money on games for the Xbox 360 anyways!

Even with the PSP around, the Big N is still dominating the handheld market. They have had the years of experience. Regardless of all the portable capabilities of PSP or this Microsoft gizmo, I still believe N has the upper hand

It would be nice to see some REAL competition in handhelds. The Gameboy As and DSs are so outdated in terms of hardware it's not funny.

hahaha i say let Micro$oft make a handheld and lose more money!!!
coz it seems to be a tradition for M$ they lost money on Xbox they lost money on Xbox360 and they are going to lose more money on Xbox-mini!!!

Sega tryed to beat Nintendo with its big colour screen, but Nintey had the cheaper handheld, more user friendly, and better games!!!
Sony tried to beat Nintendo on the handheld market and they made the same mistake and Sony are losing loads of money on every PSP they sell!!!
And M$ are gonna do the same thing!!!

I can't wait to see them try. Then again I can't wait to see nintendo obliterate yet another company's attemps to enter the portable console business. Sony was the only one who will gain even a small amount of it, and even that isn't doing too well compared to DS

This is funny. I always thought MS had a BETTER chance at the handheld portable sales in Japan than a console.

Personally, they should have made one first before the PSP. Now it going to be too much competition on the handheld side.

Either way now MS has an UP HILL battle that they may now never win in Japan.

My suggestion for MS FORGET handheld gaming unless you intend to partner with someone BIG. Save those dollars and produce 360 and 1080 titles. Because the Wii is coming!

i wonder what is going to happen in 2010? 10 ago it was just two companys who was competing, Nintendo and Sega, the gaming world was happy and living in piece, two great companys that makes good games and have great support from 3rd party, but now there 3 company try to win the market, two of them just want money, and for the handheld, 5 years ago it was 1, now its two (which is fine by mean), but afterwards it will be 3, and the fun of games will be gone.
ok, when Microsoft says "here is Mini-X-box", thats the last day I will play games.

Now boys and girls, lets read the WHOLE article before me make comments on it. People saying "Yeah its just a portbale Pc, they said that weeks ago, Gamespot is so lame". .... Yes it DOES say in the atricle that weeks ago Origami was revealed as an ultra mobile computer. What the article then says, is Microsoft might be working on ANOTHER project which may be a handheld.

If Microsoft is making a handheld, I'm curious on how much it will cost us. So far, they're vision isn't really about the games, it's about the power of the hardware. Microsoft really needs to stick with computers and not with the gaming industry.

Well, why not? IT should: play music, movies, games. Have WiFi, internet browser, etc. Micrsoft does have good developer support and game library. If they can make a handheld that can play Xbox 1.0 games, I'll buy it.

Ok Microsoft if you enter the Handheld market. Make a really good machine that plays videogames only. The PSP does more but if they had focused only on games they might have beaten Nintendo. Forget Movies, Music, Internet,Text messaging, Television and phone capabilities, Downloading wallpaper and "Horse Amour" and extra bits. Make a better Gameboy/PsP a focus on Games only. Yes a portable multimedia Device sounds good in practice. The PsP was supposed to crush the Nintendo DS and completely take over. They did not. If Microsoft Takes on Nintendo in the handheld arena. Will they be smart enough to beat Nintendo at the own game. Or will they follow the Sony path and make a really expensive do everything machine. That looks good but not many people will buy?

Wow, some people here are jealous of the DS. The DS is the greatest handheld, and will be even greater with the DS lite. The PSP has flopped big time, no games, too expensive. Microsoft would do almost as badly as the PSP. I can't wait for the DS lite, heck the GBA SP is better than the PSP.

Becuase one company is doing something, no other company can ever do anything even remotely like it, becuase it will FAIL.

The Playstation is going to FAIL becuase the N64 OWNS the console market.

Windows is going to FAIL because the Apple II OWNS the computer market.

The Ipod is going to FAIL becuase the Walkman OWNS the music market.

-Blank- is going to FAIL becuase -Blank- OWNS the -Blank- market.

I don't think that Nintendo DS has any advantage over Sony's PSP other than price... Oh, yes... As someone already told here, parents always will take home WHAT THEY THINK will be a very good TOY for their kids (no, I don't think the DS is a toy but, to many parents, the difference between a DS and a PSP are so BIG that THEY think the first is a toy -cheap, easy to use, cheap, colorful, cheap, has many kiddy games, cheap... and cheap- and the other is a multimedia thingy -expensive, difficult to use, very expensive, not has as many kiddy games, "OMG, if my kids just broke that EXPENSIVE thing I will kill them"... and EXPENSIVE) that they will bring a lot of those to their children.

If the PSP was the cheaper model, then THE PARENTS would take that home no matter how their kids cry or beg for the DS. So, it's a question of tastes and numbers.

The games? Sorry but the DS has A LOT OF GREAT GAMES FROM THE VERY START. Sony started selling the PSP making a lot of noise about multimedia so their games ARE STARTING to come NOW... We hope that, at years end, the PSP will have the games it deserves. And yes, PSP games tend to be for young adults.

I have the two of those... And I LOVE THE PSP for the MULTIMEDIA CAPABILITIES (I see a lot of movies in there) and I LISTEN TO MUSIC on my PSP... iWhat? Not for me.

I don't really know if another handheld is a good idea. It seems that "handheld" is equal to "Nintendo" and, step by step, little by little, Sony is making a name for the PSP, but not the market. Anyhow, is a good entry for them.

Let's see what will happen here.

    Love to all.

Handheld seems to be bigger with kids or others that have time to hang out away from home and play games. As a working adult and parent, I do not have this time or even want this. I play the xbox at home for an hour a day that I have free. So this devise will need to do stuff for the specific market for handhelds, whatever that is. But for me, it is merely a so what.

Most people seem to be missing the point... all this talk of Halo and two joysticks means nothing to the average person on the street. The reason the Nintendo DS has done great is because it has a system (and games) that appeal to everyone... For example, every girl I know has a DS just to play Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing etc... none of these girls (which arent gamers btw) would dream of buying some expensive machine cos it had two joysticks and played Halo... that just doesnt mean anything for them. To win the handheld market it needs needs to appeal to a range of different people. The PSP is never gunna win over Nintendo because all the games are aimed at teenage boys (basically).

This will be the biggest waste of development time since the mac first came out....why try and enter into a market that doesn't even have room for two systems, let alone three. Sony failed miserably and so will microsoft because no one wants the exact same games that they have on their consoles with crappier graphics and no battery life. Just let Nintendo have the market, at least they know what to do with it!
