SCEE CEO: PS3 would sell five million even with no games

Sony Europe honcho tells UK press that five million consumers would buy a PS3 regardless of launch library.

In a recent interview with Computer and Video Games, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves told the Web site he was worried less about moving units at the PS3's launch than he was about maintaining sales after early adopters had purchased their systems. "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even [if] it didn't have games," he told the site.

CEO David Reeves's statement is only mildly arrogant, but it is tremendously correct. Sony can sell millions of consoles without lifting a finger. (Yes, there probably are that many Sony fanboys out there.) But that's a shortsighted perspective. Like many of you have already asked, what about the next five million units? What about 50 million units sold? That's going to take more than some fancy buzzwords and new technology with a PlayStation logo on the front.

Ultimately, it's always about the games.

I'm going to let all of you in on a secret!! If you subtract all the new games that will be availlable for both 360 and PS3 at the PS3's launch you have a grand total of 5 exclusive titles. How can a person justify spending 600+ dollars for five titles it's simple they can't. So what if MGS4 is only for PS3 are you willing to spend 600+ bucks to play one game. 360 is going to have a price drop near the PS3 launch date. Which means you can get a 360 premium system and no less than 6 games for the same price as one PS3 unit. Plus Microsoft is going to have a HUGE wave of exclusive titles right through the holliday season and well in to next year. Yes I know they had more time to develope games for the 360. Yet games in the 360 lineup were delayed and the system shortage didn't win friends either. The fact that Sony didn't capitalize on these errors and slow down 360 sales to a manageable level is a major blow to the PS3. I'm not even going to talk about how badly the WII will damage PS3 sales. In three years time people will look back and say " Remember when Sony made the PS2 and how great it was. I wonder where it all went so very wrong ".

I have a feeling that he was horribly mis-quoted. Just like everybody else is, i think gamespot is trying to put Sony in a bad light. He might have said it, but I don't think he meant it the way it came out. Bottom line, this company needs sales to win the war, and I know sony is smarter than this to say things like that.

Sony should be reading all our comments here they obviously dont listen to the buyers. In time i want all the new consoles, and in time i belive PS3 will be the best but its not gonna happen anytime soon. Maybe ill wait untill Final Fantasy XIII is out to get one.

Blu-Ray is what will make the PS3 stand out above the other consoles in the long run. If Sony only offered a DVD drive the games would lack the bit-rate for High-definition output. Frame rates would drop down to that of the XBOX 360 and Wii, (Next Gen Multi platform games like Sonic have reportedly been subjected to drops in frame rate on E3 demos). Without blu-ray you would require more use of Hard Disk space for installing games, like on XBox. Basically, Blu-ray is what's making it cost so much, on top of all the other premium specs, but without that, it wouldn't be truly next-gen. It would be like half a generation further, like Wii and 360.

What worries me most about this is the intention Sony is showing with their PS3 in this comment. Basically what they are telling is; 'We don't care if it's too expensive, we don't care about games, the only thing we care about is the fact that there are enough idiots out there that are willing to spend their hard earned savings on any product that has a Sony badge on it'. Shame on you Sony, you have lost another hardcore Playstation supporter, as I will not even consider a PS3 this time around (after spending thousands of euros on their previous systems and games...

Trying to get my head around what titles will be at launch, IGN showed an estimated percentage completion of titles shown at E3, and many were way below 60%. That is quite bad, considering works been coded now for well over 12 months, and longer for others. Even without DEV kits, many companies were programming on a generalised performance basis.

It appears then, that development for this system, is slow, which is likely to equate to high prices as already speculated here, as well as long development cycles.

Killzone I wouldnt expect to see until the 3rd quarter of 07 at the earliest. Motorstorm we know want be shipped until the first quarter of 07 at the earliest. Heavenly sword could make a Xmas debut, but thats still very slim, and Feb/March release looks more likely. Warhawk will likely make launch, though not really the most spectacular looking title, its gone backwards a long way from the hyper trailers last year.
Ridgeracer will likely make a launch, but to be fair, those that have seen it, does it really look much different than predecessors? Other than speed ramp, and draw distance eliminated, the game looks the same. Ok please bare in mind, Ive only witnessed this from streamed content, but it didnt exactly blow my cotton socks off.
Lastly, I would imagine UT2007 will be ready game wise, but will there online services be upto speed at launch?

So, if Ridgeracer, Warhawk and possibly UT2007 are the three best titles PS3 is likely to offer come launch, plus a pleathora of FIFA sport franchises. Is a launch purchase worth the hassle of long cues, early pre-orders and a quickly emptied bank account.

When ever I purchase a brand new system, I like something to show off to friends, a title that is supposed to show what the system can do. I'd be hard pushed to impress anyone, including attempting to convince myself that this was really worth the cost of two other systems, with accessories and games.

I think the thing that worries me most is, how long will this unit last before it snuffs it. At the cost of £450 approx per unit, spending around £1200 including price drops over a few years is a steady shell out. When we buy one, do we keep a spare £400 in the bank incase it pops.

The whole arrogance behind Sony at present really shows two things. One the true colour of Sony as market leaders, we don't really give a damn attitude what will be out, but your paying for it, and secondly it seems they are aware of this huge bombshell they have dropped, and in order for them to recouperate there losses quick, they are expecting the consumer to forfit this with a system, that really isnt worth anything close.

If it was left as a DVD system, would the cost be £150-200 cheaper? Is that the price were having to pay in order to force Sony into a better position to sell Blu Ray to movie studios as the choice format?
There is certainly no need for that storage potential for games, any title packing over 20gig in data, I certainly wouldnt expect to see it on the shelves for at least 3 years from launch date.

In 3 years time, its likely Microsoft will be lifting the lid off a new console, considering the 360 would be celebrating its 4 birthday by then, and with technology both cheaper in Hi Def Wars, and leader deceided between the two, coupled with the fact any GFX processing kit four years from now is likely to wipe the floor with the RSX (PCs will be on par with it by end of year), it would seem that the PS3 you spent a lot of cash on, to be future proof as Sony keep stating (last year the commented it would be around for the next 9 years before another system come out) its just not going to happen. If Sony release a system then in 4 to 5 years from now, thats also not going to work, as lot of people have spent a small fortune on a system thats being replaced.

Either way, Sony will be in trouble financially regardless of how many they shift, and if consumers don't see through the smoke and mirrors this launch, they certainly will by the time PS4 hits the shelves.

those 5 million are the reason why sony put out a 600 dollar version of the ps3, and those 5 million are the reason why sony is banking so much blue ray: to get 5 million users without ANY additional advertisment or investments. As sad is it to realize that there are people so devoted they would buy it regardless of other factors, its those people who will hold sony over until the price drops start rolling in. 100 million units world wide and counting; sony knows that they have depth and that there is a percentage of their consumers that they can shove an expensive piece of equipment down their throats and still keep the loyalty.

The PS3 will sell well due to the fact that its got SONY printed on it. People remember the hours of fun from titles like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Devil May Cry, Silent Hill and Resident Evil to name but a few.

Plus its got a Blu-Ray drive ($600 anyway), 60gig harddrive (3 times the size of the xbox 360), plays all Playstation 1 and 2 games (without annoying updates), upscales PSOne and PS2 games to 420p, has an innovative controller and is roughly twice the power of the xbox 360.

All this for that price, lets stop moaning people and remember its a Playstation - its gonna be good.

I don't think the average gamer wants FPS all day everyday and again is the reason XBOX will lose. Of that list of 24 games only about six of those weren't FPS and of those six the only one that is recognisable to the average gamer may be Fable. M$ is doing the same thing they did last gen and we all know how much of a winning formula that is.

The guy wasn't being arrogant, he simply said they have built a certain reputation and if the console wasn't launching with the best games their customers know that the games were on the way. It's a fact that the system would sell if there were no games for it don't u remember the cr@p that the PS2 launched with. He's simply making a point that the first 5 or 6 million will sell with the current launch lineup and the really big titles scheduled for 2007 will have them take back the lead in the next gen war.

Oh please... Sony will sell 5 million units, or even more... because it has a legion of Japanese LOYAL fan boyZ and doesn't give a s**t about usa or europe. Untill those two regions get so mad with envy, hyped by news from over the ocean, .. that ps3 is so great... sooner or later YOU will buy PS3 too.... or else you will be watching your best friend rock those games as he will have the console... and you still won't. Besides when you think about buying PS3 think that you're NOT supporting MicroS... and PLEASE don't tell me that MS isn't arrogant.... Sony had the time to develop such technology, it took courage to spend those bizarre sums of money... MS would rather issue patches and updates to it's software rather than build a new factory for it's consoles... And all you do is complain.... Fine.. stick with Ms... I'll be a part of the happy 5 million knowing I have a better console... Games will come... it's business

    Posted May 22, 2006 8:27 pm GMT

Yes, let's just keep bashing each other's favorite console because that will solve everything.

I think that we're going to see a lot of surprises in the next generation. Sony fans, I'm sorry to say, are not going to enjoy the near unchallenged supremacy that they have had for nearly a decade now. For all of its bells and whistles, the PS3's price is going to be a limiting factor for many people (I flipped when I say that the price actually exceeded the $500 mark), and the poor quality of launch games (in general, that is) means that many people are going to wait for the "must-buy" titles before they actually are willing to fork over that much cash. This isn't to say that PS3 can't win the next generation, but if it does, it will be a matter of percentage points.

XBox fans, at this point in time, certainly have a lot to brag about. Despite its lack of a "next-gen" format, the 360 is out now, costs less, and has a proven online service (hell, even I'm interested in some of Live's features, and I've never even seen it). Yet just because Microsoft is patting itself on the back doesn't mean that they've won the next generation yet. Saying "no" to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD (the add on drive does not count; add ons never permeate 100% throughout the installed base) is a lot like when Nintendo stuck with its cartridges when the CD was the next hot thing; it's cost effective for Microsoft to stick to DVDs, but if there is a change in formats in the next 5 years, the 360 suddenly looks likes yesterday's news (if you don't believe me, why don't you all just pull out your floppy and VHS collection and prove me otherwise).

Are consumers going to know that the XBox 360 is just as good as a PS3? Sorry to say, but unless all you Microsoft fans are willing to get on a soapbox for all of Christmas outside of every Best Buy in America, the Sony brand name is going to have an impact on a lot of parents (Besides, kids suck. When was the last time you heard a kid say "mommy, I want that old toy that came out a year ago?" They're going to want the new expensive console, and their parents, just like during that whole N-Sync fad, are going to fork over hundreds, if not thousands of dollars for them). Being cheaper may be a good selling point at first, but let's ask the N64 and the Gamecube what value there is in being the cheapest console on the market. If being an American has taught me one thing, it is that "cool gadgets = social status." It is by far the worst reason to purchase a console, but for all of its mistakes, Sony has succeeded in getting consumers to believe that the Cell processor is the "best." XBox consumers may be getting the "smarter deal" in their minds, but if the vast majority of Americans were smart consumers, we would have dumped the Hummer and SUVs years ago.

Yes, consumers want a choice, but they also like things to be simple. 360 users may get to choose about whether or not they want high definition media format support, and they may choose what online plan they want, but I also remember that XBox fans didn't get to choose what XBox games got backwards compatibility on their new console, nor did they get to choose if they wanted their console with or without that power brick. Sony just has a different list of things that they want their users to choose from. Complain all you want about the lack of HDMI support on the $499 version, but remember that Microsoft's console has no HDMI support whatsoever. Complain all you want that the 360's second generation games are way better than the PS3's launch titles, but remember that XBox games looked similar to the PS2's during its first generation. Whatever its faults may be, Sony's lack of options in some areas doesn't mean that it is doomed to failure. If anything, it means that the gaming market is big enough for different people with different ideas to try to make their mark. In the typical Microsoft fashion, XBox fans tend to think of the gaming industry as a "there can be only one" market. I certainly wouldn't want to see only one console survive this war, and I doubt any of you do either, because you 360 fans can sure bet that the only reason Bungie is working on Halo 3 is because they are under pressure from Microsoft to counter the PS3 launch somehow.

And one final note: why is it that XBox fans talk so wonderful about their consoles when they refer to Microsoft as M$ in the PC industry? And why is it that Sony gets the $ symbol tacked on its name in the console world? Apparently, we all just like to pick on the big guys in the industry because it's the popular thing to do. So I guess this whole post was meaningless . . . carry on with your useless bantering.

Guys what he really means, is that because of the "VALUE" the PS3 has right out of the box, consumers wouldnt have a problem buying the unit without games. Lets face it, The PS3 is the "ULTIMATE" living room media center. It does absolutley everything from burning music to the hard drive, watching high definition movies, surfing the internet, programming games on the system (BUILT IN LINUX SOFTWARE) and much much more. Its practically a computer. And just to even think about the fact that it plays BLU-RAY 50+ GIG PS3 games powered by CELL and RSX is simply amazing. Built in bluetooth allows you to hook up wireless keyboards, mouses, steering wheels you name it, directly to the system. THE 360 is the DREAMCAST REPEAT. Once the PS3 hit no one is gonna buy a 360. You can scream HALO and GEARS OF WAR ALL U WANT but guess what I can scream ??? DEVIL MAY CRY 4, GRAN TURISMO HD, SOCOM 5, TEKKEN 6, 8 DAYS, FINAL FANTASY 7, FINAL FANTASY 13, METAL GEAR SOLID 4, GOD OF WAR 3, VIRTUA FIGHTER 5, NEXT GEN DRAGON BALL Z, NEXT GEN ACE COMBAT, NEXT GEN SHADOW OF COLLOSSES, GETAWAY, KINGDOM HEARTS 3, THE MANY GAMES CAPCOM WILL ONLY BRING TO THE PS3, RATCHET & CLANK, HOT SHOTS GOLF SERIES, JAK 4, NEXT GEN SLY COOPER, THE MANY RPG GAMES FROM JAPAN DEVELOPERS. THESE ARE GAMES THAT WILL NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY ON 360. SO YOU THINK ABOUT IT ?? THE PS3 IS THE LOOK AT THE FUTURE, THE NEXT GENERATION OF HOME CONSOLES OFFICALLY BEGINS NOVEMBER 17, 2006.

Sad thing is that Sony will sell their 5 million units at launch, because Sony has such a big name right now with their great success of PSone and PS2. Still, for him to say that, Sony would sell that many units even without games, tells you how sorry the shape of the games must be in right now. What good is a new system if you don't have any games to play on it? Also, they will sell that many to the hard core gamers, who must have every system that comes out, no matter what. However, a game system is all about the games, not a Blu-Ray player for movies. Granted, some of their games look pretty good, but I'm sorry they are not $600 good. It will be interesting to see how many and how fast units go after the launch to the casual gamers, or to parents who maybe don't know that much about games and want to get their children a new gaming system for christmas. Hmmmm.....let's see, a system for $600, or one with just as good of graphics for $400 (maybe less by then), or maybe even one with a funky new controller for $200-$300?
I really think that for Sony to maintain their dominance they need to remember that it is about the games and do something about the price issue. Every system that has come out around $600 (Neo-Geo and 3DO) has failed. Granted, Sony has more of a repretation then those other companys, but I don't think Sony can just sit back lightly and think that this price thing isn't an issue.

I wonder how much PS3 games are going to cost? Why did Sony not mention the price of their games at E3, that is more revelant than the price of the console itself. Sony may sell 5 million at launch but it's on the start of a large decline on its market share, Sony is looking like Intel was before AMD took almost have the market from them.

If sony feels five million ppl are gonna buy a ps3 and not be able to get games for it at launch then sony is saying "Screw you" to their fan base. and i'm pretty sure half those ppl are gonna buy a nintendo wii and whatever launch games that system will have including Twilight princess and mario galaxies. Sony is now being cocky and arrogant and that'll hurt them big time come launch!!!

Fine it's a cheap blu-ray player, those 5 million can go and buy the thing. But they can fork out the likely same price for a film as I'll pay for a game, and their fun will be over in around 2 hours while I'll be playing for a lot longer, COZ I'LL HAVE ACTUAL GOOD GAMES. I'm sure this will suffer the same fate as the PSP, it'll be overshadowed by other consoles games whilst it tries to sell films that people are just buying on DVD.

Disjoost21, To answer your question whether or not "do you use your PS 2 as a DVD player", I can say that I honestly do, due to the fact that I did'nt have a DVD player when I picked up the PS 2 in the first place, so I felt it was a good deal then, I don't use the controller to play my DVD's with, I was smart enough to pick up the remote..,thats the only thing that would make it stink to me, was if I had to use the controller
