Prey demo date announced

Shootin' sample from 3D Realms hunts down PCs, 360s in June; demo will feature single- and multiplayer content.

Gamers have long waited to sink their teeth into Prey, the shooter from 3D Realms and Human Head that was first announced back in the late 1990s. The game is headed for the Xbox 360 and PC July 10, after a long stint in development limbo.

2K Games and 3D Realms aren't waiting around for midsummer to let gamers try their hand at the sci-fi first-person shooter. On the 3D Realms Web site, the company has announced that the demo for the game will be available for the PC and Xbox 360 on June 22.

Details on the intricacies of the demo have yet to be revealed, but early word from the developer indicates it won't be tiny. According to 3D Realms, the demo will consist of five levels, picked from both the multiplayer and single-player portions of the game.

In Prey, gamers play as Tommy, a Native American auto mechanic who finds himself at the center of an alien invasion. Using the powers of his ancestors and a healthy helping of firearms, Tommy takes on the bad guys in the grafity-defying, portal-hopping action game.

Prey has not yet been rated and will retail for $49.99 and $59.99 on the PC and Xbox 360, respectively. Limited-edition versions will also be available for $10 more. For more details on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Microsoft increased their licensing fees for the 360 that is why game are more expensive, doesnt bother me I am getting a gamefly account, rent a game beat it then sent it back and wait for another. I only buy the games that I think have good replay value, such as GRAW

I can't wait for this game, and a 5 level demo is going to be a great appetizer for the 2 weeks leading up to its release. I just hope it does not disappoint and enough gamers pick this up to give it an awesome on-line community.

I hope that it's not 'outdated' because of innovations made in the 10 years it's been in development. I'd hate to see it just be 'average' after all the renewed hype.

Well Traiklin, you bring up an interesting point, but you are forgetting that nintendo's "revolutionary" controller requires special attention by game designers. For instance, say Madden 2008 is made for all three next gen systems. Making it for the X360 and PS3 will be almost identical to one another, except for a some programming differences here and there. Now take the Wii, considering its controller design is COMPLETELY differenent, a team of designers will probably have to figure out a way to make the controller-say- throw the ball when you flip the controller with your wrist. This takes time, research, extra man-hours, and ultimately, more money to produce the end product.

And ApisBee, the reason PC games dont cost $60 bucks like the X360 is because game developers don't have a fee to pay anyone. Think about it, who is going to charge game developers? Dell? Gatway? Not quite. See, with Xbox360, developers are basically being charged to make games for microsoft's system, and that fee helps microsoft get out of the red on the system costs. With PC, game developers don't get charged a fee by anyone, so they factor out the cost it takes the make the game, plus their profit margin, and that pricetag equals roughly $50 and has so for the last 4 or 5 years.

Why does the PC port cost $10 more than the PC version? Does the 360 version use more than one CUP thread? What do 630 players get extra for that $10 penalty? Shouldn't the port be $10 less than the PC?

xbox 360 games are $10 more to cover Microsoft's loss on the system. Basically they are charging every developer that makes a game a $10 fee to make games for the x360 so microsoft doesnt get pounded for every system they produce. This is the same tactic that's been used since the beginning of consoles. The justification for games being $60 as opposed to $50 is simply because these new consoles or more expensive to build than they used to be. The reason first party games are cheaper is because they don't need to charge a $10 fee, because they own the system Easy as pie.

it's going to be interesting to see how it get's justified for the Wii.

Since games are just a tad bit better graphically on the Wii and Nintendo never goes overboard on technology third party's can't really justify charging everyone $60 for a game when it could easily be done for $40 or $50.

this game looks pretty stupid IMO. All the demos i saw were boring generic FPS action. I guarantee that this doens't get higher than a 7.5 when gamespot ranks it, and iI wouldn't be surprised at all to have it score under a 7.

One more thing the 10$ bump is most likely going to MS if not then we are just getting jibbed since the total game sales are from consoles nearly 76% on average accorind to wikipedia. This must also explain why MS games are 50 instead of 60$ granted i would pay ms 100$ for a halo 3 collectors edition. they will probably sell it for that much because they know they can and have the normal one go for 70$.

Thank you 3d realms ive preordered this and im still a little PO'ed over the 50 $ PC and 60$ 360 but i guess ms gets the extra 10 otherwise its just a rip off. This totaly makes the 50$ a year subscription to xbl worth it and its 5 level wow im impressed.

I agree with the others about the demo, it would be nice to see one BEFORE the game is actually released since it's supposed to help you decide if you want to get the game or not.

It also let's you find out if your system really can run the game or not (but for some reason the Tribes 2 demo worked perfectly on my old computer yet when I got the full game it refused to work properly).

It just seems REALLY stupid when a demo comes out months after a game is released, at that point anyone who really wanted the game already got it and the ones interested in it probably got it to (and were either dissapointed or happy), the only one I can think of though off the top of my head is Half-life 2, I think the demo finnaly came out over 2 months after the games release.

19 days might not seem like much but it is a good chunk of time to test it out, almost 3 weeks before the game comes out, if you can't make a desicion in that time frame then the game probably ins't for you.

To bad more games didn't do this, release a demo almost 3 weeks prior to release of the full game so people actually have time to test the game out and see if it's for them (just put a THIS IS A DEMO in one of or all of thecorners so people remember they are only playing an incomplete demo of the game.

Microsoft is doing a good job of bringing some of the best aspects of the PC gaming community (downloadable demos, online play, etc) to the console world. Now if they open games up to user-created mods, we'll be all set.

The x360 verison is more the pc becasue microsoft is making the money lost on the console in the games.

This game looks killer- hopefully if they're showing us that much demo love the game itself won't be a wimpy 7-9 hours. It's pretty generous of any developer to dedicate resources to a demo, you know?

"Is this game ever coming out? Seriously, I guarantee it won't see its 'June 22' release date."

Dude the DEMO is out on June 22nd. The game is supposed to be out on July 12. The release date has been set for a while now and I am pretty sure It will be out on the release date.
