Ex-Wolfpackers take on Stray Bullet

Shadowbane MMO stays alive thanks to new studio formed by former Wolfpack staff; Stray Bullet will be independent developer.

In March, an employee of Wolfpack Studios, Sean "Ashen Temper" Dahlberg, broke the news that parent company Ubisoft was shutting down the subsidiary. A rep from Ubi told GameSpot News the decision was made to "concentrate Ubisoft's development in its larger studios where more resources are available." The closing of Wolfpack, finalized earlier this week, meant that the future of the company's top title, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Shadowbane, was uncertain.

While gamers had wondered how they were going to keep their Shadowbane characters alive and well, Dahlberg wondered how he was going to pay the bills and put food on his table. Both questions were answered in a new post on Dahlberg's blog, which revealed that former Wolfpack members have formed a new studio, Stray Bullet Games, which has been contracted by Ubisoft to maintain Shadowbane.

"From the ashes of Wolfpack Studios, a new company has formed called Stray Bullet Games (SBG)," said Dahlberg. "Unlike Wolfpack, SBG is not a Ubisoft company. Instead it is a third-party development studio. This basically means the studio is, technically, answerable to itself."

According to Dahlberg, the new studio already has plenty of other projects in the works, but SBG will not be doing Shadowbane 2.

"The publishing and intellectual rights [to the Shadowbane franchise] are not owned by Stray Bullet Games and we will, more likely, make an original title."

Dahlberg expects more news and a new company Web site to be made public sometime soon.

It's awesome that these guys were able to keep things going for the game's fans and subscribers. Hopefully it will keep other MMO's from suffering the "world ending fate" before their time.

Also, bravo to Ubisoft for helping with this transition.

Shadowbane has the best PVP bar none. Nothing even comes close. It is still the only mmo with full city building. But most impressively actual roleplaying was the best excuse to PVP because the Lore was amazingly duplicitous. On Mourning server, all of the strongest roleplaying guilds were roleplaying lore based guilds. Interestingly, out of all mmo's yet, SB has the strongest tightest guilds because to not join one means death and dispair.

Shadowbane is not for solo players.
Shadowbane is not for questers.
Shadowbane is not for wimps.
Shadowbane is not for people who like to waste half their life leveling just one toon.

Shadowbane is for tactical PVP.
Shadowbane is for large scale wars with purpose.
Shadowbane is for fast access to endgame content.
Shadowbane is for city building and management.
Shadowbane is for tight social guilds.
Shadowbane is for vigilantes.
Shadowbane is for massive political strugles.
Shadowbane is for micromanagement of character attributes. (tweaking)
Shadowbane is for people who want to be able to kill the person next to them who is being an idiot and not prevented because of some artificial rule like "factions" or "safe zones".
Shadowbane is for roleplayers who think that other players can roleplay better than a prewritten script.

Shadowbane only had 3 weak points, but they were very important weak points that would have killed any other game almost immediately. The fact that Shadowbane did so well despite these 3 weaknesses prove the success of the rest of its features.

1. Unstable
2. Outdated graphics.
3. No quests.

Can you think of any other mmo that would have lasted more than a day with those 3 weaknesses?

Now imagine if SBG makes a game with SB's strengths and none of its weaknesses... yeah, i wet myself too.

Love,

shadowbane was lightyears head of the rest. WOW is great, but personally I thought shadowbane is on par if not better in a few areas.

So they didn't pull the plug after all. And it seems to be free now as well. Still looks like there's nothing in this game for me though. High levels spanking lowbies, macros, people dual logging... Nothing for carebears or role-players who enjoy a good quest once in a while.

Seems whether its MMO or single player, the PC games market is getting more and more "Great game - out next year" and in the next 3-6 months "nothing". For every game announced as "Great!" last year, about 5 more that were announced as "great" last year turned out crap on release.

Whatever angle you look at PC gaming, it don't look good.

They met them halfway. So the 20,000 or so Shadowbane subscribers aren't left high and dry. However, Dear Shadowbane players: it's time to move on dude
