E3 06: Atari cuts prices

Indigo Prophecy, Marc Ecko's Getting Up, rest of publisher's current-gen catalog to sell for $19.99 effective June 1.

LOS ANGELES--While attendees visited Atari's booth at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this week to get a look at games like Test Drive Unlimited and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, the publisher announced that previous installments in those series, along with the bulk of its catalog, would soon be subject to sweeping price cuts.

Starting June 1 at participating retailers, all of Atari's existing PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance games will carry a $19.99 price point as part of the company's new GamersFirst program. The publisher's PC titles are also included in the program--with the exception of the recently released massively multiplayer game Dungeons & Dragons Online--and will be available for download at the new price point from Valve Software (presumably through its Steam service) and Direct2Drive.

20.00 bucks is 20.00 bucks does'nt mean the game sucks or that the game is great. When in doubt buy USED GAMES!!!!. As far as Atari going under WHO CARES!!! There will always be crappy games and other companies biting the dust.

Like I said in atleast 3 different comments. It does not make any differnce who buys the Atari name! The last thing any struggling videogame company that make crap games should do is buy the name of an even worse crap game company. All they end up doing is increasing their persona of crappiness . You couldn't pay me 50 bucks to be associated with Atari right now!

Very nice, I think that they want all their stock out so they can make some profit with those games and start working on the next-gen platforms.

To the poster that asked why Indigo Prophecy was called Fahrenheit in Europe, it was suppose to be called Fahrenheit in the US, but a copyright issue was cause for a name change. And the European version is better, because of less censorship. But it did cost me a few extra bucks, but I get a censor free version of the PC game and it was on DVD to boot.

Indigo Prophecy was a very bad game. sure, it was novel, but the story was ridiculous and the gameplay was repetitive.

The Atari that started the videogame revolution died (finally) after the Jaguar flopped way back in the early 90s. This "Atari" is the US division of Infogrames and has no relationship to the original Atari. The French company bought the name from Hasbro in a fire sale, and used it because the name had some recognition plus the name "Infogrames" was despised outside of Europe.

For those of you wishing that Atari would just fold, that will just push us that much closer to a Microsoft stranglehold on gaming, where you only have Xbox 360 and Vista, and the price of games will be cheap at $60.

  • sidious

    Posted May 15, 2006 9:25 am GMT

Yeah, Indigo Prophecy was a good little game... and way worth you $20, no doubt... Does this mean the new Driver is gonna be $20 (didn't Atari put that out??)

  • skemaal

Proves once again that sales are going down everywhere in the business. A 19.99$ psychological price point should bring sales up a bit - unit wise - . Should also help a little bit with illegal copies. In any case, 2006 is going to be a bad year for game sales. Time for some new innovations instead for the gazillionth shooter, WWII game and strategy game.

Thank god for Pokemon. OK OK I`M JUST KIDDING LOL!

Atari needs to do something for these games to sell.

  • greatcamel

    Posted May 15, 2006 5:30 am GMT

It needs more main stream games, I don't see why I would want to play "getting up"

  • aabii

    Posted May 14, 2006 10:35 pm GMT

D&D online is not included, that was an exception stated in the article. Indigo prophecy looked like a great one though for $20...

Not a bad idea after all.
19.99 is way better than 39.99...
    HAHA.
