E3 06: Blizzard confirms multiple games in the works

Console release for new titles being considered, PS3 and Xbox 360 being examined as possible platforms.

LOS ANGELES--Despite the overwhelming worldwide success of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment is still looking beyond the franchise to other opportunities.

When asked by GameSpot if the Warcraft universe was all that's left for the company to mine, chief operating officer Paul Sams said, "No. Absolutely not. We have multiple games in development, currently, they are just not announced...to the outside world--and the reality of it is--we are laser focused on what is the thing right then, but there's a ton of additional focus being put toward these other [games] that are in development."

Reflecting on the existing franchises, Sams emphasized, "World of Warcraft and the Warcraft franchise is not the last and the only franchise we are going to operate within. We have two other very, very key franchises to our company's history and to our company's future success. The Diablo and Starcraft franchises are of the utmost importance to us as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new franchise from us at some time in the future; there's certainly a desire to do so."

A PR rep later expanded on Sams' statement, clarifying that not only were there "multiple games" in development, but that Blizzard was considering "multiple platforms" for those titles. The spokesperson confirmed that the company was looking at both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but that a decision as to which platform might get the nod had not been made.

Diablo 3 in my opinion would be cool, but if anyone can remember from the end of D2: LOD, it pretty much ended right then and there. Im not going to give anything away though for those who have not beaten it or not played it and want to play it. A Starcraft 2 would work very nicely. Starcraft: BOW left off wanting a either a new expansion or a new game. Since there wasn't an expansion that came out after BOW, then a new game must be in works for Starcraft. And anyways if they made another Diablo game it would have come out last year, the 10th anniversary of the Diablo universe. Next year is 2008 as we all know, and the Starcraft universe started in 1998. So 10th anniversary of it could mean Starcraft 2 is coming our way. But we don't know anything yet until Blizzard decides to open its door and release what is in store for us.

The recently posted Blizzard yanks staff from console project seems to throw some cold water on the console dream.

I'm guessing the sequence of their release would be Diablo 3 ---> Starcraft 2 or something ----> then Warcraft 4 or something.... lol

hay that would be sweet to see on the wii, lets face it on the 360 or ps3 you either have to buy a mouse-keyboard attachment or use the game pad, and that would totally suck, besides the wii wouldnt need that, plus it has plenty of graphical power to handle a the game. even this generation of consoles have barely enough horsepower to handle the game (not very smoothly, but still) any of the next gen consoles could handle with no difficulty, the wii may not be as powerful as the ps3 but its not going that much of a difference, except for HD, but if you can afford a HD tv, you can afford to sup-up a PC to play wow on thats. so bring on the wii version, all the better for us, and blizzard.

After the diabacles of WoW (bugs, lack of customer support, etc...), I am no longer a Blizzard customer.

If you want the goodness of Blizzard of the past, go pickup Hellgate: London when it comes out, from the ex-developers of games such as Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3, whom left Blizzard because of many issues and the lack of very important things that customers expect from their games today.

1 1/2 thumbs down for Blizzard.

And they really should come out with a DIablo game or Warcraft game before anyother Starcraft. I saw a post on another site and what this guy said was true.
"I hope Starcraft gets put on the bottom of the to-do list after Ghost comes out. Sorry for SC fans, but I never got into that series. It just seemed to me like Warcraft dressed up in a sci-fi theme. And all Blizzard can really do is leech ideas from Age of Mythology and C&C Generals (the new players on the block). It would almost be a waste of development time to just create a clone of AoM or C&C:G. They should focus on Diablo, the only decent action RPG. They've got a stranglehold on that genre and any game that has its content sold on EBay is a sure success. Diablo 3 should be a priority. It would be like having a money tree in your back yard and forgetting to water it enough."

it will take at least 2 years before blizzard publishes anything except the wow expansion. my money are on starcraft 2 to be published next. diablo 3 will take at least 5 years, because on diablo 2 the story ends and they have to think of something REALLY GOOD to continue.

even if they are creating an entirely new franchise, I still can't wait to see what blizzard does next. As far as i know, they haven't had anything but "game of the year" caliber releases since the early/mid 90's. That kind of legacy makes for shivers of anticipation indeed.

what, somone acually belived in the world of starcraft thing? i found it to be a pretty nicly done april 1st, but i never belived in it.

i wouldn't deem a "world of starcraft" 100% impossible, but almost, i cant really specify why, but dont thing it would work very well.

Starcraft 2 would be great. I still play Starcraft now and then, always fun. As for World of StarCraft lol...that was an April fools joke...which I have to admit caught me for the day hehe. Still it would be an interesting concept if Blizzard decides to expand on that franchise. Nothing for sure though with what seems to be the demise of Starcraft: Ghost

If WoW was on 360, those people would be screwed by PC guys...unless of course....the PC players also own 360s!!...like me.

I sure as hell don't know how any console can control most of blizzards games and their huge interfaces unless they connect a keyboard and mouse via USB.

i personally would like to see these guys return to RTS or RPG because both of those genres have evolved greatly since their last games hit. i don't know if they would put out a Age of empires 3 tipe game or a revolutionary Dawn of War/rise of nations, type game. as for RPG's look at oblibion, how could they match it. well i could think of a few minor improvements but would those be 50 dollars worth of improvements.

as long as monthly fees soround mmo's it will keep the poor gamers away, like myself, i'm not really poor, just frugle, and cuffing up 10 a month feels like a ball and chain tide to your ankle keeping you dedicated to that game because other wise you are wasting the money. i hate that feeling and for that reason alone i could never play Most MMO's excluding guildwars.

chernnunos- I'm sure the PC developers and MS hold your opinion in VERY, VERY, high regard and will cease making online games for consoles immediately! Now wake up and start worrying about things you actually CAN control. Consoles should go as far as they can in gaming in all facets. I'm actually excited to see what the X360 can do.

They're talking about Ghost, I also heard something about them recording music for Diablo III, but that might have just been a rumor, when ghost was cancelled I emailed them though whatever address is on their website, they said they decided to can the Xbox and Ps2 versions so they can release it on next-gen consoles.

Multiple games will be lucky to become a game based on what they did with Ghost. I really wanted to play that game to see how they handle a first person game and based on the results...they suck.

Diablo 3. Why: Blizzard is still boasting high Battle.net numbers in recent press releases. Worldwide users in the 1.5 mill range, sustained. That's impressive--whether you like the B.net or not. I can absolutely envision Blizzard going after Guild Wars with a kick arse action MMO-style Diablo 3 on a new persistent character split-off of Battle.net. And obviously, free to play. With Microsoft allowing back-end servers to connect to Live, a Battle.net shard on Live is totally feasible too. It's "Live Everywhere!" Still love me some GW though. Factions was worth the money.
