E3 06: PSPs to answer Call of Duty 3

Activision's WWII first-person shooter headed to Sony's portable in addition to next-gen consoles.

LOS ANGELES--In a post-earnings conference call last week, Activision chairman and CEO Bobby Kotick gave investors a few hints at the next Call of Duty game. He said it was set to arrive in the company's third quarter of the fiscal year (October 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006), and that it is "not a PC product, it's a console product, and it's all next-gen."

Kotick neglected to mention that it's coming to the handheld market, as well. Activision's official release list has "Call of Duty 3 PSP" for the PlayStation Portable for fall 2006. Activision isn't showing the game at this year's E3, and the only other information on the spreadsheet is that it's a "first-person action game" (the same designation as the console Call of Duty games) and carries a $49.99 price tag.

Activision representatives were cagey about what they could and couldn't say regarding the game, but one did confirm a few facts for GameSpot. The odd "Call of Duty 3 PSP" name is just a working title, it will not be a port of the console editions of Call of Duty 3, and Infinity Ward is not handling the game's development.

Check back with GameSpot for more news on the game as it becomes available.

Very impressive? There's not a single screenshot of it, yet!
Nobody cares if you're not a portable person, LordGamer0001.

I think it will be better on the consoles because it w*ould be really hard to control with only 1 analog stick, should be very interesting though. If it was good, I'd buy it

The lock on from Socom would be useful too... not played it, but if it's smarter than GTA's (boo) lockon then it'll be fine.

They'll probably consider a 3rd person view a la Killzone, GTA or 50 Cent Bulletproof.

Interesting... if it comes out that is. Battlefield Modern Combat, Brothers In Arms were both FPS's which were scheduled for release in Q2, but still no sign of them yet.

Its a continuation of the console series, which includes Finest Hour and Big Red One, not the one that started on the PC. That's why it's only coming out on consoles. duh

I hope the control mechanics are similar to SOCOM for the PSP. Even though it uses a "Lock on" targeting system, it is very well executed and makes up for the lack of a second analog stick. What I really want to see on the PSP is UT2007!!!

Well, if in their godliness decide to make everyone buy a console, frak em, i will buy a console, mod it and download the game for free. I have spent a fortune on the pc, and for them to decide it is console only, means they are a bunch of wannabee's

SOCOM on the PSP is quite fun. They switched to a LOCKON concept instead of aiming. The more careful you are about moving, the better you measure your distance, these things determine how quickly the auto-lockon handles. At any time you can press a button for manual aim using the analog nub for headshots. It works very smoothly. If EA is smart they will do the same thing. If they don't well then screw them because it won't be fun...

anyone who has ever tried to play an FPS (all 2 of them) on the psp knows that without 2 control sticks, it is almost impossible and just a pain to try to play. I love CoD but unless there is something truly magical here, this will definatly be a pass. Sorry Ward.

Why oh WHY are they not getting Infinity WArd to do this. Giving it Infinity Wards COD title won't make the game good. It will stick SUCK. It'll just make people realize that BOTH COD series suck now and not just the one with subtitles.
