E3 06: Resident Evil Wii-bound

Capcom's zombie-slaying series is in development for Nintendo's next console; controller's functions will be incorporated into game.

LOS ANGELES--Resident Evil 4, one of 2005's most acclaimed games and recipient of several Game of the Year awards, was first released on Nintendo's GameCube in January. The Cube seemed an odd choice of platform for the mature content in the game, but publisher Capcom released it as an exclusive for the system before finally porting it to the PlayStation 2 in October.

When Resident Evil 5 was announced in mid-2005, Capcom revealed that it was headed for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360--no Nintendo platform was in sight.

News out of Japan today sheds some light on the Nintendo snub, as Capcom announced that a Resident Evil game is currently in development for the Wii.

The title will be "a new game in the Resident Evil franchise" that combines the series' trademarks with "the revolutionary control system of the Wii." No further details about the game were announced.

The Wii game isn't necessarily Resident Evil 5. Given that Resident Evil is one of its biggest franchises, Capcom does have a penchant for reworking existing RE games and creating spin-offs.

Please, all that I ask is it doesn't have the same horribly broken controls that Red Steel has.

no, only the umbrella chronicles game will be released for the wii, and re5 for the ps 3 and x 360, since the fifth installment in the series will be pointing to a whole new and outstanding graphical detail. Since the wii can't keep up with the graphical potencial of the other two consoles, the revolutionary gameplay mode might save umbrela chronicles from a total-letdown emotion, since this game will provide the whole story of the 4 previous games and connect them to fit into a fantastic storyline.

Guys, don't worry. I have a prediction here on the idea that Capcom is doing everything EXCEPT snubbing Nintendo.
IGN was saying Resident Evil 5 is going to have internet features for the 360 and PS3. Since the Wii's internet feature isn't really up and running yet, I predict that Capcom will port RE5 over to Wii (the light side) once it is up, like when RE4 went over to the dark side (PS2). So, the Wii game will prolly have more features. Plus, it'll doubtlessly use the Umbrella Chronicles controller layout, which is supposed to be like RE4. Therefore, we'll get both games, while PS3 and 360 will only get one! Again, this is only a (realistic) prediction, but if it's true, CAPCOM, I LOVE YOU!

this is bullcrap! this is a total snub! like when final fantasy crystal chronicles showed up on nintendo. sure it was a great game but ppl wanted to play the actual game that made it famous. its like capcom is throwing us a bone to be nice. which is worse from them cuz they at one point obviously had faith in nintendo with resident evil 4. TOTAL crap.

I hope this is good. Resident evil 4 on ps2 was the best game i've played :]

I think they should make it like resi 4, but you walk with the nunchuk and hold z to go into the over the shoulder aim mode, aim with the wii remote, shoot with b, and you can hack them by holding c and hacking with the wii remote. Also, A is used for all the usual crap, like opening doors and picking stuff up.

    Agree?

  • YOJIMBO_X

    Posted Jan 3, 2007 9:51 am PT

This is gonna be amazing, and supposedly it's going to link where the first 4 games ended (not CV(x), i mean 0) and the new resi 4 side began. If this uses the Wii controller properly i think i'll be using the knife a bit more...yeah!! Right in the eye!!

On the speculation of "it probably wouldn't be very good on the Wii" -- i specifically remember all the spin-offs and other RE games for "other" systems not being "very good" -- albeit, RE:CV(X).

Why can't they just put RE 5 on Wii, maxequalsice? Because it probably wouldn't be very good on the Wii.

  • GrandMasterLuis

    Posted Dec 20, 2006 6:00 pm PT

I think this won't be a spin-off... I have a strong feeling it may be a parallel story to RE5 to take full advantage of the Wii's controls... same characters (except the main character) and similar environments (maybe same ones, but different routes) might make both games work together a lot better than one might think.

It could turn into something REALLY good... but then again, it may just be Resident Evil: Outbreak 3.

    Posted Dec 17, 2006 8:56 pm PT

Why can't they just put RE 5 on Wii, I want to play a new RE game not a remix of old ones. Although i'd like to use the Wii's controls in a new RE game I'll just have to get RE 5 for 360 and maybe check this one out cause I'm not exactly sure what this one is trying to do. I'd like a more detailed explanation...

After the horrific chainsaw controller this could be a chance for capcom to get us back into the chainsaw mood. Gears of War has great chainsaw action but it does have a lot of bugs in XBL. But, imagine using the wiimote as a chainsaw. This should also be live.

Didnt yall hear its going to patch up of how the Umbrella corp is associated with Resident Evil 4 its going to have all the games remade in it and you get.
To play as Hunk and Albert wisker but you have to un-lock them first
but its not going to have code:veronica in it. Famitsu, a Japanese game-related magazine, has reported on Umbrella Chronicles, providing the following information.

The game consists of four "chapters", set in Resident Evil's mansion, Resident Evil 2's Raccoon Police Department, Resident Evil 3's city areas and Resident Evil 4's village (plus surrounding areas). Each chapter has two characters to choose from. Resident Evil's Mansion has Jill and Chris as selectable characters. Resident Evil 2's RPD has Leon and Claire. Resident Evil 3's city areas has Jill and Carlos. Resident Evil 4's village has Leon and Ada. Unlockable characters are said to include Rebecca Chambers, HUNK and Albert Wesker. All characters will have melee attacks. To encourage replayablility, each character will have strengths and weaknesses, similar to how in the Mercenaries minigame in Resident Evil 4, Ada had the least health, and Krauser was the slowest for example. Each character has a unique set of weapons, but players may only carry two weapons at any one time. You will be able to find several new weapons during each stage, which appear to be associated to that particular stage. For example, in the Resident Evil chapter, Richard's shotgun can be unlocked, whilst in Resident Evil 2, one can unlock the Desert Eagle gun, and in Resident Evil 4 's chapter, one can unlock the Chicago typewriter. Similar to Devil May Cry 3, after each chapter you can save your data and any new weapons attained will be available for use in Arcade Mode, which will be like a bigger version of the Mercenaries minigame of Resident Evil 4 Scenario Mode will feature a large number of in-game cutscenes. New content, not in the games that the chapters were based on, will be added. The primary goal of this will be to link Resident Evil 4, and the Umbrella Corporation's status in it, more closely with the rest of the series. ~Cyber Demon

If it does take place in the mansion it would be cool if it was from another chatarcters perspective like the guy everyone loves to hate Wesker or even Barry and what they did in the mansion when they weren't with Jill or Chris.

Looks like the Wii will get the most attention for the next RE because of its unique control system, even if the graphics may look a notch lower in lvl, ods are the Wii version will be the favorite. The Wii gives faster development time, so they they will have more time to play with making the game look good and play good, im sure the end result will have critics dieing to have a go at the Wii version of RE.
