E3 06: Nintendo reveals Wii classic controller

Nintendo gives the Wii a "classic" gamepad for virtual console games.

Nintendo included an image of a new Wii controller hidden within a package of hardware screenshots available for download on the Nintendo press site. The image titled "Wii_classic_0501" shows a gamepad-shaped controller with a Wii logo front and center.

The "classic" file name suggests that the controller will be used for classic Nintendo games that use a traditional gamepad interface.

The controller is reminiscent of a Super Nintendo gamepad with its oval shape, D pad, and x, y, a, and b buttons set in a familiar diamond formation. The controller also features what appear to be four buttons along the top of the controller. The classic controller face also has two analog sticks, which are necessary to maintain GameCube compatibility.

    Hmm.. I think the right analog stick replaces the C-buttons for N64..As I recall, the N64 only had a single analog stick..hmm..

    I don't know if that button arrangement will be comfortable for playing N64 games. N64 games depend too much on c buttons but if you use abxy buttons as C buttons... there are missing buttons for N64 playability.

    Does the d-pad on this thing feel too stiff to anyone else? I dunno, maybe i just need to break this thing in more.

    Well seeing how RE4 is a gamecube game it only seems logical that it would require the Gamecube controller... but hey thats just me.

    yeah im glad super smash is using the conventional controller... Wii mote just isnt right for fighting games i think

    Dude Nintendo is rockin it with this console. If anyone complains about the controller they should STFU cause they have more than 3 dif. controllers ofr this system. the normal Wii controller (with nunchuck), you can plug in your Gamecube controller to use, the classic controller, the Zapper, and i heard that tere will be a Gamecube Shell for the Wii remote. so hah! i love Nintendo.

    Wow this is so cool it's all 3 consoles controolers in 1 and it still looks great. It is a snes controller shape with all the buttins of the gamecube controller

    I like the classic design.. it's simple, yes.. but it does look functional. Plus, it looks like it would feel comfortable using it.

    I guess 3-way ports, and third parties that don't want to use the wiimote can come back now.

    I think what Nintendo ment by calling the file "Wii_classic_0501" was not because it was gonna be for classic gaming but just to call it a classical controller.

    Naw if you ever tried the Classic looking controller of snes for ps2 looks the same but its hard to grip hopefully this one has a little more depth but yeah it look good way to step up nintendo!

    Nintendo has made a console that can be played all the past consoles including a mega-original sensor control and now this. Being able to use also the gamecube controls this console can be used with 3 diferent controls, the wiimote, the gamecube control and now this! and that without counting the extras that you can plug into the wiimote.

    I am happy and I hope that people can understand world wide-ly that Sony and Microsoft are just there for your money, and yes I know that still you can have your fun with their good games and systems but that Nintendo is there for you and not like them.

    I am going to get Wii That is for sure! PS3 will be a must also with games like FFXIII hehehehehe but yea I recon that it can wait another 2 or 3 years

    I knew there would be a normal controller. My only hope left is you will be able to use it instead in all games, as in some cases I feel like I might as well go and do the thing for real. This is esspically true if fifa release a soccer game. Unless you strap it to your leg....

    Nintendo fanboy just give up u know that the Wii is ridiculous in front of the PS3 so just don't try to squeeze ur self in this next-gen and don't try to compare it to the PS3, cause Wii is not next-gen at all. btw, why didn't Nintendo just come up with the same controller for the GameCube? cause obviously it's the same console in terms of Graphics, features and games. If Nintendo really cares about their fans then they would just keep the GC and try to come up with a way how to use the new controller with it. And not have u spend an extra 250 or 300$ to buy the same thing just with a new controller.

    O god thank you nintendo I thought the tv remote controller for the wii was stupid, i like classic but the remote be ok too. why did they change the name revolution? wii is a retarded name, revolution was awesome.
