E3 06: GameCube's 2006 lineup still strong

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess leads the list, with Baten Kaitos Origins, Super Paper Mario, and DK Bongo Blast rounding out the key first-party games.

LOS ANGELES--Though Wii and DS got most of the love at Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference today, the GameCube is still a contender. Its replacement, the Wii, won't even arrive until an as-yet-undisclosed date sometime in the fourth quarter of 2006, so there's still plenty of time to rack up more hours on the GameCube. Today, Nintendo released a partial list of games currently in development for its current-gen console, showing a healthy pipeline of new releases that extends right up to--and past--the Wii launch.

See below for an alphabetical list of publishers and their games, as well as planned launch dates where available.

Baten Kaitos Origins and Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 are the games I´m waiting for. I would like to see Battle Stadium: D.O.N around here too, but guess I´m not...

Yay! I cant wait for the new Super Paper Mario! The first two rocked! And according to the screen shots, you get play as peach and bowser again, but it sorta looks like an actual stage. Sorta odd for princess peach, yet fun!

I was gladly impressed with this announcement. I thought that there wouldn't be more games for the GCN but I think that the console will have more life in it. Thank you very much Nintendo!!!

The gamecube is a huge flop. Nintendo should let it die . Sony owns Nintendo...

From what I'm reading elsewhere, say what you will about SpongeBob, but it's supposed to be a hilarious-fun game to play. I'll at least give it a look based on that, and I've never touched a SB game prior as they seem too juvenile for my tastes.

baten kaitos will be super dupe, and to those who says "kiddy games" baten kaitos is like Final Fantasy, so if your saying baten kaitos 2 is a kiddy game why do you buy Final Fantasy games on the PS2, thats shows how ignorant most of u are.

yes they sell more GameCubes than 360s in some territories. so then the 360 must be deader, right ?

Its funny how a lot of the games being released on the Gamecube that are also released on PS2 are only considered kiddy games on the Gamecube and not on the PS2.

Ah, well I can't say I agree with you, dcgames. I play quite a few types of games, and I'm not really biased against any. I'm playing through Paper Mario right now actually as I type this. I'm a huge Halo player, going through Oblivion on my PC at the moment, and constantly playing Tetris DS. I'm a huge FPS fan, and I think it's an ignorant comment to say that it involves no thinking to play. There are plenty of strategies and such that are needed to be better in them. It's not just random shooting. Although I am male, I'd like to point out that I'm not into gore, I don't own a gun, and violence isn't something I consider a hobby.

So while shooters may not be your type of game, they're not just for people obsessed with death and violence and such. I'm a fan of almost all games, and the ones that I'm not a fan of, I try not to bash either.

It was nice to play a game like PMTYD and not have to kill anyone or blow someone's head off. FPS and the like (which seem to be the brunt of XBOX games) are totally brainless games without any thinking involved; you just mash the trigger and shoot. Wow. That's hard. Definitely this appeals to a large percentage of "types" (mostly male) who get off on this kind of thing. Me I prefer to play a game that involves some thinking in an environment that isn't the Blitz. So if that's a "kiddy" game so be it.

The only good games on that list are Baten Kaitos Origins, Twilight Princess, and Super Paper Mario. The rest are all either sports or kids games that are going to be available on other consoles as well.

Woah woah, did you guys see the video for Super Paper Mario? It's like a 2D platformer, not an RPG. It looks really good actually.

Super Paper Mario! Sweet! The first two Paper Marios were most excellent adventures.

Never played Tales of Symphonia either. I've got all consoles, a PC, and low amounts of time, but lately I've had a surplus, so I'm looking to go back through and play the games I missed.

  • KevComesRipping

    Posted May 9, 2006 4:13 pm PT

Baten Kaitos wasn't as entertaining as Tales of Symphonia if you ask me, but if you've already played that, BK should be pretty cheap by now, serotonin0

Ooooo Super Paper Mario, I'm stoked, they need to make a Paper Luigi for the DS if you ask me, many folding, twisting, turning actions you could do with the stylus

I'm looking forward to Super Paper Mario. I'm playing the first GCN version of Paper Mario right now actually. Besides that, not much on the list I'm excited for. I will be buying Zelda, but now that it's on both consoles, I'll be buying the Wii version. Was Baten Kaitos good? I was thinking about trying it out.

Twilight Princess was going to be the last GC title that i would buy, but now that I know it'll come out in the Wii too, Twillight Princess will be my first Wii title

"Strong" my ass. Gamecube is almost dead. Only game I'm looking forward to is Twilight Princess and that game isn't coming out 'till Q4 2006 which could very well be December 2006. It's a damn shame what happened to this console. I have all three current gen consoles and two of them are practically dead.

  • Sepewrath

Its funny how people dont understand when they talk about how many kids games the GC has playstaion has the most of all the systems since they get pretty much every game that nintendo gets and many more of those kiddy games since they get all the support from 3rd party's.

  • troakun

    Posted May 9, 2006 3:57 pm PT

Super Paper Mario is the only game I'm looking forward too but glad to see GC still going strong. Maybe it won't have quite the lifespan of PS1 but it has some juice left.

    Posted May 9, 2006 2:36 pm PT

I'm pretty mixed when it comes to the "kiddy" game issue. The reason most companies don't release high profile, more mature games on the GC is because the sales are terrible. Well people, the same thing works in reverse for Sony. Despite having 100mil plus systems out there, those same titles GC drowns in don't sell squat on the PS2. When big budget titles fall short of goals, it has to be made up somewhere. But remember, the GC as a system is on it's way out as the Wii is backwards compatible. I expect a price drop and influx of "Kiddy" games either in the mid summer (gotta catch'em all, out of school) or late fall.

I guess I'm the only one excited about Super Paper Mario. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was an excellent game and was in my top 3 RPG's for this console generation (I own all 3 systems).

hmm i know there's at least one mistake in the release dates, splinter cell has been canceled for current gen systems. At least thats what they reported a couple day's ago, doubt anythings changed.
