E3 06: Super Mario Galaxy leads first wave of Wii games

Key Wii games unveiled today also include Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Fire Emblem, and third-party titles.

LOS ANGELES--There was a lot of excitement for Nintendo's pre-Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference today, and the company did not disappoint. Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo's EVP of sales and marketing walked the enthusiastic audience through the company's next-gen plans, as well as its upcoming GameCube and Nintendo DS games.

First-party titles--especially Nintendo's classic franchises--claimed the lion's share of the spotlight. Nintendo fans will be particularly excited about Super Mario Galaxy (working title), which is a Mario platformer for the Wii, and the revelation that Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be a Wii launch title. In fact, Twilight Princess will get two launches: a GameCube version will hit shelves on the same day as the Wii version.

Also in development now are other follow-ups to classic series, including Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Fire Emblem, WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Nintendo is working on a number of all-new titles, announced for the first time today:

-Disaster: Day of Crisis is an action game where the player tries to recapture a hijacked nuclear weapon against a backdrop of natural catastrophes, including floods, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.

-Excite Truck is an arcade racer that features trucks getting big air in the vein of the NES classic Excitebike.

-Project H.A.M.M.E.R. is an action adventure game in which the player will use both the nunchaku controller and the Wii remote to control a cyborg armed with an immense hammer.

-Wii Sports is a sports game that incorporates golf, tennis, and baseball. According to Iwata's comments during the Nintendo press conference, the game is designed to allow new gamers to compete on an even footing with experienced gamers.

All told, Nintendo says that when the E3 show floor opens here tomorrow, 27 Wii games will be playable. That includes both first-party and third-party titles, and Nintendo has released an extensive list of third-party Wii titles now in development. Wait...didn't Nintendo say that they were going to "try to shed their kiddie image with the Wii"? ...half of those titles are games like Digimon and Disney crap...I saw maybe 5 or 6 games that could possibly get a "T" or higher.

Super Smash Bros Brawl is a good-enough reason to buy this system in and of itself, as well as MP3. Add in all the other great games like Red Steel, Super Mario Galaxy, and Twilight Princess, and the Wii is going to be the best thing ever!

Nintendo's best chance for besting the PS3 launch would be to make sure that Metroid Prime 3 is available day 1. How could Sony compete with Nintendo's top of the line titles all at once?

  • gtimandan

    Posted May 10, 2006 7:26 am GMT

Wow, what a playable lineup! Isn't that sheer volume of pre-launch PLAYABLES unheard of?! 27!

And all of those great games in development...some wicked gems in there, too...Call of Duty 3, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Metal Slug, Super Monkey Ball, Bust-A-Move, Bomberman, Medal of Honor, Dragonball Z, tons more, plus whatever Nintendo has up their sleeve...this is hella sweet!

This surely shows how promising the system and its controller is given the way the developers & publishers have embraced it [and should serve as an example to anyone that had doubts about the system], ultimate graphics be damned.

I was 60% sure I was going to buy a Wii at launch vs a PS3. I'm now 100% sure I'm going Wii [Wheeeeeeeeeee!] out of the gate

I'll buy all 4 system ps3, wii, xbox360, laptop gaming from dell. Wii is crap cuz there is no hardcore gamer but still has one a few more for mature resident evil, call of the duty 3... hmm not bad game. I'm already adult single Well I have family members got huge a lot kids. I'd rather buy mature and adult high rating gamer. I deal with them age 4-14 low rating game I play them. (I don't want tell them I'm boring). Nice job I love nintendo see ya

Jaleco should bring back the Bases Loaded series. I definitely think it would fit well on the Rev. Plus, since it never have real players, the 2K's exclusive MLB contract wouldn't affect it.

Nintendo has realized they aren't a company to compete in the same kind of 'market' as Sony or Microsoft, no offense to them. I actually tip my hat off to them more than Sony or Microsoft; Nintendo has continually found ways to build a gaming niche that no one competes with. Even with the release of the PSP the DS and PSP are completely different styles of handhelds. Because of Nintendo's unique style (well, and mario) it will never die.
