E3 06: THQ whacking Sopranos on 360, PS2

New crime game based on popular HBO mob saga shipping in Q4 2006; will feature original storyline overseen by show creator David Chase.

THQ is bringing TV's favorite mafia family to the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2. The company today announced a game based on the hit HBO series The Sopranos, which will feature the likeness and voice of star James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano. The storyline is also being developed with the input of the show's creator, David Chase.

The game itself will put you in control of the illegitimate son of Sal "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero, played by Vincent Pastore on the show. As a mob war brews between New Jersey's Sopranos and a rival Philadelphia family, you must take on jobs and earn the respect of Tony Soprano. This involves earning money on collections, protecting your turf through intimidation, and moving up in the ranks of the organization.

The game will feature familiar locations such as the Bada Bing! strip joint and Nuovo Vesuvio's and Satriale's restaurants. Missions will be handed down from recurring characters besides Tony, such as Paulie Walnuts (played by Tony Sirico on the show), Silvio (Steve Van Zandt), and Christopher (Michael Imperioli). However, THQ did not name any specific actors other than Gandolfini, saying only that there will be "key members of the all-star cast who will lend their voices and likenesses to the game."

The Sopranos is being developed by 7 Studios, who brought the Fantastic Four game to consoles. It is currently set to ship this coming holiday season, and, given its TV-MA-rated source material, will almost certainly be rated M for Mature.

This games' 360 version has been canceled, but the PS2 version is still going to come.

    Has potential to be great,

And I dont think it will suck, because generally THQ i think lately has been doing better than EA's studios, EA is good with out of house developers but tends to screw up inside jobs

on the other hand...THQ even made good wrestling games, the credit they deserve for doing that will put me beyond support for this new game based on a very good Television show, from what it looks like a completely new original storyline from the shows creator in a GTA-like world

I only have one problem, no scheduled PC version, I dont have a PS2 OR a Xbox 360 and dont plan on getting one anytime soon or far in the future. The PC is the only gaming machine one should ever need. Lets hope it gets ported to PC, with the Xbox 360 version's graphics, and translates well unlike most Console to PC ports.

they better not mess this up cause the sopranos is one of my favorite shows......it just doesnt look like it could be a game to me, unless its basically GTA in new jersey. anyway if they get this wrong they're gonna end up like vito.....

Interesting thought, however, seeing as how most games follow that GTA concept when it comes to dealing with the mafia, this really sounds like a remake of GTA 3 with Sopranos instead of anyone else. Let's try to keep an open mind but already, it does not sound right. Still though, it may be a refreshing taste of something new other than get the mission and become the boss. Let's see what happens.

The Sopranos could theoretically make a good game. However, the fact that it is coming from the same one's responsible for the abysmal Fantastic Four Game, and almost all games based on TV shows are crap, I'm not optimistic.

oh god this is terrible. I can image getting escort missions from carmilla for helping get AJ to visit his tutor while she bangs his guidence councelor. This can only get down hill from here on end. Remember the keyword is "The Sopranos is being developed by 7 Studios, who brought the Fantastic Four game to consoles. "

It could be good. I doubt it will, but there is a lot of potential here. The story will be just fine if David Chase is involved. The question is, can THQ handle it and make a game up to par of the show?

Another crappy cash-in licensed game, awesome. The Fantastic Four game sucked, so my expectations for this aren't very high. Also to any of the people saying this will be good because the shows creator is involved obviously didn't play the "Alias" game. That had the shows writers and creators involved and it still sucked.

I'm highly skeptical. The strength of the Sopranos, IMO, is in the periods between the violence--it gives the characters real weight, rather than just treating them like generic mob goons. I don't see how they'll convey that in this game, but there is some hope with David Chase involved.

If they $&*@ it up, I'll never buy another THQ game again. Richard Brown had better step up...

Even if the game is no good, it'll be a rental for any sopranos fan. As supposedly it's supposed to fit in to the story of the show while it's off the air between june-jan.

    Posted May 4, 2006 10:08 am PT

It should be interesting to see how this game ends. It's strange to see that the new trend is to make games from T.V. Series and movies. I hope that the input from the series' creator and the cast can help in delivering a better game.

    WTF!!
The Sopranos is the best show on TV.
Why is HBO letting THQ or anybody for that matter crucify their biggest show?
I guess they haven't played any of their licensed games lately.

The world of the mafia is too dynamic to say that it's as easy as going around intimidating folks just to "earn respect." It'll be interesting to see how this turns out but I'm not getting my hopes up too high

Shouldn't be like CSI games and also atleast they should pay some attention to GAMING part rather than making it a interactive EPISODE

Wow another completely unoriginal game from another publisher who supports nothing but completely unoriginal games. Up next, THQ, EA and Activision fight over the exclusive rights to Law and Order: Wii Gavel. It's based on the Law and Order TV show but exclusive to the NIntendo Wii. You play as a judge and slam the Wii controller just like a gavel!!!!!!
    BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LancerVI

    Posted May 4, 2006 9:06 am PT

This is cool. Sopranos is the BEST SHOW on television, in my opinion. It's the only reason I pay for HBO. As long as Chase is involved in the game it has a chance to be good or better.

This sounds good. Unlike the Godfather game, this game is actually being supported and approved by it's creator David Chase. Francis Ford Coppola was extemely upset when he saw the work that was being done to his franchise by EA (The Godfather). I think that THQ will do a nice job because they're already starting off on the right foot. I've been watching the series since it's creation and own every DVD boxset, this will surely go on the same rack with the rest of my collection.

P.S.- BTW, KindredWarr, this is May.............
