Codemasters signs up Overlord for PC, X360

Triumph Studios' dark fantasy game has been picked up by the UK publisher for a 2007 release.

Codemasters has announced that it will be releasing Overlord, developed by the Dutch company that was responsible for the Age of Wonders strategy games, for the PC and Xbox 360 in 2007.

The action adventure game, based within what is claimed to be a "seriously warped fantasy world," puts players in charge of a figure who has inherited the legacy of the previous evil Overlord. Players can decide how evil a route they want to take in becoming the new Overlord, along with the help of Minions--gremlin-like creatures who will carry out every instruction they are given.

Barry Jafrato, senior VP of brand for Codemasters, said: "Overlord comes loaded with innovative and compelling game mechanics wrapped in a scenario that's played out with plenty of black humour. We're delighted to be working with Triumph on the title, bringing something fresh and original to next-generation gamers."

Yeah, I don't get why people have a problem with pc/xbox releases. If the game is good, who cares? My theory is that people who were brought up with consoles like the Nintendos and Playstations with their exclusive content think that a console with fewer exclusives is somehow lacking. But if you think about it, it makes more sense for a developer to spend a lot of money on making a game if they can sell it for many systems. Of course you sometimes run into problems with some ports being substandard. But since I had an xbox last gen, I never had that problem because everything looked and played better on the xbox anyway. Sure, sometimes PS2 ports didn't look fully optimized for the xbox, but they still looked better than on the PS2.

It all seems like fanboy one-upmanship to me. "Look, my console's better cuz it has more exclusives!" Uh-huh, but are they better than my PC ports? Sometimes, but not enough for me to get a PS2.

Since i am sick to the core of the pc upgrade-with-every-new-phase-of-the-moon gaming scene, i think it is good that there is a console out there, cheaper than any pc yet able to run games almost just as good as any high end pc. (and yes i do ALMOST as good as any pc coming out in the next 6 months.....and not 2 years)....

I also saw it as a boon to be able to play games like doom 3, thief 3, half life 2, doom expansion and other pc ports to the xbox which were ported over REALLY REALLY well, exceeding my expectations....

if youre going to whine about the 360 having pc ports remember that its a console 3-4 times cheaper than a high end pc, able to run games just as good. i see my 360 and xbox as a standalone high end graphics card, which doesnt need upgrading....heck its cheaper than a high end gpu these days anyways....

now only for a modchip....ARRGH cant wait....

You mean x86. There is no x68.

And the architecture be it different, uses the same MS tools. So, from a programming perspective is more similar than different.

    Mmm very very interesting game.

Always been a fan of the dungeon keeper series. The goblins even look like the gold-harvesting imps from DK.

Actually, the Xbox360 infrastructure is completely differente from PC, since the architeture is based on PowerPC instead of x68. The ease of porting is due to the console operating system bearing a close resemblance to windows and the XNA tools.

Codemasters obviously had their reasons for not including the PS3...if they wanted to sell BIG, as you put it, they'd release it on all formats. Maybe the alleged expense of PS3 development put them off...

360 is just a current gen PC.

  • mickel_darmawan

    Posted May 2, 2006 8:55 am PT

They should only give support for PS3 only if they want to sell BIG.

    Atrimus,

The 360 is very similar in architecture to the PC so it is easier to 'translate' PC games to the console. So, yeah, this could be the trend; just like with the original Xbox. The PS3's hardware, so I've heard, is very different to that of the 360/PC so tends to get games exclusive to it. Am getting a little sick of PC-ports on the 360 though...

ease of porting probably. not to mention MS has always attracted more of the PC devs who wanted to branch into consoles. Kind of hard to convince them to give up their roots so they end up crossplatforming all their stuff between PC and 360. as opposed to the Sony who've always had more console-only support. Is it going to be the trend for the next-gen cycle?? It was the trend this current-gen so...its not like it would be a surprise.... you never heard people complain abou how so many of the XBox games were PC/XBox releases??

why is it that in almost every article heading where you see that a game is coming to the PC its also coming to the 360? whereas with most PS3 games, they're usually just exclusive to the system (save for the likes of BIA, Project Offset and a few others which are for multiple platforms)? is this gonna be the trend for the next-generation cycle?

This looks and sounds really interesting, like a 3rd person action strategy Dungeon Keeper/Fable hybrid. I'll be keeping an eye on it during E3. Judging from the screens (posted on other sites) its got a pretty unique style.
