E3 06: Ubisoft recites Assassin's Creed

Publisher promises original game from the studio behind Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia will be the first in a new franchise.

Ubisoft gave visitors to last year's Tokyo Game Show a glimpse at a next-gen action title it referred to as Project Assassins. Today, new details were announced for the project, and the publisher said that it is bringing Assassin's Creed to the PlayStation 3. No mention was made of an early, presumed Xbox 360 version of the game which was on display at Microsoft's X05 event.

Assassin's Creed

Ubisoft is getting medieval on the PS3.

Set in 1191 AD at the height of the Third Crusade for the Holy Land, Assassin's Creed puts players in the silent shoes of Altair and gives them the opportunity "to shape events during this pivotal moment in history." Altair is presumably a member of a group of ruthless assassins whose plan is to bring an end to the bitter struggle by striking out at both warring parties.

The game is being developed by Ubisoft's Montreal studio (creators of hits like Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), and Ubisoft is making some big promises for the project.

"Assassin's Creed is going to push the video game experience as we know it today into an entirely new direction," said the Montreal studio's CEO Yannis Mallat. "Assassin's Creed's compelling theme and storyline experienced through the next-generation console will captivate audiences and affect them on the same level as an epic novel or film."

And just like the Crusades, Assassin's Creed is all set to spawn sequels. The company refers to Assassin's Creed as "the first game" of a new franchise that will make its debut at next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Ubisoft is focusing on creating more new franchises heading forward. The company has said it plans to introduce three new brands to the marketplace every two years, and Assassin's Creed is its latest example of developing new intellectual properties.

Assassin's Creed is expected to arrive in stores in 2007.

incase you didnt notice The Two Thrones was the finale of the PoP trilogy, for the next couple of years anyway. And i think theres a bit more differnce between being an assassin in a city than a platforming prince with no other people around (brilliant though it is)
Looks brilliant though, disappointed abt no mention of a PC version

This is a multi platform title. Remember last years E3 where a lot of games were being advertised for the PS as if they were exclusives? This is going to be a multi-platformer. But whatever the case, it looks promising.

I hope it's nothing like Oblivion, not that Oblivion isn't a great game, but it seems a lot of people are leering towards Oblivion style games and too many isn't good. I have a feeling this wont be like Oblivion and it looks pretty damn sweet from just that trailer alone.

I gotta admit I didn't like Ubisoft in the past but now I can't wait for SC4, I'm playing GRAW for the 360 which is amazing, and I'll be buying Red Steel and this game for sure; Ubi is doing some good work.

    http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/ubisoft/ubisoft-denies-leaked-schedule-160283.php?mail2=true

It's a leaked Ubisoft schedule from last March...given new cred today by the notion that, two months ago, this list mentioned that Ubisoft was publishing Enchanted Arm. Only made official today.

Anyway, it lists "Assassin" for a March 2007 release on X360, PS3 & Rev. Or Wii, now.

"I'd like to see this on the X360 as well UbiSoft. Not everyone wants to drop their life savings on Sony's new machine."

Dude, if you only have $400 in your life savings your in trouble. . . . or 12 years old.

Anyway, I hope they release some more footage at E3. Alot of the trailer looked pre-rendered but there were few shots that looked like gameplay footage.

I like the aproach that Ubisoft has in the gaming industry. They are always one step ahead of many other gaming companies.

Hmmm I'd be more interested in the game if they created a 360 version, not up for buying a PS3 for a while yet.
