PSP Firmware v2.70 released worldwide

New hardware update for Sony's handheld adds support for AAC audio, Macromedia Flash, podcasts, and LocationFree TV.

Sony has released new firmware for its PlayStation Portable in North America, Europe, and Japan. The Version 2.70 upgrade is available for download from www.yourpsp.com and offers new features such as the ability to view Flash content, an RSS reader that incorporates audio files, and AAC audio support. The update also supports Sony's LocationFree TV, which is currently available in Japan and the US and will be released in Europe this May.

The Flash update means that users can now view Web pages with interactive and multimedia content such as video. The option needs to be turned on in the system's web browser in order to function. However, it only supports Flash 6, and does not support all the features.

The PSP can now use the integrated RSS reader to play audio files, a system more commonly known as podcasting. You can also download these audio files to the Memory Stick to listen to later.

The v2.70 upgrade adds AAC audio support to the system's music player. AAC is the preferred method used by Apple's iTunes software when ripping CDs, and it typically offers better sound quality than MP3s at the same bitrate.

Sony's final update is support for LocationFree TV, which transmits television and video signals from a home computer over the internet. The signals can then be picked up via the PSP over a wireless network. The PSP console will be able to access live and prerecorded TV, in addition to setting schedules from a remote location.

Head over to Sony's PSP sites for North America, Europe, and Japan to download the update.

one problem most of the flash sites i want to go wont load cause the psp says out of memeory. damn it sony let it cash to my mem stick cause i have 1gig or the not enough space crap. its annoying after wating 6 months for a flash support what do we get that much out of it. i dont care about some gps crap, i care about what is functional to the user like listen to music while browsing web, music while looking at pics, and the psp supportting drm wma files too would be a lovely thing. I dont care about battery life, who doesnt have a charger, car charger, usb cable charger, or a charging case and some like me have a second battery. Its nice update except that alot the flash sites wont load.

  • Black_Sage89

    Posted Apr 25, 2006 11:32 am GMT

I mean sure, games will get to a point where we can only play them on a higher version (of course naturally there are ways around this) so we might have to upgrade eventually, but not to this. Give us something COOL!

Firmware 1.50 FTW. Portable SNES is WAY better then anything in this update. Keep trying Sony, I mean if you want to stop all us homebrewers, release a firmware worthy of us actually upgrading to.

You have to admit, the updating process is very easy--going directly from the PSP to the server I mean. It was very easy to get working with a wireless router, and these updates have never been difficult to fetch or install. Anxious to see how the machine handles (or doesn't?) the zillions of Flash games available out there. Hopefully Flash doesn't brick millions of PSPs with a Flash-based malware. Should buy Daxter as well; purportedly excellent.

I downloaded it already and I'm looking forward to see how you can use Flash in your PSP: It was also great to see that Sony launched the firmware for all the three major markets worldwide.
