$20 PS2 GTA: LCS due 6/6/06

Console version of Tony Cipriani's mafia mix-ups heads to North American PlayStation 2s June 6 for $19.99, Europe June 9.

The day of release for a new installment of Grand Theft Auto for the PlayStation 2 has become synonymous with "sick" days, $50 out of the wallet, and late October. Taking advantage of its popularity and the holiday season, Rockstar Games has always sent each edition of its flagship franchise to stores just before November and has never found a reason to debut the games for less than half a Benjamin.

That's all about to change for the controversial game, as Rockstar today announced that Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories will be available for the PlayStation 2 on June 6 for an MSRP of $19.99. The game will come to Europe on June 9 for 29.99 euros ($37) or 19.99 GBP ($35).

Though this isn't the debut of this particular chapter of GTA (it was released late last October on the PSP), it is the debut of the game on a console--a very widespread one, at that.

Gamers anxious to return to Liberty City, the setting of Grand Theft Auto III, have long been wondering exactly when the game would come out (it was originally due in April but was then delayed) and how much it would be released for. The PS2 version was revealed in January and originally expected to hit stores in April, and Take-Two Interactive's CEO, Paul Eibeler, announced in March that the game would be cheaper than the $50 PSP version.

Though the game was already released for the PSP, it doesn't mean that this latest version doesn't have a chance to follow in its PS2 GTA predecessor's footsteps as a retail success. Though the PSP has shipped nearly 20 million units (as of the end of 2005, just over 15 million units shipped), the PS2 has sold more than 100 million units.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PlayStation 2 has not yet been rated, however, it's likely to receive the same M-for-Mature rating that its PSP counterpart had. As of press time, online retailers still listed the game at $29.99.

    I Think this will be The Best GTA ,,,, cuz I think The Liberty City is the BEST City in GTA Stories and i think this will be the best game in GTA cuz they've produced a new ideas in the Missions
    so ,,,, we're hope 2 fiind a gr8 Game ...

    Besides the freaky release date I forgot to
    say I really can't wait for it!! Can't afford a
    PSP right now. GTA3 is my favorite
    if I had to choose for some reason. Maybe
    because it was so revolutionary and new at
    the time? The atmosphere/characters about that one is
    so much fun. If it's a "rehash" of GTA3 I really
    don't mind at all!!

    Strange...GTA LCS on the PSP was a port of GTA III from the PS2, but with a revamped story and characters. And now, they're porting it BACK to PS2...Sony and their knack for porting things...::sigh::

    Well, this is good news for some, I suppose. I don't have the PSP version, nor will I even if its price drops. And add me to the list of people who will not be purchasing the PS2 port either.

    However, this should be a good business move for Rockstar. They stand to reap quite a bit of income for the PS2 version with minimal development effort. Sales of the PS2 version should help Rockstar acquire some capital to work on next gen titles, or pay their lawyer fees.

    cup left hand under right shoulder armpit,now move right hand in downward motion,next now smell lefthand,and repeat.i play gta every day,its called getting out of bed and going outside to your place of work,have never taken the same way yet,just like gta,,,get paid once a week you guessed it just like gta,,,get 2 choose what car 2 drive cuz i got like 5 cars 3old ,2 new,,,just like gta.i can also sleep in one of two houses,,,,just like gta,,,,

    Sad sad sad... All you posters who criticise this game... GTA LCS is an awesome game you can play on a PSP to go. However, it seems many of the posters do not know this but that was only HALF the fun. The multiplayer games were and are awesome. Multiplayer games like Capture the Limo, Tanks for the memories and many others... The fact there are ANY complaints against this just says you don't know how FUN the awesome multiplayer is very sad! Multiplayer Grand Theft Auto (8 people no joke)... What more could any GTA fan ask for?

    Silly, gimmicky release date. Low-budget price might actually save the game, but... seriously, who here really wants to get that game? You must have a very boring summer planed to get GTA LCS.

    Date aside, This is a great release, and a great price point. Now they just need to lower it to $20 for the psp. Whoever said no pictures or anything... look on the psp all they have to do is convert the controls and make the discs. There's all the media you need.

    Too bad this game is majorly lame. Just a bad re-hash of GTA III (same map, same characters, same cars) but not as fun.

    Rockstar is slipp'n slipp'n slipp'n but hopefully they'll rebound w/ the next-gen stuff

    I think they did the 666 release date on propose. It is in the bible. Its suppose to be a evil #. I guess it will give the bible beaters or OVERLY FAITHFUL something else to yell abouit when it comes to GTA.

    yeah its a weird and creepy date- 6/6/06= 666- the devil's number and anniversay for D-Day Normandy. i'm going to play MOH: Frontline on the Normandy level and watch Saving Private Ryan. Hey, at least it costs $20. Definitely I"m getting that one.
