E3 06: LucasArts working on Darth Vader game?

New York Times article hints at a future Star Wars project dealing with the backstory of the series' premier villain.

Now that George Lucas has completed his second Star Wars trilogy, everybody knows how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. But there are still a couple of decades' worth of untold stories between the close of Episode III and the opening of A New Hope. It appears LucasArts is looking to tap into some of that with an upcoming Star Wars game, according to a profile of the developer on the New York Times Web site Web site (registration required).

"Their [LucasArts president Jim Ward and VP of product development Jim Hirschmann] excitement was palpable on a recent afternoon," the article reads, "when Mr. Ward, Mr. Hirschmann, and Haden Blackman, the project leader of a forthcoming Star Wars game, reviewed all of the company's recent projects. Mr. Blackman outlined a new storyline that delved deeper into Darth Vader's history."

The article then says Hirschmann gave an enthusiastic demo of the game, "shouting and jumping each time a storm trooper tumbled onscreen, the character barely catching his fingers on the pixel ledge."

While the movie series wrapped up with 2005's Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, it's clear that LucasArts has no intention of letting the license depart the gaming scene anytime soon. Three of the top 10 best-selling games in the US last year carried the Star Wars logo, although one of them, Lego Star Wars, was actually published by Eidos. Currently the only announced Star Wars game in development at LucasArts is Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy.

    This is one of the few PS3 games I really want. This game looks like it could be one of the best star wars games ever. SICK!!!!!!!!!

    This sounds really exciting! the only thing is that I hope that they just don`t put it on xbox360 so the other people who don`t have xbox360s can play it.

    i read somewhere that both the live action and cartoon star wars shows were cancelled. I hope not, but does anyone have proof they're still in the works?

    If this Darth Vader game has you wielding lightsaber and force powers, the storyline and gameplay and graphics are good (TPS or FPS-I don't mind), you play the majority and the man in black and it's out on PS3, I am SOOO getting it. If it has all of the above except on PS2, I woill very liekly get it. This should be so good-I can't wait for more information.

    it will be nice if you will have an option to change SW history (several endings) like maneging to turn Luke to the dark side or not letting him cut your arm in the ending battle and then slicing palpatins arm before throwing him to the reactor (i was always curious to know what would have happend if vader wouldn't have died in the end of ROTJ)

    Actually the animated series is taking place during the Clone Wars. There's a live actino series that will take place between III and IV.

    But this game sounds like it could be awesome! Especially if they're using the new physics engine they're using for the next Indiana Jones game. Very next-gen type of stuff.

    Star Wars games have gone downhill. Other then the stragity game, star wars games are pretty dull. This one will have to pull of somthing super amazing to beale to compete with todays standads of both hardware and gameplay.

    darth vader just isnt cool anymore. i loved the man who deflected blaster bolts with his bare hands and killed the rebel terrorist scum.
    but now with anakin.....its just not the same..........

    Haden Blackman is the same guy that worked on Star Wars: Galaxies. He's also the same guy that openly badmouthed the SWG community because they were complaining about how broken the game was. (pre CU) So, he worked on a game so bad, it went through 2 major overhauls, and refused to listen to players who told them it was so bad it needed to be changed. (the CU came months after he departed the project) Why is he being allowed near this project?

    well i agree everyone would like to be darth vader and their might be stranded jedi in the galaxy that he and the storm troopers annilate plus we all want to know how yoda decided to go to that swamp planet mabye he and darth had a rumble mabye he and obi-wan had another fight.

    You could play as Vader in ROTS, but that game sucked. So hopefully they'll learn from that mistake.
