Ubisoft making Revolution action game

Game Informer reveals French publisher's project for the next-gen console, Red Steel--but is it an "incredibly violent" sword game, as rumored?

It's no secret Nintendo is going off the beaten path with its next-generation console, the Revolution. With its unconventional controller and lack of high-definition graphics, the device is not trying to imitate its competitors, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

However, some industry watchers have wondered if the platform will be so different that porting other next-gen titles to it won't be profitable. Others fear that that third-party publishers stung by losses on poor-selling GameCube titles will hold off supporting the platform until they're satisfied its userbase is big enough to warrant developing orginal titles for.

Some of those fears can now be eased, as it has been confirmed that Ubisoft is making a Revolution game. Today, the editors of Game Informer magazine leaked their May issue's cover shot--a stark image of a pistol and a katana sword with the Revolution controller reflected in its blade. The game is identified as "Red Steel," a new title from Ubisoft's Paris studio, with a development team including former members of the Prince of Persia, Far Cry Instincts, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell staffs.

Unsurprisingly, the Game Informer post doesn't go into any further detail about Red Steel, preferring to goad readers into buying the forthcoming issue. However, the revelation appears to confirm--or at least add weight to--a rumor that surfaced late last week in Europe.

The rumor first appeared on the Advanced Media Network's Revolution Advanced site. Citing anonymous sources within Nintendo of Europe, the site told of a game code-named "Katana" in development at Ubisoft. "This first-person game combines shooting elements with swordplay ones, according to sources," said the site. "What's more, it's incredibly violent and adult-themed."

Are "Katana" and Red Steel the same game? As neatly as the theory fits, it cannot be officially confirmed. As of press time, Nintendo had not responded to inquiries, and Ubisoft declined to comment on the game further.

I don't care if some people beleive the Rev is an idiotic idea. I think this preview shows that great things are coming for the system. Even though it doesn't change the gameplay the Subtlety of being able to tilt your hand and it moves like gangster style is pretty cool.

I don´t know. I hate FPS games. They make me dizzy and none of them ever made me feel really inside the game. If the big lauch title for Rev will be this FPS kind of thing then I´ll pass. I´ll wait until they release some cool action game like Prince of Persia, or a nice RPG. =)

I hate my friends, they are all like 'Nintendo sucks and that their ideas are non
profitable, revolution will never get off the ground', but i say...

At first I wasn't so sure about the Revolution...but now...I can't see how I won't be getting the Rev! Time to start saving up money...

I'm still left with one question...if the controllers are motion sensitive, how is the next SSB gonna be played? Do we like, swing controllers at each other? Eh?

Now all I'm rooting for is that they'll redo Oblivion for the Revolution. Sure, they'd have to scale it down a lot to work on the Rev's specs, but that game would be bomb to play with the Rev's controller (= Imagine swinging a sword in oblivion with the Rev-controller, match made in heaven (=

    Posted Apr 18, 2006 2:00 am PT

Ahhh, nintendo, the do go their own way but they do know what the gamers want. I can't wait to play Red Steel, Metroid Prime 3, Mario 128 and the next Zelda on the Revolution ... it's just too cool (=

    Vive la revolution!

wow, from what i've heard about red steel, it is going to kick ass. i hope everything works out so we can get the game and play it, i hope the revolution keeps getting third party support. becuz the way i see it, the controlller will change the gaming industry if third party companies have the right ideas. And because of red steel i know that the rev. is capable of having hardcore games. this is the revolution!

    Everyone ignore Swamptick.

And to those of you who think you will look stupid playing this game or will get tired---please...Using the Revolution controller is a lot more subtle than you think; you're mostly using your wrist as movement rather than your whole arm to, say, slash a sword. So enough with the rationalizations.

Yeah, it's good to see that Nintendo is starting to accept the fact that gamers are older.

Also, this concept of a sword could be absolute brilliance, this is the industry's first baby-step toward fully controllable movements.

why do people keep complaining about looking stuppid while doing it, are you going to walk outside and pretend to attack the mailman with your revolution controller? and even if you did remember the fighting game in the arcades where you actually had to punch and kick, and what about the cop game or boxing game? simulated motion has been around for awhile, if doing it in your room embarrasses you then maybe you should close the door?
