Lara Croft earns Guinness World Record

Tomb Raider star named most successful human video game heroine.

Lara Croft has today been awarded a Guinness World Record that recognises her as the "most successful human video game heroine." The Tomb Raider star won the prize for "transcending the boundaries of video games and becoming a recognisable figure in mainstream society".

Other human video game heroines considered for the newly contrived award included Street Fighter's Chun Li, Donkey Kong's Pauline, Dragon's Lair's Daphne, and Resident Evil starlets Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield. A nonhuman version of the same award has been claimed by Ms. Pac-Man.

"It is a mark of the phenomenal success of the Tomb Raider series that 10 years after the first game release, Lara Croft is more popular now than ever," commented Eidos' Ian Livingstone. The award rather conveniently ties in with the release of Tomb Raider: Legend, which arrives in European stores today and is scheduled for release in North America next week.

Rumours that Mario is soon to be named the "most successful human male video game plumber" have been neither confirmed nor denied by Guinness World Records at this time.

    What about Princess Toadstool? For a WORLD record they seem to be ignoring other countries. Lara did fine and dandy in the US but I think Princess Toadstool or Chun Li is more recognized around the world even without the help of a movie.

    DryvBy27 said on the first page that Duke Nukem or Mario should've won the award. Thanks a lot, now I have a disturbing, unpleasant image of Mario with boobs wearing heels stuck in my head. Besides that, I think Samus deserves it more.

    Samus definitely deserves it more so than Lara because her games are better, plus she's not into superficial qualities that aren't important when your life's on the line. Specialized armored suits > short shorts and a tank top. It's just too bad a lot of people don't know Samus is female.

    I was just going to ask about Samus Aron but noticed its been asked, lol. I'm really excited about the new TR Legends game, I've always loved the concept of the TR series, but teh execution has always been stiff, and rigid, and I've hated the control. Hopefully that's all been fixed. She looks a lot better, but in truth, especially after Resident Evil 4 I think there's still room for added realisim in her character model.

    It's probably based on statistics, including movie sales and whatnot. This isn't about who the best character is. RECOGNIZABLE FIGURE IN MAINSTREAM SOCIETY. Her movies helped greatly, especially with Angelina Jolie playing her.

    I really think that Samus or Chun Li should have taken that Honor.They are like Mario,Everyone knows who they are.I think what fueled this decision was the fact the Lara had two fairly decent movies.

    I think Lara Croft's a brunette, Blazer, but what do I know? Both hair colors look the same to me.

    Congratulations for Croft (though Chun-Li will always be in my heart as a favorite) and I hope Tomb Raider: Legend doesn't suck balls in a non-consensual way. Lara needs some gaming substance to support that world record.
