SiN Episode 1 headed to retail

Ritual Entertainment to release retail version of Emergence in stores on May 9.

Episodic content is a trend on the rise, and one of the first big experiments in the field is set to arrive next month. Ritual Entertainment and Valve today announced that the PC first-person shooter SiN Episode 1: Emergence will arrive in retail outlets on May 9. Electronic Arts has signed on to publish the game in Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Reprising a role from Ritual's original SiN, a first-person shooter released in 1998, gamers will control John Blade, a determined cop looking to undermine the machinations of corporate ne'er-do-well Alexis Sinclair. Along the way, the game's dynamic difficulty system will take into account how well the player is performing and adapt the challenge accordingly.

Emergence will also be distributed digitally over Valve's Steam service (with downloaded copies being unlocked on May 9). The game will be $19.95 in both boxed and downloaded forms, but gamers who preorder through Steam will get a 10 percent discount, as well as SiN, Ritual's original first-person shooter from 1998.

Have you ever noticed that if the game costs just 20$ and is only about 8 hours of game play, then the companies will make alot more money...

Can I wait for a collectable box set with all the episodes? I'm not fond of this one small piece at a time approach to publishing.

20 dollars can't beat that.I think I will go and pick that up.

Most games are in the 50 to 60 range 20 is not bad at all.Even if it is a bad game not a bad price.

eh I don't have a credit card, think I would be able to pre-load it on steam and then just get the retail version and use the keycode? Just so I can get the original SiN.

The original SiN used the Quake 2 engine. HL1 used a modified Q2 engine.

  • NnyCW

    Posted Apr 5, 2006 8:39 pm PT

    Already pre-loaded it.
I didn't have the original SiN game so even if the SiN: Emergence episode somehow was less than I thought It'd be, I'd still have the original.
And it's only $20, come on now people, that's a good deal.

well personally I never played sin on pc because at the time it came out the requirements were high but now I could but just wouldn't bother but episodes does look to be very good and concidering its only 20 bucks it really sounds like a good deal even though its just an episode.

The engine that powers half life 2 really blew me away and since episodes is using that same engine it probally would look very pretty I just hope the A.I would concider to be a challenge and also the game is some what fun and is not just a graphical showcase.

    Posted Apr 5, 2006 8:23 pm PT

Hey, now I might actually play the game... well, depending on whether or not you need to authenticate it on Steam. I really have no interest in being bound by Steam's terms.

Who exactly decided "Episodic Content is on the rise"? There's so little of it, and that which is released in it isn't spectacularly popular.

  • Jason____

    Posted Apr 5, 2006 6:51 pm PT

I thought they were going to release it online-only, and then make a boxed version once they had two or three episodes...

I love the source engine because its so versitile, its sweet physics, AND it can run smoothly on a wide variety of machines while looking good; my system plays the highest end source engin things (like the HDR demo), but looks like junk when i play bf2 or FEAR. Developers are making games with good graphics to fast for the consumer to catch up. I expected the source engine to have a long life and a lot of games, but with the rapid change to the NEXT generation, it may be left in the dust. The source engine has become the middle ground for last generation and this generation.

What the hell are you talking about- "Old Half-Life 2 engine"? The HL2 engine is one of the newest, and one of the engines that's leading the next-generation of games. It's not old by any means.

this game looks phenomenal! As far as I'm concerned, having the "half life 2" engine incorporated makes this game look very impressive. I'm glad developers aren't going into complete graphical overkill like in F.E.A.R. Don't get me wrong, great gameplay but heavy on the video card. Knowing SiN will run smoothly on my computer (like Half Life 2) makes me breathe a heavy sigh of relief.

Am I the only one that thinks digital distrobution should lead to noticable lower pricing, without pre-ordering. I mean if I can but it at retail for the same price the same day why not do that. That way I have the disk, manuals, box art etc.

I mean if digital distrobution just means We (the content creators) will be making more money by bypassing retail count me out. I talked to some of the Sin guys at GDC about keeping the attention of players between episodes. I'll let you know a lot of it depends on the community, or finding value in being able to beta test the next episode. So this gets a great big, MEH from me.

Half-Life 2: Episode One is the first "episodic content", as long as it does come out this month, and beat SiN to the market. I can't wait for either game. $40 (hopefully) well spent!

Episodic content is a trend on the rise? I don't know of any other games that were episodic. Isn't this the first? (Expansion packs don't count. Those are full games with no promise of expansion.)

The auto-adjusting AI system looks insaaane. Physics look awesome. Great characters, great voices too. I can't wait. And to the fellow who said (paraphrased): "Oh noes, it uses the "old" Half-Life 2 engine!" c'mon man, HL 2 still looks quite pretty with all the candy turned up. And it'll actually run smoothly on your machine.

Episodic content require lower prices, but the Steam distribution is just another channel to exact downloading fees instead of stocking fees.
