Bob Ross painting DS, PC, Revolution

The late painter and television personality will be resurrected on Nintendo's handheld and next-gen console later this year.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, painter Bob Ross became an unlikely cult celebrity. His friendly demeanor and incessant cheeriness endeared him to daytime viewers of his public television show, The Joy of Painting. His afro haircut and eccentric sayings--including the legendary "happy little trees"--also made him popular among college students, who would catch his program during late-night reairings.

Ross died of lymphoma in 1995, but his legacy lives on in the form of the business he left behind, Bob Ross Incorporated. Though painting supplies and kits are its mainstay, the company is diversifying--into games, no less.

Over the weekend, word began to circulate that a Bob Ross game was in the works for the DS. While initially blown off as an April Fool's joke, the announcement turned out to be true. An official announcement promises that the game is coming to not only the Nintendo DS, but the PC and the Revolution as well. The game is being developed by AGFRAG Entertainment Group, a small company focused primarily on flash games for the PC.

"I grew up watching Bob Ross on PBS and was always in awe of how quickly and smoothly he made these beautiful paintings, which helped inspire my creativity," said AGFRAG Director of Development Joseph Hatcher in a statement. "There are generations that know Bob Ross and his painting techniques, and I want to share his talent with future generations in a new medium."

No release date or gameplay details for the Bob Ross painting game had been announced as of press time.

When I watched to Bob Ross' TV shows, I got really amazed by his talent and the fact that he made the beatiful art of painting seem affordable and quite satisfying. Now, I can barely imagine how and interactive software (I mean, a game) will boost our ability to express ourselves via paint and brushes!!!! I just can't wait to put my clutches on this one!!!!

(**Fingers Crossed**) I hope Bob Ross gets some voice over love in this game. If so, this will be on my "must have" list. Deluxe Paint meets soothing guy with an afro that paints quick as wild fire? (***tears***) If any man can teach me how to paint fast as lighting, its Bob Ross.

    Posted Apr 4, 2006 9:35 am GMT

I've never had the desire to paint, nor have I ever seen his show, but despite that, such a concept is interesting to me.

oh no! This should be online! why isnt there a ps3/360 version! *sarcasm*

  • Corvin

    Posted Apr 4, 2006 9:13 am GMT

    How interesting.
I remember catching that show every now and again on public television. It was incredible how the man could seemingly randomly swipe the brush a few times and blammo; log cabin, boom; forests and a lake. And of course a few happy little trees, or a happy little bush...

Maybe this will be an educational tool/game for teaching landscape drawing, or maybe drawing in general. Drawing can be incredibly therapeutic once you learn the fundamentals.

I personally think this game is gonna be tight!!! Bob Ross was great, and a touch pad game for the DS would be helly cool.

  • Phazevariance

    Posted Apr 4, 2006 8:57 am GMT

Well, if it teaches paining techniques then it's probably more of a learning tool than a game...

I knew one person that owned Mario Paint for the SNES back in the day, and I'll tell you that even if it didn't do very well, I gotta thank Nntendo for even putting cool stuff like that on the market. If you're not interrested in drawing/painting or animation, you probably would think this this is quite pointless. If you are an artist, expect something like Painter, but with more fun interactivity and games...or, maybe they'll just screw this one up entirely, which they siomply cannot afford to do if they are relying heavily on the Revution to work.

This would be the most awesome game ever if it was like Dynasty Warriors. Bob Ross...paint palette in one hand, katana in the other, totally owning hordes and hordes of unwitting ninjas.

Bob Ross and video games? Add cheeseballs and porn and I think the stoners will buy it. PBS on video games? What's next? Master Piece Theater?
