April Fool's: Analyst: Revolution will take lead in 2010

Surprise prediction from analyst Thomas Runte touts Nintendo's console as winner of next-gen war by next decade.

APRIL 1--In the world of underdogs, few are getting as little respect as Nintendo's upcoming console, code-named Revolution. An overwhelming majority of industry analysts have stated that the favorite to win the next-gen console battle will be the PlayStation 3, with the remaining experts saying that Microsoft's Xbox 360 will take advantage of its head start to market, making it tough to beat.

However, Thomas Runte, a self-proclaimed analyst who frequents message boards under the handle "Miyamoto_Mojo," thinks differently.

"We expect Nintendo's Revolution, based on its price and immense catalog of downloadable games, to be the market leader by 2010," Runte told GameSpot News. "Nintendo is going to be one heck of a competitor for the gaming pie, and from the looks of it, I think they are going to get a rather huge slice."

Runte sees the ongoing concern over prices of consoles and games as the major factor in his analysis. The Revolution is almost guaranteed to be the cheapest console when its hits the market, with some projections going as low as $199 for the system.

"Sony and Microsoft will have game development costs much higher than that of the Revolution. The higher costs to develop for [the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360] will be passed on to consumers. This isn't the case with Nintendo's Revolution," said Runte. "I wouldn't be surprised if its games, first- and third-party, were $39, or even cheaper. If you had the choice to pay $40 or $60 for a game, which would you choose? Nintendo is rocking the game industry. They've got the right idea. Soon their superior strategy will pull them ahead."

Innovation is also a key selling point for the console says Runte. The console's controller, which is shaped like a TV remote, uses motion sensors to effectively simulate swinging a sword, casting a fishing line, or shooting a gun.

"I've heard about the controller and some of the projects that Nintendo is working on. It's really very impressive and should tap heavily into the non-gaming market. The possibilities [with the controller] are almost limitless, and I heard from a source that there are already early builds of the Revolution's handwriting-recognition technology. Gamers will eventually use the controller to 'write' answers, allowing Nintendo to bring its popular Brain Training games to the Rev. That'll definitely move systems in Japan. [Nintendo president Satoru] Iwata is a genius--pure and simple."

Runte also thinks that timing favors Nintendo. The Revolution will be able to play games from Nintendo's older consoles, the Sega Genesis, and Hudson's TurboGrafx-16.

"Remember, today's gamers grew up playing Mario Bros. and Zelda, some of the best games of all time. They're out there now as the industry's main consumers. The ability to play thousands of games, all priced in the five-dollar range, without leaving the house is very attractive. Gamers don't want to buy a PS3. They prefer a good system with nostalgia over a system with prettier graphics. Games are meant to be one thing--fun."

Runte says it's not only that Nintendo has "superior strategy" and is "totally awesome"; it's Nintendo's rivals' weaknesses that give the Revolution the advantage. He dismisses the competition as a non-factor and had particularly harsh words for Sony.

"Sony has yet to come out of the pit stop after the first lap. Folks, when this race started, naysayers said Nintendo would not have enough under the engine to compete with Microsoft and Sony. Trying to one-up Nintendo like they did with them wanting to make a Revolution-style controller after it was revealed and oohed and aahed over... Sony won't let anyone else have time in the light. Down with Sony. I am going to take a bat to my PS2. Nintendo is back in a big way. I think Nintendo will own them all. I believe they are on the path to domination once again. I think they finally are giving people what they want and continuing to give them things they never thought of."

Runte wasn't done touting Nintendo's future after the phone conversation with GameSpot News. In a follow-up e-mail, he wrote, "OMG!!! Zelda on teh DS roolz!!!11!1!!1!1 Chrono Trigger downloadable? :) Nintendo >>>>> M$ and Sony. They don't stand a chance! W00t!"

One pro-Sony analyst, who wished only to be known as "Devil_Dante420," responded to Runte's comments. He told GameSpot News, "Whatever. Runte is such a noob. The PS3's graphics are far superior to the Revolution games. Gamers are getting older, they want a machine that caters to an older, mature audience. Zelda is like totally lame. Final Fantasy, now that's a series that can carry a console."

Steve "4Runner" Downes, another self-proclaimed "analyst," is still sticking with his original projection that the Xbox 360 will dominate the next generation. "The Xbox 360 is just better than the lame PS3 and Revolution. I don't care that they're not even out yet, the 360 is just better. Just watch noobz, the world will stop when Halo 3 is released. [Sony and Nintendo] should just give up now."

this better be a joke..cause that controller is going to kill the Rev. they may have old games..but the gamers of this gen who grew up playing mario..are and have been sick of mario for the past 15 years and have always wanted highend graphics...why do you think the cube failed..smart guy!!!...this analyist is full of it... now as for Japan..yea i could see nintendo as king because of its price..but not here in the states...especially since next gen is going to drive down costs of current gen games..so people will probably buy more ps2, Xbox, stuff..cuase now its really cheep...

Its ironic how perhaps this is gamespots true opinion unbiased by all the hype out there about the revolution this and revolution that. Because sarcastically speaking nintendo revolution has a very fat chance of being number one 5 years from now.

    WOOT HOMIES WOOT!!!!

whats sad is that some nintendo fanboys are actually believing this article is accurateand not just a joke....haha, imagine being ok with intendo "owning" the gaming scene 5 years from now lol.

YO HOMIES, WELCOME TO MA CANDY SHAWP, ILL MAKE YOU LIKC MAAA......oh ok screw this.

Nintendo will crush all in its path, and thats their strategy, i should know i work for nintendo, and with what i hear nintendo are putting into their console, graphics and cpu-wise, it will be un-stopable, its gonna be thrice the power of the ps3 and has a heck of a release line-up. thats all i'm gonna reveal so don't come asking me any questions!!!

    HAH!!!! APRIL FOOL-

For one, in my opinion Nintendo made 2 good systems-the NES and N64. Thatz it! The Gamecube really sux-sure it haz better graphics than the PS2, however the game developers don't take advantage of the power and the software iznt that great either. In my opinion Nintendo will come in last place-1st PS3, 2nd 360 and last is the Revolution. I think that the revolution won't do that good because it's competition will blow it out of the race. For example, a lot of people are gonna be buying the PS3 for different things as shown below.
    1- hooks up with Linux
    2- Blu-Ray
    3-awesome graphics
    4-games (the best software)
    5-music and other downloads

The Revolution in comparison can't compare! Even though the PS3 will be expensive it's capabilities are far more than the other 2 systems therefore it will outperform and outsell.

IF ever there was a reason to ignore comments in the comment box on GS news, this would be it. I'm amazed some people (children under 13) took this so seriousely, without realising what day it is. Amazed.

I find it funny how a lot of people think the joke is "Revolution will take lead in 2010". That is not the joke at all and it is obvious you didn't read the actual article. The joke is on fanboys in general. Don't believe me? Then just read the last two paragraphs.

while i may not be a fanboy, WTF is wrong with you people? WTH do you REALLY know about the revolution, the PS3 hasnt even been touched yet, the 360s launch was not" the greatest launch in the history of video games" and really SO WHAT IF THE REVOLUTION HAS THE POWER OF AN XBOX, for all we know it might not even "project" games as we do now, and the specs may work tailored to what nintendo has created, but what really ticks me off is the people that assume just because the cube was a flop, the revo will follow suite. Nintendo just doesnt see the same vision that Sony and Microsoft do, which is, Selling products, nintendo doesnt really care, they want people to enjoy their products. while also reshaping the industry as they have for the past decades, what has microsoft done? really, bought out a company so they could have one of the greatest FPS of all time, on their system that looked doomed from the start? im not going to insult sony, because they belive in innovation . EyeToy, MASSIVE LIBRARY, also some of the things they are doing with the PS3 and PSP look spectacular.

all im saying is, wait till E3 before you start throwing rocks, because you never know what'll get thrown back

April fools... Hey how many fanboys are here? Thomas Runte is more than a Nintendo fanboy, gosh no Sony or MS fanboy could go that far this guy is really a n00b. There is no logic in his words (OK maybe a bit in the downloadable part of Rev), He's just saying everything is in Nintendo's favor and they way he sees the future, There is no competition at all for Rev, WAKE UP. The next-gen war is a triangle and everyone has some positive and negative parts. Xbox 360 has Live, a head start, Halo and Oblivion, PS3 has a large liberary and fanbase (Graphically nothing is certain untill E3), MGS and God of War and Rev has its innovation and price + Zelda and Metriod Prime (Sorry Mario is no major game for me).

  • Donkeljohn

Excellent article. Too bad this was posted on April 1st, because the competitive advantages espoused are the most enticing for any next-gen console.

These analysts are total fanboys. They can't even pretend to talk profesional. It seems that their particular likeness towards a company gets in the way of a real analysis.

However that does not change the fact that Nintedo will lead by the end of the race. I'm surprise people don't see this. The Revolution will in fact be a revolution.

I own a 360, and I can tell that, MS did not provide a console yet to lead a next gen war. Sony has the chance of study their competition 1 year before releasing their product... and thus perfect it.

The huge numbers of developers that support Sony, will make sure that PS3 will get popular.

But while Sony and Ms are killing themselves into getting a market lead, losing money undermining each other, Nintendo looks more and more apealing to consumers.

The huge success of DS is waking up a lot of people that Nintendo is infact capable of inovating thorugh fun games. It reasures confused customers who don't know which consolole to chose (360 or PS3), that Nintedo is a safe choise.

All this with, paired with a very cheap price point, and a huge library of games available from day one, might just make Nintedo a winner in this race.

Fanboys can make their claims. We'll watch and see.
