Obsidian, Sega making next-gen RPG

Black Isle castaways team up with Sonic factory for all-original PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 title.

After working on sequels to other studios' hits for the last two years, Obsidian Entertainment is getting the chance to work on an original role-playing game. Sega today announced that it will "collaboratively develop" a new RPG with the developer for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Sega is touting the deal as the company's latest effort to bring high-quality titles from Western developers to the world. Previously, the publisher has produced Condemned: Criminal Origins, Full Auto, and parts of the Total War series in conjunction with Monolith Productions, Pseudo Interactive, and The Creative Assembly, respectively.

The idea of a new intellectual property appealed to Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart, who founded Obsidian upon his departure from Interplay's now-shuttered internal shop, Black Isle Studios in 2003. While there, he worked on the famous Fallout, Baldur's Gate, and Icewind Dale RPG series. Since its inception, Obsidian has only worked on a pair of sequels to BioWare hits--Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2.

"We are excited to be working with a great publisher like Sega, as they are willing and excited to launch new and visionary IP on next generation consoles," said Urquhart. "At Obsidian, our focus is to make exceptional games, and we see Sega as a true partner in achieving that goal for our next epic RPG."

Sega did not announce a release date for the project, nor did it divulge any gameplay, genre, or story details.

I'm kinda confused here... is Osidian / Sega making 2 rpg's, one being based on Alien and another one yet to be titled or are these the same game? Well I always tought they were the same game, but I was just now browsing over wikipedia and check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsidian_Entertainment
It basically says that there are 2 projects in development with different names, one named "Georgia" and another one named "Connecticut"...

My question is this, is Obsidian working on two RPGs at once, or did gamespot just mess up by listing "Unamed Alien RPG" and "Untitled Obsidian/Sega RPG"?

I think they're actually the same game listed twice, but I would like to see Obsidian do something completely original since so far I like all their games.

I'm sure the game will be great on all the systems. Stop with the "ownage" crap already. Go to college and get yourself a good job and get all the systems if you're a true gamer.

This will be great game.. I have alot of respect for Obsidian in KOTOR 2.. They got way too much flak from people when it did very good (but of course not as good as the first), speciailly when they released it in under a YEAR of dev.. It had to be some kind of a record to release a game ported on two systems with that amout of depth in under a year.

When I heard SEGA, Obsidian, and RPG, my first thought was the next Phantasy Star. I miss that game so much. well the first and 2nd ones... I never really played the sequels.

I personally thought KOTOR 2 was a lot better than the first, so I'm looking forward to an original game from Obsidian.

Wiith the level of talent at Obsidian, I have no doubt in my mind that they could pull off a top notch RPG. KOTOR II was just a case of rushed development, none of the fault should lay with Obsidian. If Lucasarts gave Obsidian anywhere near the amount of time Bioware got with the original, I could've seen it surpassing the original by leaps and bounds.

Obsidian is bound for a breakout, and it seems they can stop riding Bioware's coat tails finally with an original property

pc nxt gen games will be $10 cheaper, but the trade off is higher hardware prices wich im willing to live with. anyways glad more rpgs are coming out, im all for online fps games, but i need something different from time to time, and for now oblivion on my xb360 is filling that void. single player games i think are better off on consoles sometimes, since they give u the better gfx rite off the bat, and since im not getting my pciE system till summer

eh, shouldn't you guys be saying "i can't wait to see what Obsidian can do??" (as far as brand new IPs), seeing as they're doing the actual dev work...(and yes i'm aware that Obsidian is practically BIS reborn, even went and sucked up some of Troika's talent after they closed shop; but hey...BIS is BIS, Obsidian is Obsidian...they're not completely identical)

What can I say? This sounds like one to look forward too. Were talking Sega here which have created Phatasy Star and PSO series working with the people that have brought us the classic PC Baldur's Gate series and Fallout. Being a RPG nut this one already has me drooling. This one could be big. Can't wait to hear and see more on this.
