GDC 06: Loco Roco confirmed for global release

Sony's cute ball-rolling game set to roll around the world this summer on Sony's handheld; more details expected soon.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--As part of Phil Harrison's keynote address at the 2006 Game Devleopers Conference, Sony has confirmed that Loco Roco, the 2D ball-rolling game that some have likened to a 2D take on Katamari Damacy, will be coming to the US and Europe as part of the game's worldwide release this summer.

The game was first shown to the public at the Tokyo Game Show 2005 last September. Loco Roco revolves around what can only be described as an orange blob with a voracious appetite. Using the handheld's triggers, gamers tilt the screen back and forth in order to progress through levels.

You know what? Who cares if it's even remotely like Katamari? Katamari Damacy was one of the first semi-creative (actually, it was pretty creative...the authors must've been doing acid or some other hallucingenic) games to come out of the industry in a long time. I'd LOVE to see something else in the same vein, but with a twist. Fortunately, Loco Roco seems to be grinding its own path, with a likeness to Super Monkey Ball, Mercury, and/or the old tilting Labyrinth board games. If making the orange ball made it grow or gave it different abilities, that'd make it even more like KD, but cooler IMO. I'm all for the industry going ballistic with creativity, rather than pumping out the sequel-icious drivel that's been paid for time and again for the past 10 years. GO BUY STUFF LIKE PSYCHONAUTS!!!! Support the little guys!!! (yes, I know SCEI isn't the "little guys" I was talking about, but the developer is most likely taking a chance for the in-house group that Sony drives.)

it seems to be a little more akin to super monkey ball. Only the ball is super hungry instead.

This is good news. This game looks like fun and it is somethign different from a lot of the me too games that dominate today. One last point Loco Roco is certainly not a Katamari ripoff, I don't even begin to know where you got that impression. Loco Roco has much more in common with a game like Mercury than with KD.
